it brings me a lot of pleasure to bring this picture up. 1 image is worth more than 1000 words. but add to the image, AWD around 400hp/400 torque.

Plus rotor-shaped side mirrors and look at the center dash trim through the window: Rotary accent. Wat up wid dat? How can you do this with a piston engine? (space and weight distro)

Here's an interesting story I'd like to share.

Back, before 1986, Mazda was developing their 2nd generation RX-7. About 6 months before its release Porsche released their 924 replacement, the 944.

At that time it was assumed by many, that Mazda had ripped off the style from Porsche, but infact it was the opposite. Porsche began developing the 944 months after Mazda did winter testing in Scandinavia.

Looks like Subaru is trying to capatilize in a similar way that Porsche did in 86.

This Subaru will never be as successful as the 8. They will never be able to drop their engine as low, or keep the body as small as the RX-8 and bring you 400hp. The car will be as big and ugly.

Nice try Subaru, but you lose.

FWIW, that is a concept car called the B11S. There's a bunch of information out there on the net about it but here is one link (including a pic of the *hideous* front): http://tinyurl.com/okr8
It runs a twin turbo flat six cylinder engine which is how they manage a lazy 294kW/400ps (note, not HP) [0]

Some stats on size from the link:

Length: 4785 mm

Width: 1935 mm

Height: 1370 mm

Wheelbase: 2800 mm

Front track: 1625 mm

Rear track: 1610 mm

Kerb weight: 1580 kg

so it's a bigger car than the 8 by a long way.

Methinks a designer jumped ship mid project or someone like the RX-Evolv a bit too much.

Going back even further for styling rip-off stories, have a look at the Triumph 2000/2500 and Rover P6. IIRC, Management squables let to a split in design control fairly early on, but there are a number of similarities.

[0] Way OT: Note also that similar power figures can be had from a single turbo 13b (though, admitedly there are probably more 300kW rotors per capita in Oz than in the US, simply because we also have a higher density of rotary workshops).

With a 300hp 13b I'd definately kill some joeys driving in Australia, they'd never think to look left then right before crossing the highway....lmao.

I think it looks pretty good at this angle. The front face is pretty bad though. Can't say a bad thing about a car with nicely sized wheels that fill out the wheel well. That would be cool that the majority of the new cars will have suicide doors. And then we can look back to this day and say the RX-8 was the catalyst for this new trend...

I guess Mazda have done it yet again!

With the MX-5, they have brought the attention of the world, to the open top 2 seater roadster.

And now with the free-style door, they gonna create yet another storm!

Ok, so now we have two Rx-8 clones? The one by Jag and now a Subaru. Our cars aren't going to be unique much longer it seems. In a couple of years will you see this style as often as a mustang? That would suck. We need more deviation!

Dont forget that one red chevy thats an obvious rip off.

Yeah, the Chevy SS in concept looked identical to the 8 down to the bloody rims! At least they changed the production truck. I seen one on the hwy the other day and the production doesn't look anything like the 8.

But then agian the doors on the 8 are directly from FORD. The working of the door is right off of the F150.

Last I heard Ford owned a "controlling interest" in Mazda. Around 30 percent or so. Not enough to say Ford owns Mazda. It is enough to say that Ford saved Mazda's ass when they bought in. Therefore, Ford has had a large amount of sway in the company while Mazda got back a little stability. Now Mazda is back in control a bit more and are releasing their new line of cars, the 6, 8, & 3. This is thier do or die time. If they fail this you can probably say good bye to Mazda and say Hello to the Ford Import Company.

By the way, this is just my view from what I have seen and read, and then pieced together. In other words its an opinion. Do some research and discover your own opinion. This is so far the most opinionated thing I have said yet on these boards. Feedback is appreciated though.

to clarify, ford owns a controlling portion of Mazda.. It is the primary business decision maker for the company.. therefore it wouldn't be too far fetched to simply say they "own" Mazda, even though, like somebody said, they don't really own the entire company.. But from that perspective, every public company is mostly "owned" by individual shareholders such as you and I.

This is correct. 34%. Controlling rights. I understand they have a japanese gentleman back at the helm again. It's been a while. Some european Ford execs have been running things.
