View Full Version : Will the RX-8 make Car and Driver's next 10Best list?
newport8 09-25-2003, 07:34 PM I'm wondering if the RX-8 will make Car and Driver's next 10Best list come January. Anyone have any thoughts? If it does, that means it'll have to knock off a car currently on the list. Which one will that be. The RSX? The Mazda6?
donald121 09-25-2003, 07:44 PM What are the 10 best now?
mikeb 09-25-2003, 08:15 PM I would be surprised if it didn't make it
vipeRX7 09-25-2003, 08:16 PM the FD was on it every year it was sold in the US ... but then again, it was the FD :)
newport8 09-25-2003, 08:49 PM They are as follows:
Acura RSX
BMW 3-series/M3
Chevrolet Corvette
Ford Focus
Honda Accord
Infiniti G35
Mazda 6 s
Nissan 350Z
Porsche Boxster
Subaru Impreza WRX

If the RX-8 beat out the G35 coupe in Car and Driver's own comparo, then you might think that it would take it's place on the 10best list. Of course, I think the G35 also means the 4-dour sedan.
khoney 09-25-2003, 08:54 PM If it doesn't, I'll have to cancel my subscription, because it would indicate that they no longer know anything about cars.
Puppy1 09-25-2003, 09:03 PM Since the 8 has been consitently chosen OVER the G35 and the 350Z, I think there is a good chance it will bump one of them. Probably the Z.
klegg 09-25-2003, 09:25 PM DO not think it will bump the z, the car mags like to throw bones to car companies in trouble. I would think the focus.
maybe that s#@$ box, the wrx. But the sti and evo would also be in the running, no?
Elara 09-25-2003, 09:25 PM I hope it is, because I've got a bet with some of the guys in my office about it.
And because the car is amazing, but C&D can be kinda questionable in it's judgement sometimes. I don't always agree with them about a lot of the cars they drive.
350 Formula 09-25-2003, 11:42 PM Of those cars, you have to throw out the Focus!!
I mean, it is a FORD.
ZoomZoomH 09-26-2003, 12:10 AM i actually think the Z will get bumped off of Ten Best by the RX-8
my reasoning? Once you take out the legacy of the Z nameplate, the G35 immediately stands out as a better representation of the VQ engine w/ the FM RWD platform of the 2.
To me, the RX8 is one of the most significant new cars for quite a while, sure there's been some others....
Due to typically political crap, it's unlikely to be #1, but if it's not it the top ten, there must be some pretty amazing cars out there that I know nothing about!
The RX8 is a car anyone can drive, can seat four adults and has reasonable luggage space. It's stylish, sporting, performs well and has unique appeal because of the rotary donk (itself an award winner).
Plus, for the Z-heads, sure the RX8 compares to the Z and comes out a little slower on straight line perofrmance, but until the Z grows 2 more seats, it doesn't compare to the RX8 at all - it's in a diffreent class (two seater sports car!!!)

Don't know how many Ford parts or how much influence, though. Anyone have any inside information or informed insight?
P00Man 09-26-2003, 06:16 PM Yes, and will prob win car of the year, too
lets hope anyways

8_wannabe 09-26-2003, 06:31 PM The 3-series has gotta drop off the list. Quality has turned to crap, styling is so yesterday's news and it's overpriced compared to what you can get from Japanese brands. RX-8 will be in top three, prob #2. don't know what'll be #1 but I don't think they have the guts to put such an innovative car atop the list, esp when it doesn't easily fall into any clear-cut category (sports car, sedan, sports sedan, crossover, what is it!?)

I think the horsepower issue may effect it's chances, even though it shouldn't.
Gord96BRG 09-26-2003, 11:26 PM Uh, Car and Driver doesn't do #1, #2, etc - the 10 winners are always presented in alphabetical order, and there's no ranking within the top ten.
That useless, pathetic rag, Motor Trend, is the crap magazine that does the Car of the Year and Truck of the Year (gag). Whoever buys the biggest advertising contract wins car of the year, and they've picked some real winners over the years, like the bloated Chevrolet Caprice Classic!! (I'm being sarcastic - actually, getting MT's CotY is almost a kiss of death, a guarantee of becoming a market statistic).
Oh, yeah - I bet the RX-8 will make the 10 Best list. I suspect the Focus could drop off, but the G35, RSX, Accord, Boxster, and WRX could also be surprise drop-offs.
Regards,
Gordon

I ws thinking the same thing but could not find any of my back issues to confirm it was just a 10 best with no rankings 1-10.
As far as if the what car will drop of the list...
Acura RSX = Great car, I don't see it happening since it's still the best FWD sport compact out there.
BMW 3-series/M3 = Possible since it's been losing comparisons including one to a WRX and the M3 finally lost a comparo to the S4.
Chevrolet Corvette = Would shock me if it did, this car embodies the great american sportscar.
Ford Focus = Fills that econo category, but may drop off.
Honda Accord = No way in hell this is going anywhere, they improved it greatly.
Infiniti G35 = Seems this or the Z will drop since they are such similar cars.
Mazda 6 s = Still the best bang for the buck sedan out there.
Nissan 350Z = See G35
Porsche Boxster = I think this one is gone, there really isn't much special about this car anymore, and why the hell wasn't the S2K here in the first place.
Subaru Impreza WRX = It lost some of it's unique character with the addition of boring headlights, and the STi or Evo may take it's place on the list even though the WRX was picked most fun to drive 2 years running.
Just for kicks, my predictions...
WRX drops and is replaced by the Evo
350Z drops and is replaced by the RX-8
Boxster drops and is replaced by the FX45 or Touareg
G35 is listed as the coupe for this years 10 best
The SRT-4 may sneak onto the list though I doubt it, and maybe the Focus of BMW drops and the WRX stays. I think the only lock for staying on the list is the Accord.

I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way. Dropped my subscribtion to M/T 7 years ago, due to the lack of intellect, integrity, and the whoring for the insurance industry and the large corps.
