View Full Version : AEM intake issue
mikeb 04-17-2007, 08:40 PM my car bogs down or acts funny at high rpm
i just had the coils changed and the cat is not clogged
so i am thinking its the AEM cold air intake
do you think switching to racing beat intake would help?????
lurch519 04-17-2007, 08:52 PM no, just get the aem installed correctly. ive been running mine for a year and a half, no issues except when i had a vac leak
chrism 04-17-2007, 08:56 PM dont think its the coils because my car is running allot better with them
Moostafa29 04-17-2007, 09:00 PM He's had the intake for awhile, so I'm pretty sure its installed fine. Mike, if you still have the old intake, try installing that to see if there are any differences.
lurch519 04-17-2007, 09:02 PM well, if the intake has been in the car awhile, then its most likely not the intake at all
Razz1 04-17-2007, 11:44 PM Don't forget the ECU has to reset after you make changes like new coils.
mikeb 04-18-2007, 02:29 AM i installed the intake myself
i have had it for awhile
i just dont think it could be anything else
i dont have my stock intake
the car just doesnt run well when i hit high rpm
it sound like the intake is the issue
thats all
TeamRX8 04-18-2007, 01:46 PM it could be any number of things, how you deduced that it's the AEM intake, which is the same as the Mazdaspeed intake, is beyond me :dunno:
mikeb 04-18-2007, 05:32 PM the reason i say its the intake is because i just had the car at mazda and they did a full inspection and replaced the coils
the car is in top condition
i dont know what else it could be
TeamRX8 04-18-2007, 06:16 PM do you have the DryFlow filter?
mikeb 04-19-2007, 01:31 AM no
why
swoope 04-19-2007, 01:57 AM mike,
sounds like you dont know much about mech stuff.. find someone local. lots in you area.. to help you...
i know that is harsh, but it is honest.
beers
Trekk 04-19-2007, 07:37 AM Where in the rpms are you having the problem? 5-6-7-8
Aero8 04-19-2007, 09:51 AM did you try taking the filter off and making sure it is clean? if you have had it on for awhile it may be coated in crap.
mikeb 04-19-2007, 10:48 AM swoope,
i dont know alot and im paying thru the noise to fix this thing
so far i have changed coils, spark plugs, transmission flush, oil change, new gas cap and still the car bogs down and runs like crap at 5 to 6k rpm
is it a clogged cat
is it the aem intake
shit i dont know
lurch519 04-19-2007, 12:06 PM did you try cleaning the MAF. if not, the oil from the aem filter may be on it and causting the car not to run right
Trekk 04-19-2007, 12:06 PM If my car was acting up I'd
Check the airfilter for to much crap
Check if all the intake runners are opening
Check the maf for dirt/oil/crap
If that didnt do it, I'd unbolt the cat and take it for a spin.
If that still wasnt enough I'd try to check the fuel filter/pump.
If none of that did it I'd start looking for a good shop or start reading up alot.

i would think the cat would be your no 1 answer.

TeamRX8 04-19-2007, 02:25 PM or a clogged filter since it's going off at upper rpms. Cleaning their latest filter, which is the DryFlow, is easy. The older style filter I know nothing about. I think it was oil based like a K&N.
A new DryFlow filter will run you about $70 from Summit Racing, Jegs, etc. if you want to upgrade it; 3.5" inlet x 9" long
only other thing I can think of is the internal intake runner flappers aren't opening up :dunno:

i was thinking the apvs also, but that generally with give a cel.
beers
mikeb 04-19-2007, 05:29 PM thanks guys
the car did have a CEL but then the dealer changed the coils and its gone now
i am putting the stock intake on tomorrow to see if that is the issue
i called the dealer and they said the cat was not clogged but i dont know if they really checked when they serviced my car

I believe only if it sticks open, if it doesn't open then no power and no CEL :dunno:
RoXanneBlack8 04-19-2007, 06:02 PM you can manually command any port to open. the VDI, APV, and SSV all can be opened and closed manually thru a computer, like say, the computers they use at mazda dealers. but, if u walk in and ask to have the intake ports checked thatd prolly be the first time they were evr asked that.
mikeb 04-23-2007, 01:22 PM I put the stock intake on and the car runs better
but its still bogs down around 6pm
