Does anyone else think the stock taillights are disgusting? Are there any others on the market yet?

There's nothing wrong with the tail lights.

What's wrong,? Need a big light saying RX8?

Maybe someone could find some with red and orange lens, to match those orange side lens the US seems to get.

C'mon - the rear lights are beautiful and the lights at the front are a work of art.

why on earth you would want to switch out the taillights is beyond me. I have yet to see another car that has those little LED lights on the edge of the lights. They are so unique that I see it ridiculous to change them.

This ain't a Civic. No need to change them.

I'm just not a huge fan of the clear outer plastic, and then chrome underneath surrounding the actual lights.

Acutally, the stock lights look like lame ricer lights to begin with.

What happened to normal, no glitz lights? I just want something that doesn't scream flashy when the rest of the car isn't.

if you think the tailights are ugly..then you don't belong on his forum..!!the tail lights make the rear look real aggressive...i hope your not reffering to those gay altezza lights...if so, you need to get slapped!

stuff the negativity... this section is about modification, and peopel may do as they choose.

i like the sock units, s'pecially the turn indicators, but if someone else doesn't, fine.

as far as aftermarket tail lights, i dunno if there'll be good, quality units that don't look even more flashy and chromed than the sock units...

The only offense of the rear lights is being rather generic and Miata-ish, IMO.

The only thing on the back that I simply do not like is the dull black plastic. Heh, I really didn't even notice it when I bought the car, the rest was so alluring! But now it bugs me. The black plastic on the front and mirrors can be easily fixed, but I haven't seen a kit yet which banishes it from the back. The Mazdaspeed kit for example--I can barely tell it from the factory rear end.

If someone wants to make a good-selling body kit, concentrate on the rear. Ideally giving the rear of the car the same Italian flavor the front of the car has (esp. w/ the appearance package + rotary accent package). Keep it smooth and elegant, without adding a half dozen ugly scoops.

XDEEDUBBX summed it up best......

The tail lights are perfect, finally factory talis lights that don't need to be changed.

If you do change them, attach some photos :)

I haven't taken any of these apart, so I'm only guessing, but what if you took the stock light housing apart and covered the chrome part with...something? You don't want it flashy, so I'm guessing carbon fiber film is not your cup of tea...but maybe some of that black adhesive vinyl, or possibly just paint. It would definitely dim down the chrome look. Of course, even if you ultimately would prefer paint, I think I'd try it with something temporary first!

Look at this lights carefully, it's almost a piece of art. Not many production cars have a set of nice taillight like the 8. What ever you're looking for got to be really really outstanding to beat what the 8 have got.

I'm not a big fan of the taillights either. I think most ppl that feel that way have been long digusted by the overabundance of altezza (aka jdm is300) taillights on civics and such.

How the S2000 keeps it pretty subtle is something i like.

sorry if repost, but can't remember a previous post. has anyone thought about maybe tinting the tail lights...or something...they're a little to altezza-esque for my tastes. so now i sit here broken hearted, paid a dime and...oh i mean i'm sitting here thinking and i've come up with some options.

1 take the assembly apart and tint the plastic cover
2 take it apart and paint all those chrome parts black
2.5 paint those lil chrome parts body color =p (now that i visualize this it really looks tacky in my head)

i could settle tinting just the cover, but those 2 l'il led's on the sides i really like and they're not particularly bright.

anyhow just thinking out loud, wondered if anyone was in the same boat as me. let's go fishin'!

Sticking with OEM myself - I think they look great and roll very well with the rest of the car. Please post pics if you ever change them. Always interested in what others will do with their ride.

what don't you understand
some people like myself dont want our rx8 to look like everyone else's
By putting aftermarket items on our ride we create something different and unique

Mental, dear, haven't you already learned your lesson? Why can't you say something like "While those lights aren't for me, I respect your right to add them to your car if you so choose."
It's not up to YOU to decide what looks good on anyone else's car. Quit being nasty, or the last punishment is going to become permanent.

I've got friends who (obviously not big fans of the Altezzas) already think that the 8's rear lamps look similar to the Altezzas' style.

Personally, I like the rear lamp alot, don't think its similar to the Altezzas, but from a glance it might. Anyway, I think the 8's lamp itself is already unique and different from the other CARS. You can do any motification to make them look apart and different from another RX-8 BUT hopefully not end up looking like any other CAR on the road.

I don't like the stock tail lights. I probably would like them without the horizontal silverish plastic pieces that run across them.

Something like the supra tail lights would work for me.

IMO i think the stock lights look fine, but i could see where he's coming from. It looks too crazy and busy, and I would want to see how it would look with just normal lights in the back... I'm not sayin it would look better, but i would want to see how it would look like.

GoBerserk is actually not alone on this one...

The taillights were one of the few things gently panned by the BBC Top Gear review that was posted on this board a while back. If you haven't seen the Top Gear review, take the time to find it - it's terrific. The reviewer, Jeremy Clarkson, absolutely loved the RX-8, but repeatedly said the car was not exactly "the prettiest" he'd ever seen. According to Clarkson, the tail lights were "busier than a bishop's hat." This theme -- that the car is too busy in its styling -- has been repeated in several other reviews I've seen and read. In fact, among objective non-RX-8 owners, I'd say that this criticism is a majority view.

Honestly, I love the way the RX-8 looks, but certainly think there's room for improvement. I particularly like the things brother voodoo has done -- especially the debadging. IMHO, his hood is dramatically better by making such a simple (but not inexpensive :( ) change.

Since several people have commented on the taillights, and since I think there are at least several examples of people improving the look of the car, I'm looking forward to seeing what aftermarket lights will look like.

Absolutely DISGUSTING! a major BOOBOO in the rear light cluster section. I'm not happy with'em at all. I don't yet own one of these vehicles but already, I know what I'd like to change before I get one!

I think they look fine. It's funny because when I first got the car, one of the first things people would comment on was how "cool" they thought the taillights looked (probably because we would usually approach the car from the back when going out to give it a look).

I would love to see other options, but I don't think that's something I'd change on mine.

When moving the car last night, I actually saw it for the first time in the dark with the lights on. In the dark and lit up, it's not so bad. During the day, I'm not so impressed.
