View Full Version : Mesmerized by the water dance...
khoney 09-22-2003, 07:31 PM OK, this is starting to become a safety hazard! If any of you have driven the RX-8 in the rain, you probably know what I'm talking about. Yes, it's the two little pools of water that start out as a bunch of droplets all over the hood, and then start clumping together in each leg of the rotary 'V' on the hood. The water pools together and starts to look like it is boiling or dancing on the hood. I find my eyes being drawn to them... NO!!! MUST... KEEP... EYES... ON THE ROAD!!! But they are calling me, beckoning me to watch every subtle nuance of their motion. I MUST GET RID OF THEM!! Full throttle to 90MPH, and they disappear over the top of the hood. PHEW! I slow to 70, and I concentrate on driving once again.... BUT WAIT, THEY'RE COMING BACK! ARRRGGGHHH!
mikeb 09-22-2003, 08:00 PM no rain on my 8 yet , thank god
Bengal Tiger 09-22-2003, 08:01 PM look up at the sunroof when it's raining too...it's really cool.
Genom 09-22-2003, 08:09 PM I too have been mesmerized by those dancing pools of water. They tell me to do things.
bad things...

LOL.... Yeah, the first time I saw this, I was like "Cool, my own personal dancing water show..."
red_rx8_red_int 09-22-2003, 09:27 PM LOL also. It is mesmerizing (SP?).

ROFLMAO- I thought we were the only ones! They're awful because you just can't help but stare at them! There were complaints about the V throwing water up the windshield- we've never had that, but those dancing water pools are there every time it rains.

My wife and I were driving to an RX-8 meet in Houston this weekend and it was raining. I mentioned to her how cool I thought the water was in the rotor indentions on the hood. I knew before I even read your note, just by the subject exactly what you were talking about. It is the one thing that really makes me smile driving my 8 in the rain. It's still fun to drive in the rain, but I wash and Zaino mine every time it gets the least bit dirty. So it's nice to have something that doesn't make me hate the wash job so much.
The aerodynamics that cause that is pretty fascinating to think about isn't it? :)

Just thought I would point out, this is really really bad advice. I'm staying the hell away from you RX-8 guys in the rain :p

Hey, you can look up at the sunroof at a stoplight :)
aussie77 09-23-2003, 10:45 AM I know what you mean Ike. I am beginning to feel relieved I haven't seen another 8 out on the road yet.

cruzdreamer 09-23-2003, 03:52 PM That is hilarious...do they look like cloud formations that look like something else? This car is so UNIQUE!!! Love it. Hope mine will tell me to do good things!
rx8daniel 09-23-2003, 05:03 PM I've tried to weave a little back and forth to throw the water out - but it's hard to do. Too hard in interstate traffic for sure...
zoom44 09-23-2003, 05:13 PM the bad thing they make me do is once i realize i was staring at them i go faster to try to make them fly off. but the aerodynamics keep the wind off of your hood at least to around 70mph and then they pool right back together when you slow down! i have not seen any shapes yet but im sure i will if i just keep staring at those dancing mercury blobs long enough. they look just like mercury on my sunlight silver:D

I posted this same observation a long time ago. Cool huh?:)
cruzdreamer 09-24-2003, 08:18 AM I have always been intrigued by mercury...the way it looks and moves....hmm, good thing i am getting the sunlight silver too!
Irish_in_a_RX8 09-24-2003, 08:34 AM ...could be the T1000 from Terminator 2
mikeb 09-24-2003, 05:35 PM my car is red so will it look like my hood is on fire
r0tor 09-24-2003, 06:05 PM I remember the first time I had my friends in the car when it rained... everyone including myself were speechless
CjsfastSS 02-22-2004, 02:21 AM It's wonderful that I have something else to look forward too, but I have the Nordic Green RX-8, so I'm going to be seeing a bunch of leprichans, GREAT.

all this time i thought i was the only one that did that! i sometimes downshift and floor it to try and get those puddles to fly off but they just sit there...and it's always at the same two exact spots where the water gathers...
93rdcurrent 02-22-2004, 10:49 AM BRx8 I'm with you. My wife and I did the same thing. I didn't even think to do a search but this thread is hillarious.
moRotorMotor 02-22-2004, 12:02 PM I just brake really hard to get rid of the pool of water but after a while it comes back again. I learned to just ignore it since I'll either drive till it stops raining or I'll reach my destination. It's amazing what a coat of wax can do because the water on the hood just fly off and appear dry when going above 60 km/h.
DemonRX-8 02-22-2004, 02:13 PM Note to self: must go out for a drive when it rains next. How hard should it be raining? I have yet to drive the car in the rain after a month!
Rotary Nut 02-22-2004, 03:17 PM For those of you that hand wash your cars look at the shape of the water that pools at the point in the depression at the center of the hood!
Looks like a rotor to me
I, Claudius 02-22-2004, 04:55 PM Y'all need a hobby. Other than the car, I mean.
In a moderate rain @ freeway speeds, you can keep the sunroof back and little to no rain enters the car.
J.U. Stone Day 02-23-2004, 05:10 AM The pooled rain water is EVIL. I will get rid of them once and for all by putting spackling paste onto my hood and getting rid of those canals. After spackling, I will use Varethane clear liquid plastic to "clear coat" the area. If I use a super-fine-haired painter's brush, it will look professional. Hell, I might even sell the kit to Mazda dealerships.
I will call my masterpiece "Wood Furniture Meets Automobile."
vegas RX8 02-23-2004, 02:59 PM Those puddles of water are awesome....they make you just wanna get them off so they can collect again. It finally rained here in vegas for the last few days..it's great. Although having a dirty car sucks. Great post everyone.
Kwullen 07-05-2004, 06:03 PM Try turning a bit and NAILING the brakes. I don't know WTF the water puddles do, but catching the car again is a riot!!
