I've been getting some conflicting advice from different people about this. Basically some are saying you can negotiate a better deal with a factory order because it's just a paper-work push for the dealership, and they don't have to spend anything on storing it. I've also been told that dealerships would rather sell you a car thats on the lot to move existing inventory, and therefore would give a better discount.

Does anyone have any solid advice in this regard?

instead of asking the others, you should ask that question yourself.

If you're a vendor, say you're selling clothes ? You have a bunch of winter clothes, but its already Feb, do you want to get rid of them FAST so you can stock some Spring clothes ?

By *ordering* you're pretty much like trying to get clothes for Summer when you're in March, who the hell will give you any *decent* discounts ?

Every dealership would rather you buy from their lot than *ordering*.

dealer will always try to sell you their inventory on the lot first, because that's money they've already sunk in sitting on the lot, they'd rather get that money back (plus profit) first before ordering more.

simple economics really.

also, if you 'custom order' something (even though Mazda officially don't support such practices), dealer's perception would be 'hey this chump is definitely committed to buy this car, we don't need to give him as much of a price break, let's clean house muahahah'

My plan was to approach 3 dealerships with the package I want, and say the one who gets me the best price on it gets my business. My main problem is I really want a red manual GT w/ red/black interrior, but in the 6 months I've been keeping tabs on mazdausa.com, there hasn't been anything within a 150 mile radius of me (Rochester, NY)

One thing I want to let you know

the Search tool on mazda has a defect .... should I call that a defect at all?

It seems that, they will only search your local dealership within the next 2-3 zip codes.

For example, when I search for 11375. even if I put within 150 miles. only 3 dealership shows up and nothing else.

when I put 10013, which is one of the zip in the city, it will not show the ones I had (11375), but instead it will show some other dealership within the next 3 zip code, including some jersey dealerships.

So you should try diff zip codes. dont just put yours in and search within 150 miles or whatever, because that crap dont work.

I had a similar problem. My best advice to you is to do exactly what you said. (if there's a no haggle dealership nearby, you might have better luck going to them first and asking the others to beat it.)

Dealers have access to inventory at all USA dealers, so they WILL be able to find you something. The question is whether or not they will go out and pick one up for you. My local dealer was willing to go 260 miles for me.

If you really want a specific model typically the dealer will "transfer stock" in order to get it. Depends on how bad they want your business.

You can get rebates and special financing deals from the factory if you buy from stock, but if you special order a vehicle, you pretty much pay sticker cost.

Go shopping and tell them what you want. They will find it for you. You may have to travel a bit to go get it if it is farther than the dealer will go, but you would have a kick-ass drive home in your new car.
