View Full Version : rotory engines....
asalian18 04-09-2007, 12:54 AM So im new to this.......but why are rotory engines under torqued? cause we all know torque wins the races and hp sells the car. with a 232hp and 159tq.......and with gas mileage of 18/24 why not go buy a vw r32 or evo......or another sports car at 30 gs?
cshakesby 04-09-2007, 12:56 AM well it all depends on what kind of car your going for. If your looking for a car that you can modify more and race with it, i would deffinately go with the evo. Personally, i like rotary engines, because i grew up around rx-7s. It really all depends on what u want the car for
Simple, not everyone wants to same thing in a car. There is a lot more to a car than the sum of its numbers, and horsepower isn't everything. I can't believe I just said that...
Drkdelfi 04-09-2007, 01:02 AM because rotarys are the shit
asalian18 04-09-2007, 01:06 AM well dont get me wrong i test drove the rx-8 and loved it.......and i think the body designe and interor is so .......well one word (might sound gay ) HOT!!! but the engine was a lil disapointing.........i was hoping with 250hp there would be the torque to take it to the finish line.......how am i supose to tell my friend in his turbo focus i lost to him cause i didnt have the toqure to bet him and spent that 25k on my car...... :(
LiveToRev 04-09-2007, 01:07 AM Because of the stroke.
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 01:11 AM it seems that all you want to do is beat your friends turbo'd car. if thats your goal, the rx8 is not for you, why dont you just go get an evo then. i personally was looking for a well balanced car. i also didn't want to deal with a FI car either so i ended up getting the 8 and im fully satisfied with it. If all you want to do is show up you friend, go get something else.
asalian18 04-09-2007, 01:13 AM well why then does it get such crappy gas milage like a v8 but its just a 1.3
SolarFlare665 04-09-2007, 01:14 AM tell your pal in his focus that it's still just a focus and chicks dig the 8 :p
asalian18 04-09-2007, 01:15 AM hehehe.......well i say that to him all the time......
ken-x8 04-09-2007, 01:31 AM well dont get me wrong i test drove the rx-8 and loved it.......and i think the body designe and interor is so .......well one word (might sound gay ) HOT!!! but the engine was a lil disapointing.........i was hoping with 250hp there would be the torque to take it to the finish line.......how am i supose to tell my friend in his turbo focus i lost to him cause i didnt have the toqure to bet him and spent that 25k on my car...... :(
Easy. Look him in the eye and say "I lost to you because I didn't have the torque to beat you."
Now, was that so hard?
swoope 04-09-2007, 01:33 AM Simple, not everyone wants to same thing in a car. There is a lot more to a car than the sum of its numbers, and horsepower isn't everything. I can't believe I just said that...
that had to hurt..
omg.

you know nothing.. take some time to read and learn..
or please buy anything you mentioned..
beers
rowteree 04-09-2007, 01:39 AM seems like all you really care about is straight line speed and not style and balance. So what if he beats you in a straight line, i dare him to try and take you on the corners. Plus you're the one thats going to be getting all the chicks
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 01:43 AM don't forget about driving skill. can't corner well if you dont know how to drive your vehicle. and cornering is only helpful on track racing, auto crossing and canyon running. in everyday situations, "kids" prefer the straight line.
asalian18 04-09-2007, 01:52 AM a well balanced car is nice but in the streets of the bay all they want to do is run lines......why not use a mazda speed3 other than the rotory engine and style what makes the rx-8 stand out
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 01:55 AM so you already made up your mind that the rx8 is not for you. don't forget street racing is illegal :) darn kids. get an evo or something
Detrich 04-09-2007, 01:57 AM all the movies like fast n the furious don't help their cause...
asalian18 04-09-2007, 01:58 AM i know u guys must hate me already :Eyecrazy: with all these questions.......but i like to know stuff before i jump in to it. dont get me wrong im gonna look at a nother rx-8 tomorrow cause im pretty seriouse bout buyin one... only consurn i have is im gonna be movin to the city (san fransico) and the city milage is scaryin me off.....under torque is somethin i can deal with who know i might just do that ls1 swap people are talkin about :)
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 01:58 AM all the movies like fast n the furious don't help their cause...
tell me about it... the worst thing of all is that spoiled kids get some crazy cars that they end up just messing up in street races. some of these kids don't even know how to drive and are inexperienced with cars and how to mod them....
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:00 AM if you're going to do an ls1, why not buy a muscle car then? instead of buying a car, spending money a hell of a lot of money on swapping it out? this is getting stupid now..
swoope 04-09-2007, 02:00 AM a well balanced car is nice but in the streets of the bay all they want to do is run lines......why not use a mazda speed3 other than the rotory engine and style what makes the rx-8 stand out
why are you asking these ?s... if you dont know about a rotary then read.. if you want a fast straight line car this is not your forum..
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting.php
and you can use google also..
beers
carbroke 04-09-2007, 02:00 AM Rotary engine is very unique structure which it only produce by MAZDA~! that is why I love this engine and car. I can't understand why people droping LS1 in to the FD. HP is not everything. Rx8 is built for cornering killer.
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:05 AM the rotary was built as a well balanced car. not as a dyno queen, people can do whatever the hell they want to their car, but whats the point of buying a rx7 or rx8 and just putting an ls1 in it? buy an old corvette or something.
asalian18 04-09-2007, 02:10 AM about that muscle car question i have a 74 corvette stingray which ive been workin on since 2004 i got it all lookin nice and plan on a engine/transmisson swap maybe by the end of summer. i was sayin ls1 cause i saw it earlyer on the form a big disscusion about it.....seemed like a nice idea. im not one of those kids who do all that "drifting" things. dont get me wrong i love to hop in my vette and take a corner like no mans bussnies cause its kinda exciting but once in a while cool
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:12 AM its not just the drifting thing, its the racing thing. if you have a corvette, why are you looking at the rx8 to beat your friend's focus? this is not making sense now.
asalian18 04-09-2007, 02:14 AM cause he says its not fair when i whoop him one.........you know that ...... " oh you have 4 more cylinders than me bs...." + i want a sweet daily driver my 99 jetta vr6 isnt cuttin it for me any more....
swoope 04-09-2007, 02:15 AM about that muscle car question i have a 74 corvette stingray which ive been workin on since 2004 i got it all lookin nice and plan on a engine/transmisson swap maybe by the end of summer. i was sayin ls1 cause i saw it earlyer on the form a big disscusion about it.....seemed like a nice idea. im not one of those kids who do all that "drifting" things. dont get me wrong i love to hop in my vette and take a corner like no mans bussnies cause its kinda exciting but once in a while cool
then a picture should be easy.. get us one...
beers
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:17 AM go with a r32 or evo or sti then. the evo and sti both have 4 cyl and are turbo'd. why don't you just let him say all the shi* he wants and don't let it get to you... when it comes down to it, its just a focus...

asalian18 04-09-2007, 02:23 AM its my baby =))
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:23 AM this thread is now becoming pointless
swoope 04-09-2007, 02:28 AM thx,
so i am more confused... run the bitch with your jacked up vette..
btw. the jetta in the back is not a vr6.
why r y here?
beers
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:28 AM lets just put it this way, the fact that you want straight line performance and high hp and torque, means that the rx8 is not for you. might as well get the mazdaspeed 3 if you're interested in the mazda family still. if not, there are several cars in the search field for you that are around the same price as the rx8. this is what it comes down to
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:29 AM i'm getting as frustrated as you are swoope.

this is my 99 jetta vr6 the other one my beater 85 jetta
N rider89 04-09-2007, 02:34 AM you have a stingray use that to beat him
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:34 AM so you have 4 cars total? why get another one, why not build up the vr6? why am i still replying to this damn thread?
asalian18 04-09-2007, 02:34 AM i'm getting as frustrated as you are swoope.
sry dude.......you got a pic of your 8?
N rider89 04-09-2007, 02:35 AM wait wait wait. your big car you race against is a turbo Focus?
N rider89 04-09-2007, 02:35 AM so you have 4 cars total? why get another one, why not build up the vr6? why am i still replying to this damn thread?
its fun:D:
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:36 AM you have a stingray use that to beat him
we already went through this question... i find it stupid because at the same time, the rotary has no pistons and when he whoops your ass, just be like you have more pistons than i do. i dont even know what im talking about anymore
asalian18 04-09-2007, 02:36 AM you have a stingray use that to beat him
i did but like i said he says it not a fair race so im tryin to find a car in the 240hp/tq catagory so it would be fair and also somethin i wouldnt mind keep cause i like the way it looks thats why i was thinkin an rx8
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:37 AM sry dude.......you got a pic of your 8?

asalian18 04-09-2007, 02:38 AM so you have 4 cars total? why get another one, why not build up the vr6? why am i still replying to this damn thread?
i have a total of 3 cars my project vette, a daily 99 jetta vr6 and a beater ( which just chills cause i dont have the heart to get rid of it) 85 jetta gl =D
N rider89 04-09-2007, 02:38 AM i did but like i said he says it not a fair race so im tryin to find a car in the 240hp/tq catagory so it would be fair and also somethin i wouldnt mind keep cause i like the way it looks thats why i was thinkin an rx8
so you have a hp restriction?
asalian18 04-09-2007, 02:39 AM not recent ones and i have some on my camera phone that i cant upload for some reason to my comp.
you try to send it to your email ( if you have verizon thats how i do it) and upload to photobucket and get the IMG thing and post...... :cwm27:
asalian18 04-09-2007, 02:41 AM so you have a hp restriction?
well the reason im not going evo/sti......well lest face it there ugly and every mother and son has it the psi is cranked up the ass and if u mess up a shift BOOOM your engines gone.......so for a daily driver i want to keep it all motor so i dont get to gas happy and it happens to me

Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 04-09-2007, 02:44 AM i wouldnt mind the evo ix, or a 99 subaru imprezza 2.5rs. they are awesome cars, it was just that the hp thing is not my cup of tea. cause its not all about hp

Brettus 04-09-2007, 04:53 AM Can't believe I just read all that crap .
BTW - to the OP - what's a Rotory ?
dbright007 04-09-2007, 10:49 AM Bump - cause this is some funny sht
rotarygod 04-09-2007, 01:03 PM So im new to this.......but why are rotory engines under torqued? cause we all know torque wins the races and hp sells the car.
Where did you hear that crap? torque does NOTHING! It does no work. Only horsepower matters as horsepower is a unit of work. torque isn't therefore it can't do anything. If you have more torque you have more horsepower. Horsepower wins races. Even though torque and horsepower are mathematically related, they are not the same. Since torque does no work and horsepower does, it is the horsepower that wins races. Period.
with a 232hp and 159tq.......and with gas mileage of 18/24 why not go buy a vw r32 or evo......or another sports car at 30 gs?
Why not go buy a Mercedes? Why not go buy a used car for cheaper such as an old S4 Vette? Why not buy a Civic and install a turbo kit on it? Why not buy a Miata and install a turbo on it? The point is that it's personal preference. Hopefully that's why you buys cars. There are some people that only care about fast for as cheap as they can and could care less about anything else. They have cars for those people too. Other people want luxury and safety and could care less about total 0-60 acceleration. We have those cars too. Others want a nicely balanced car that does everything well but nothing perfectly. We have those too. Ask yourself what you want out of a car and decide from there. Only you can make the decision. Personally I'll take a rotary powered sports car over any other engine powered sports car (or wanna be sports car) out there regardless of power, price, or mileage but that's just me. Others wouldn't. It's all about personal preference.
FlyLow 04-09-2007, 01:23 PM 7 pages and 20 minutes of my life i will never get back

Gotta agree with that as well! There was no choice when looking at other cars... I halfway looked at the G35/350z, the 328I and Z4 coupes, the Miata, and even the Mustang. But nothing else even came close in handling, feel, and overall performance. There is no other choice for me other than Rotary power for a sports car.
CarAndDriver 04-09-2007, 01:29 PM Rotory loves Suntory.
Icemark 04-09-2007, 01:31 PM shouldn't that be Sapporo (the beer brewed in the same city as the RX-8 is made)

I'm not going to nit-pick your post and make corrections. Nevertheless, torque relates directly to acceleration. Your statement "horsepower win races" is correct in a very loose sense. However, peak horsepower is just one number at one specific rpm value. It therefore tells just a very narrow part of the story. What matters most is the entire torque versus rpm curve.
Cheers
More_Revs 04-09-2007, 02:15 PM So im new to this.......but why are rotory engines under torqued? cause we all know torque wins the races and hp sells the car. with a 232hp and 159tq.......and with gas mileage of 18/24 why not go buy a vw r32 or evo......or another sports car at 30 gs?
I learned something new today. Are we doing burnout contest?
More_Revs 04-09-2007, 02:51 PM ok, i'm bored at work.
so we're starting the hp vs. tq debate again huh...power and torque are proportional to each other, so bigger area under the tq curve = bigger area under the power curve. It's just a matter of which number you like better. Last time I check, physics says torque is what required to accelerate a mass; and power is what required to move a mass at a given speed. So even if you have all the tq in the world to give you rocket acceleration, if you don't have the required power to go to that speed, you ain't going there.
Semi truck has quatripple digit torque to accelerate that huge load, but don't have the top speed to move it fast becasue it "only" has 300 or so hp.
rotarygod 04-09-2007, 03:01 PM Your interpretation of physics are wrong. Check it again. Torque is a resistance to twist and nothing more. Horsepower adds time into the equation and time is neccesary to do work. Even though they are mathmatically related, they are not the same. Torque does absolutely no work at all. None. Horespower does. Accelerating a mass takes place over time therefore it is horsepower and not torque doing the accelerating. Please do not argue this again. If you don't agree, you are wrong! Period!

I hear the performance increases come from a rotory engine.
mac11 04-09-2007, 03:37 PM I hear the performance increases come from a rotory engine.
I heard it was from the muffler belts.
ken-x8 04-09-2007, 03:40 PM I learned something new today. Are we doing burnout contest?
As in burning out the forum? Looks like it.
The OP, whether his intent was to troll or not, has achieved the ultimate troll result: he's got some of us arguing with each other.
Ken
More_Revs 04-09-2007, 03:43 PM Calm down. Who said I was arguing with you? I was never the one into the arguement about tq vs hp. Check my post before that, I was never into the whole tq thing to begin with.
So I had a couple bad choice of words and a typo stating torque as force, but that's just rotational vs. linear. It was supposed to be a 30,000ft view, no need to get technical here. The basic point was speed is a result of power. And races are win by covering a fix distance at the least time or the most distance in a fix time, therefore speed win races and power win races. So that's what I got for trying to reinforce the god's statement of power win races. I suppose you don't need backup, because god is always right.
I knew I shouldn't have done this at work. At least the boss didn't see me.
reaper1 04-09-2007, 03:44 PM WOW ! I have a headache.

Rotarygod. I'm not trying to pick a fight. However, I am a physicist and I disagree with some of your statements. Some of what you say is correct, but some of it is not quite right (i.e. acceleration is instantaneous and is not defined over a finite interval of time) which screws up your logic.
For others, wikipedia has a nice review of torque that also covers some of the concepts of torque, work, power, and energy.

Once again RG, I'm trying to start a shouting match with you. You can even have the last word if you like in this thread. However, I had my say and will leave it at that. Sound O.K.?
Cheers
ken-x8 04-09-2007, 04:49 PM If someone else can have a word...
Acceleration may be defined at an instant, but it's a rate (as is speed) and there is a time interval involved. It's a differential time interval, but it's still there and you can't forget that it's a rate.
If you think in terms of torque as a force, it's not torque out of the crankshaft that matters for acceleration. It's the forward force that the tires exert on the road...which depends on torque and gear ratio and tire diameter. Torque is different at the various points in this chain - but (allowing for frictional losses) horsepower is constant. Once you think of torque and gear ratios and rpm, you're down to horsepower.
Now, when you consider the practical aspects of accelerating off the line (engine either at low RPM or throwing away power by slipping the clutch) there's a lot to be said for an engine with high torque at low rpm. Very often better for drag racing than an engine with higher power but not as torquey down low. But since accleration always comes down to adding kinetic energy to the vehicle, it still amounts to how much power you put down on the ground.
Power to the ground, not torque at the flywheel!!

this thread fails to deliver.
Groundrush 04-09-2007, 05:08 PM i did but like i said he says it not a fair race so im tryin to find a car in the 240hp/tq catagory so it would be fair and also somethin i wouldnt mind keep cause i like the way it looks thats why i was thinkin an rx8
Eh....you want to buy a car for $17k plus (approx. minimum cost to get into a used 8), specifically in this horsepower range, strictly for the purpose of street racing a friend's Focus? Uhm.... :cwm27:
Buy a used Civic and rice the hell out of it. Make sure you get a big ass wing on the back. Makes it faster.
refugeefrompistons 04-09-2007, 05:18 PM :-D lovely civics with huge wings, makes u feel good, bc something else isnt as big
9291150 04-09-2007, 06:14 PM I just read this whole thread and can't remember what it's about...
Oh, I remember thinking C3 Corvette's are to the car world what disco is to music...
And I'm hungry...
nycgps 04-09-2007, 06:20 PM Turbo Focus ? Your friend is a retard.
Wow, I just spent 10 minutes of my life to read this crap, I want my time back !
alerx-8's 04-09-2007, 07:48 PM a turbo focus is right next to worth nothing
SolarFlare665 04-09-2007, 07:59 PM shouldn't that be Sapporo (the beer brewed in the same city as the RX-8 is made)
i know i'm taking this thread to nicaragua but,
i love sapporo beer... and kirin too... but more so sapporo... 22oz cans ftw... as a joke when me and a buncha friends got really drunk we thought about welding the cans together for a Sapporo race exhaust... but then we sobered up the next morning and were like "well that was a lame idea", but it was pretty funny at the time
