Suggestions? For general shots to illustrate a point I'm making in a thread, I use 640x480. But I've seen folks use 1024x768 or larger (sometimes much larger) in some of the "show us your car" threads.

In fairness to folks who are still on dialup, I'd recommend keeping the size down unless you put a warning in the thread subject.

I actually made the mistake of posting to large and 640x480 fits nicely.

My pix are 640 x 480, but come out to 900kb. When I try to upload, it says they are too big and the upload doesn't complete. I don't have Photoshop; just whatever comes with windows. How can I make the filesize smaller for upload while still making pix look decent. Does jpg or gif format matter? Any other suggestions for reducing file size?

What you need is a web based program that allows you to "reduce" the amount of data. JPEG files typically have this ability. There is an algorithym written in them to allow you to compress the data.

It takes something with like a million pixels and thousands of colors and compresses it to 200 kilobytes and maybe 100's of colors; thus reducing the amount of data.

Photoshop and PhotoImpact along with other programs have this "compressable" feature when you store the file in "JPEG" format; allowing you to scale the size of data.

I especially like PhotoImpact for this; check it out. It's reasonably priced.

By "web based" do you mean there are programs I can use via the web? If so, what is their URL? Or are you talking about Photoshop and PhotoImpact, which I wouldn't really call web based.

...No, I'm saying that they are for building web pages.

you could also just crop out the crap to reduce the size of the image. just post the important part.
