View Full Version : my dealer will have my car for a week
eclps0 09-25-2003, 11:53 PM My dealer service department gave me to options The first option is they have to replace my evap unit. They also told me they have to take the rear apart (wheels, axle, differential, and other components they said I wont have my car for at least a week. Second option wait for the ECU upgrade and hope it fixes the engine light. So what do u think I should do wait for The upgrade which will take a month or so. or not to have a car for 1 week while it gets fixed.
mikeb 09-26-2003, 01:26 AM I wouldnt wait
give them the car IMO
BillK 09-26-2003, 08:23 AM If it's a warranty repair the loaner car program included in the RX-8 warranty should provide you with another car.
eclps0 09-26-2003, 09:38 AM but im only 19 i dont think they will give me a loaner car. in Fl
revhappy 09-26-2003, 10:46 AM You got the worst luck!
mikeb 09-26-2003, 01:58 PM Im 22 and I got a loaner when my cel light came on
It never hurts to try

what upgrade!? what did i miss?
mikeb 09-26-2003, 06:39 PM you didn't miss anything, he is just hoping one is coming like most of us
8_wannabe 09-26-2003, 07:46 PM I musta missed something. What's wrong with ur car? If it's that messed up and they're tearing it down, just return the darn car (do you have that option due to the reduced hp thing?) then get a new RX-8.
1. You'll get a brand new car with zero miles vice whatever miles you've got now.
2. Whatever problem you're currently suffering presumably your new car won't have.
3. Whatever the repair techs plan on doing to your car, keep in mind this will be the first time they've ever done it on an 8. You're a guinea pig! who know if it'll be right after they reassemble everyting, and in another week you forego your option for returning the car.
It's worth thinking about anyway. Good luck!
syntrix 09-26-2003, 11:20 PM Yeah, having them tear down the whole rear end sounds pretty excessive.
Once it's apart, it will probably never go back together properly again.
So what exactly is the problem? Did you get a CEL and throw a code?
If that's the case, demand the code(s) and post it up here asap.

syntrix 09-27-2003, 01:15 AM The verbage on the sticker does say LOANER.
It does not state RENTAL, where in some states or agencies, you have to be at least 21.
eclps0 09-27-2003, 01:40 PM they said my evap unit is flooded with gas. i never top off the car but once i let a gas guy do it and he topped it over 2 bucks. My dealer said the evap unit is behing a whole bunch copponets that they would have to take the rear apart.
8_wannabe 09-27-2003, 02:11 PM Ok, time to show off my infinite ignorance. What's an evap unit, how does it get flooded and what does it get flooded with? Sorry for the bonehead question...
syntrix 09-27-2003, 02:16 PM Ok, have you asked for the codes yet?
Could be as simple as a pinched hose, but it's hard to diagnose cars over the internet.
eclps0 09-27-2003, 03:29 PM im moving to Fl in 2 days for school. Im really gonna miss it in Nj my friends, faimily , Nyc, and everything else. i have appointment to take my car to gunter mazda in davie Fl. My mom and I are driving the 8 down 1300 miles.? u think a bottle of oil is enough or should i go bye more for the trip down. When i go to gunter i will post the cel codes.
daedelgt 09-27-2003, 04:54 PM You shouldn't need any oil.
mikeb 09-27-2003, 06:53 PM you may not need the oil but I would bring it and keep oil at gas station just in case
English 09-27-2003, 07:11 PM Don't come down!!!!! Stay far away from this place.....don't do it!!!! PLEASE reconsider!!!!;)

The fuel in the tank doesn't just sit there, and modern vehicles has a sealed tank/filler cap. Gasoline evaporates and expands in the heat, and the tank has tubes connected to the top of the tank that hold the gas vapor, and collected it in a charcoal canister that then releases the vapor into the engine- this way you don't have gas vapor leaving the car.
Because of the system, you are NEVER supposed to top off the tank on any modern vehicle (70's and newer). Fill until the handles kicks off, then place fuel hose back in the bracket, and place the fuel filler cap carefully back on.
and where do you find FULL SERVICE filling satations anymore?

Thanks, Realistic. I feel so smart now. I think I'll go back to designing my Space Elevator! :D
ggreen29 09-27-2003, 07:29 PM Yeah, having them tear down the whole rear end sounds pretty excessive. If getting to the evap units requires removing the fuel tank, then I think the rear end will have to come out. Someone had a pic of the rear suspension while the car was on a lift, and the fuel tank straddles the driveshaft tunnel like saddlebags. It can't be a pretty sight for a mechanic. My sympathies.

Some states do not allow self-service, so all filling stations are "full service" (meaning they pump the gas for you). Two that I know of are Oregon and New Jersey, there are probably others.
carnut 09-27-2003, 09:49 PM I agree with selling the car back if you can; this problem is not a good sign, but it may be completely fixable. Good luck!
RX-GR8 09-28-2003, 12:04 AM yes we in the garden state are subjected to full service.
ggreen29 09-29-2003, 10:27 AM I agree with selling the car back if you can; this problem is not a good sign, but it may be completely fixable. Good luck! If the damage is due to operator error, then that may be deducted from the buyback. However, it may still be worth it to have a car that's never been taken apart. On the other hand, is it too late to pin some responsibility on the service station for overfilling?
rx8power 11-01-2003, 09:49 AM I had the same stupid problem, I bet is some faulty valve, because I never top off my car and right now it's been in service for two weeks. The biggest problem is not replacing the part, as the matter of fact some dealers have it in stock, but because your charcoal canister got flooded with fuel it needs to be replace, and that my brother has to be ordered straight from JAPAN, that's about a week wait right there.
Good Luck
