View Full Version : The Running (no joggers) thread
tjbourgoyne 05-11-2007, 01:29 PM Been runnning for about 15 years now. I hit the weights as well, but nothing like running 2-4 miles with all you got and wanting to pass out at the finish line. I checked my resting heart rate at the Baltimore Museum of Science recently and it was 56, my gf was 70. Here's some great songs to put in your mp3 player to get the blood flowing:
Fun Lovin Criminals - scooby snack
Cake- going the distance
Harvey Danger - I'm not sick
Lenny Kravitz - Always on the run
Modest Mouse - Florida
Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Gold Lion
????? - Hey man nice shot
If you have some good tunes help me out...

If you wanna really run, there is nothing like Rage Against the Machine.
Bodies - Disturbed is a good one too.
I am running.... it just may look like I am jogging, HAHA
Steakboy42 05-11-2007, 01:33 PM actually, my gf's twin sister ran a half marathon last year. don't even like to run a half mile.

Raptor2k 05-11-2007, 01:34 PM I'd also like to know more good tracks for the gym. I hate it when something gloomy or soporific comes up on my ipod when I'm sprinting or trying to do my last rep :icon_no2:
Here is a another good one, I don't know why i like it, nostalgia I guess
Glory of Love - New Found Glory
I hate running, but goes with the job, Steakboy, ever try swimming? Good cardio too.

If you could see the scenery (ain't talking about trees) where I run it would change your mind. Just bring some mirror sunglasses:naughty:
Very true, Ala Moana in HI is a great place to run for the same reason.

I like swimming. I was on the swim team in HS for a season. I didn't like the competition aspect of it that much (and the suits) so I didn't come back the next season. Someone told me that you can't lose weight swimming though. Is that true?
-Steakboy
You can lose weight doing anything. Swimming is actually the perfect excercise to do if you could only pick one. Great cardio, core strength, balance and muscular endurance.
As for weight stuff, ever see a fat competitive swimmer? The amount of calories you burn just BEING in the water is huge! After a 4 hour dive, I can lose 2 quarts of water and 2000 calories.
I don't do speedos either, makes the ladies get too excited. Actually laughing... there so MEAN. But any pair of running shorts is not going to really slow you down in the water.
tjbourgoyne 05-11-2007, 01:48 PM Swimming is the best exercise. Not much abuse on the body and can wear you out pretty quick. You really need an olympic size pool to do it right and most people don't have access to something like that. I've been sore in odd places after doing some hardcore laps so it works out some odd muscles. You can loose weight but it would take much work and dedication.
If you have some good tunes help me out...
Got another good one, my brothers band, Strongarm and the Bullies
Got a good like barroom sound, like the Dropkick Murphys, good to run or lift to.
Ever try wind sprints too? Really gets your resting heart rate down and it will recover quicker after you run.
tjbourgoyne 05-11-2007, 02:25 PM Try doing sprints on a hill or levee. It will beat you down like a sledge hammer to a tent stake.
^^^ Yes!
Also soft sand is a winner, if you wanna win some f-ing pain.
mike0615 05-11-2007, 04:56 PM Bodies - Disturbed is a good one too.
yup, thats my jam when i run, also psycho, and the hives "out the way" the other crazy song they made, foo fighters i don't remember the name but it goes "done done, on to the next one" weezer hash pipe, i got a buch more but i can't name off top of my head. but u should get the picture from those few.
tjbourgoyne 05-11-2007, 06:02 PM few more that make me fly by the fat chicks
Deadboy and the Elephantmen - Misadventures of Dope, Stop I'm Already Dead
Silverchair - Tomorrow
User24 05-11-2007, 06:17 PM I don't like music on the go. Most people who use it have a hard time staying motivated or focused, because their mind wanders and they feel bored. Listening to music is what moms pushing baby strollers do around the park, or people on treadmills do because they are not challenging themselves enough. If they were running fast enough on a treadmill they would not feel like listening to music.
On trails and the quietness of the hills I don't think any of us would want to listen to music.
If Saturday morning you're not feeling that great, some coffee should be enough to make you feel like runnning. The caffeine as a mental stimulant, physical performance enhancer, and the coffee as a source of antioxidants. If it is later around 10 am or 11 am, even some music in addition to the coffee can help get your mood up.
Coming from the hifi realm, there are complications with portable music that would take too long to get into here so I just save money and leave it at home.
Favorite running shoes: Nike Air Max 360. Ever since like 4th grade, I've always wondered why they didn't make the entire sole air. Now I can finally live the dream.
Favorite hydration: Cytomax "Tropical Fruit", or if I'm not going so intense a little Gatorade "Fierce" powder mixed into my water bottle will do.
Favorite gel: any... If I wake up late and can't get a large enough breakfast, it'll do.
Favorite recovery supplement: Endurox R4 "Fruit Punch"
Favorite protein supplement: Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey "Extreme Milk Chocolate". It tastes good and it is cheap.
Favorite post-workout pain killer: Coffee, self-roasted.
Favorite stretch: 3 different ITB stretches, the most important stretch for me to avoid that ITB overuse injury
Favorite joint supplement: any MSM+Glucosamine+Chondritin
Favorite socks: SmartWool, by far!
Has anyone watched those Le Parkour videos on the internet? That's some crazy urban running combined with gymnastics, especially doing the Ninja Gaiden thing... 3 mid-air kicks off two perpendicular walls to reach the top, with broken legs if you mess it up and fall down below.
NVMYRX 05-12-2007, 02:33 PM I run marathons...2:18.23 is my PB
I don't even like to drive that far!!!!
NVMYRX 05-12-2007, 07:09 PM I don't even like to drive that far!!!!
you swim further :)
Rootski 05-12-2007, 08:12 PM There mountain-to-air ration of where I run is extremely high. That's why I listen to "Hearts on Fire" by John Cafferty. Rocky ran up a mountain to it, so can I.

Why is an olympic size pool necessary?
a 25 meter pool will work just fine, but a 50 meter one is better.
Just can't use a regular swimming pool, too short. Anyone seen that endless lap pool thing? That is what I want in my backyard some day.
Longest open ocean swim to date 10000 meters... that is a fuuur piece.
toxin440 05-13-2007, 12:11 AM it is jogging, or perhaps its "yogging" the "J" might be silent.
i need to do more cardio esp since i gave up smoking about a month ago -- ive been doing weights, but have been lazy the past week.
Jethro Tull 05-13-2007, 12:32 AM Been runnning for about 15 years now.
If you have some good tunes help me out...
I've been running for just about 30 years now- I'm 48. Up until a few years ago, I could pound-out 5-to-6 minute miles all day- but after 3 decades my knees are just about shot. I now am a jogger doing 8 minute miles at best, and more typically 8:30. But not by choice, dangit. :(
I hope your knees hold up!
I like (big surprise) anything by Jethro Tull that has a reasonably fast beat.
My brother and I started training for the Houston Marathon about 3 months ago. Dont run with any music at the moment because the runs arnt long enough and I have a hard of enough time to convince myself to keep going.
Ill probably listen to Rage, In Flames and Sonata Artica
LabDad 05-13-2007, 02:04 AM I'm trying to get back into it but I'm so damn outa shape now. I can't even do 1 mile at the same pace I did an entire marathon 20 years ago (personal best 3:29:10 which is 7:59/mile).
I am jealous of your running times... my best mile time is 6:15 per mile for a 3 miler.
I guess fat dudes were not meant to run... well old football players with bad knees are not anyway.
tjbourgoyne 05-13-2007, 09:40 PM Why is an olympic size pool necessary?
Because it is that's why!! Seriously, olympic pools are quite long and it's a good way to judge laps and time.
