View Full Version : Finally got my RX-8 (Calgary)
cloud7 04-19-2007, 02:34 PM Hi guys, I have been on this board for a couple of months now and I finally picked up a 2007 RX8 GT today! I picked white because you don't see many white 8s out there and I have never owned a white car.
I will try to bring the car home right away after work because snow is suppose to start late this afternoon and I don't wanna get stuck with summer tires somewhere. I will post pics soon!
fbdevil 04-19-2007, 03:53 PM Welcome - you are going to love it !

cloud7 04-19-2007, 09:44 PM WOOHOO!! You finally made the jump! Last I heard you were still contemplating on the idea.. hehe now when's the next meet?
yup, I actually have been contemplating it for a few months... every since January. I don't know how often I'll be able to come to meets but I'll try to make it out if possible just to introduce myself. :Peace:
cloud7 04-19-2007, 09:47 PM Oh yeah, did you get the performance pack??
The performance package is still on back order... so I guess I'll get it when they have stock.
cloud7 04-19-2007, 09:57 PM Picture of the car before it started snowing... it is a little dirty now...

LiTTleRX-8 04-19-2007, 10:28 PM damn that is nice....
Just wondering, they are giving you the MS wheels, and letting you have the OEM wheels as well? Since in the other thread, there were some saying they only let you keep one set...
hunter84 04-19-2007, 10:54 PM Great looking machine !!!
Congrats !!! Normally not a white car guy but it looks great - enjoy !!
Gyro_Bot 04-20-2007, 11:19 AM Congrats on the new purchase! Your going to LOVE your new car!
Please go to TireRack and review the best tires for your car, for the environment you are in. TIRES make the car!
I got Potenza 960 AS PolePositions, because they are phenomenal in rainy conditions! and in BC it rains and rains and.. well you get the idea.
Talk to a tire specialist about whether: a perfect all season is better, or a secondary tire set for those occasional bad weather seasons is best.
It would be a shame to only enjoy your fabulous car's full potential 3/4 of the year ;)
ENJOY!!

Thanks! it is a blast to drive! I am keeping within 3-4K rpm most of the time, but went as high as 5K one time, because I needed more power. Really the car is gutless below 3500rpm... it will take some getting used to... For comparison, torque in my RSX Type S (pretty torqueless in its own right) starts to come at around 2500 rpm.
The clutch is a bit tricky... and the shift lever requires a bit more effort the RSX, which makes a bit more difficult to shift smoothly. Gas mileage is..... well, the needle points at 1/2 tank, and I only gone 210 km. Is it gonna improve after break-in??? most likely not, eh? since, I will probably shift at higher rpm after break-in period.
early 30's crisis 04-23-2007, 10:34 PM 210 is about what I get for half a tank if I'm lucky... and I redline it once every few days (sometimes twice a day if I'm feeling feisty ;))
I found it a different shifter and clutch to get used to too, my first few days were pretty choppy *insert embarrassed smile* pretty bad for driving a manual for over a decade! ha ha.
Did the dealer tell you to not rev over 5k for the break in?
I find it lugs under 3500, just doesnt sound right, and I stay away from anything that or less unless I am accelerating.. :)
Glad you're having fun and loving it.. it burrows its way into your soul!
cloud7 04-23-2007, 11:08 PM Did the dealer tell you to not rev over 5k for the break in?
no, the dealer didn't... actually I never did talk to the dealer people... I talked to the leasing company people, which didn't intro me to the car at all...
I am kind of following this:

newcastle 04-23-2007, 11:13 PM Great choice and enjoy!
BlueFrenzy 04-24-2007, 08:32 PM Cloud7 --> here are a couple of other break-in procedures.
RACING BEAT
- For the first 1000 miles (1609km) do not accelerate under full throttle.
- During the first 1000 miles (1609km) do not exceed 4000 RPM.
- For miles 1000-2000 (3218km), expand the RPM upwards - but do not accelerate at full throttle.
- Over 2000 miles (3218km), full throttle and high RPM is acceptable.
Japanese Rotary Mechanic
0-600 (965.4km) Follow the Manual, but keep it under 4000
600-800 (965.4 - 1287.2km) Open it up a bit, vary accelerations and speed RPM < 5000
800-1000 (1287.2 - 1609km) Drive the car, enjoy it but still keep RPM's < 6000
1000-1250 (1609 - 2011km) Drive it as it's powercurve intended it to be RPM's < 7000
1250-1500 (2011 - 2413.5km) Test the car frequently from RPM's 6000-9000 in every gear
> 1500 (2413.5km) Drive it anyway you want, U DA MAN NOW!!!!!!
Can't remember who (Mazda tech?)
0-100 miles 4000 rpm
100-200 miles 4500 rpm
200-300 miles 5000 rpm
300-400 miles 5500 rpm
400-500 miles 6000 rpm
500-600 miles 6500 rpm
600-700 miles 7000 rpm
700-800 miles 7500 rpm
I know the manual says you don't have to follow any specified break-in, but just to be on the safe side I did. In my opinion, the Racing Beat is very conservative and torture if you don't put much mileage on your car (like me). Personally, I followed the break-in suggested by the Japanese.
The mileage on your car usually improves as you put mileage on (about 50-100km/tank). 210 is pretty decent for half a tank. It's been awhile since I drove the RSX, but I thought the shift effort was more on the RSX (it was a base one thought)???
dying_here 04-24-2007, 08:38 PM wow 210 .. why am I getting shitty mileage.
if I drive very carefully ( change gear at ~ 3k rpm).. no red line... minimal rush hour I get ~ 190-200km/half a tank. thats usually Mon to Fri to and from school (10am class so I dodge the morning rush hour)
if I drive with a bit more spirit, a few red line, change gear at ~ 5-6k rpm.. I get ~ 150-160km/half a tank .
except for long highway road trip driving, i've yet to be able to break 200km/half a tank.

Thanks for the breakin info.! I have the Type S and it has the best shifter I have ever experienced (RX-8 is not bad either but it does take a bit more effort)... I could shift with one finger if I want on the RSX-S... that's how good it is. Type S tranny is much better than base tranny.
cloud7 04-24-2007, 11:54 PM I am have now driven 270 km and I am only at 3/8ths tank. I guess I'll need to fill up before the weekend.
rotten42 04-25-2007, 12:11 AM I usually get about 340km's before the light goes on. This is in rush hour traffic conditions. My mileage is way better on highway cruises even if I have my foot into it doign 9k runs.
I never got any better mileage by driving at low revs...besides what's the point? Why buy a car that revs to 9k and not use it.
LiTTleRX-8 04-25-2007, 12:50 AM I consistently get 420-ish km a tank...A little bit of city driving, the rest is more open road (Crowchild). It gets a little worse sometimes when i get stuck in traffic, but it doesn't happen too often. Redline doesn't seem to affect it that much, because I shift right at redline when it beeps, I don't hold it at redline or high rpms for long period of time.
I have gotten 510-ish km on my long road trip to Vancouver.
Also, the gas mileage went up a bit as more km was put on the engine...I was getting 360-ish km early in my ownership (might be my shifting...might be engine, though many have said their gas mileages have improved as engined mileage grew)
fbdevil 04-25-2007, 09:48 AM I usually get anywhere from 380 to 410 to a tank in mixed stop and go / suburbia traffic. Other than the recalls I haven’t had any problems with my 8 (04 SS M6 GT). I pretty much treat it the way I did my 1st gen RX7 (which I sold after 9 years – Kids come, car goes – with 179,000 trouble free Km)
Anyone feel free to add their comments, but this is what works for me.
I never go above 4000 rpm until it is fully warmed up. (Once warm I hit at least 5000 before shifting)
I always hit 8500 to9000 rpm at least a couple of times every time I take it out. (I have never had any problem with carbon buildup)
I don’t worry about gas mileage.
I check the oil level every third tank of fuel and don’t add any unless I can put in a full liter. (The oil in your rotary not only provides lubrication but actually is required to help cool the engine)
I change the oil ever 5000Km.
I never start the 8 cold and shut it off before it warms up.
Oh, Cloud7 – wipe the smile off your face. Have fun.
cloud7 04-26-2007, 08:00 PM just filled up today because the low fuel light came on... I was able to go 377 km on approximately 50L of fuel... apparently there is still 10L worth of fuel when the light came on. So, I estimate that I could have gone approx. 450km on a tank of fuel... so about 13 L/100 km I guess.

SlowLude 05-02-2007, 11:00 AM Nice!! Time for some mods!! I only get about 330kms before its time to fill up. And I don't even rev the car that much all the time. I do shift at 4000 (when the temp is good) when driving regularly. :dunno:
