View Full Version : Getting a new Car.. rx8 maybe?
mike3770 04-08-2007, 11:29 PM Well asking if the rx8 is a good, reliable car on a all rx8 forum is pretty stupid but whatever, i want to look into things before I go and buy a 20,000 car. I have always loved the way rx8's look and now that I have a chance to get one I am really thinking about it but I have been reading a lot and are they even reliable? I mean with recalls and people having to replace there motors with not much miles at all, I want a car that I can trust and use as a everyday driver but still have a blast driving it. Dont get me wrong just about every car has some sort of flaw but if I were to get a 8 will I regret it in the long run? Honestly do you guys like your RX8's and do you regret buying it?
carbonRX8 04-08-2007, 11:34 PM Everything you need is right here! (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=73846&highlight=search)
CarAndDriver 04-08-2007, 11:34 PM Glutton for punishment? Look at the menu bar at the top of the screen and choose Search and then Advanced Search.
I regret buying my 8, I should have bought a Pontiac Aztek.
carbonRX8 04-08-2007, 11:39 PM Aztek iz da shizzle!
mike3770 04-08-2007, 11:44 PM yeah I know this kind of question has been asked many times but theres so much to look threw I thought I could get some opinions from some of you.

My opinion: learn to read. Priceless.
carbonRX8 04-08-2007, 11:47 PM No. This question has never been asked before. We are just giving you a hard time 'cause we suck as people.
ken-x8 04-08-2007, 11:51 PM You might draw a few opinions in this thread, but there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of previous posts with opinions and information on the topic. You're leaving a lot on the table if you don't spend a while browsing through the archives.
I regret buying my RX-8. I hate it. I hate myself for buying it. For punishment, I'm going to make myself drive it every day for the next 10 years. Maybe longer.

I've been an owner since Aug 2003, about 50k miles, same engine, never flooded, no regrets.
mike3770 04-09-2007, 12:03 AM I wasent expecting everyone to be like I love my car, buy one, I just wanted to know what people thought of it. Thanks for being dicks. I will now use the search button and try to find some informative threads.
carbonRX8 04-09-2007, 12:05 AM Let me disect this post in detail. There is much we can learn. Well asking if the rx8 is a good, reliable car on a all rx8 forum is pretty stupid Here, he is appealing to his cute, wide-eyed newbieism. Note the plaintive tone. but whatever, i want to look into things before I go and buy a 20,000 car.
Here, he is suggesting that he is an intellegent creature, capaple of rational desision making through research. I have always loved the way rx8's look and now that I have a chance to get one I am really thinking about it Hey, we all love RX8s! Who doesn't? But here comes the true evil intention of his post...
but I have been reading a lot and are they even reliable?
So now he is suggesting that he has done all this reseach and he has preconcluded that the RX8 is unreliable. How does one suggest that they are interested in a car, ask for help in research, then suggest they have done the research and concluded that it is a POS? Can we conclude anything but that the OP is nothing but two legs with a mound of jello on top? I mean with recalls and people having to replace there motors with not much miles at all, Really? Where are all these recalls? Where are all these replaced motors? I want a car that I can trust and use as a everyday driver but still have a blast driving it. Well, if I follow your logic, it can't be the RX. So why are you posting? Dont get me wrong just about every car has some sort of flaw but if I were to get a 8 will I regret it in the long run? Honestly do you guys like your RX8's and do you regret buying it? If you would have spent some actual time reading, you would already know.

cshakesby 04-09-2007, 12:47 AM well..i jsut got my rx-8 this past thursday...and i love it. I personally think its extremely fun to drive. Alot of people dont like it because the rotary engine isnt that popular, but for some reason thats what makes me love the rotary. My dad grew up with an rx-7, so i guess the rotary kinda ran from me to him. Although i havent had the car for very long, i say its great. Its also a really good chick magnet if you ask me haha...the girls at my work are loving it.
mike3770 04-09-2007, 12:48 AM yeah I guess I did it just pisses me off how I just wanted some info on this car and instead of people being like "I like it alot but i had this happened" or Its a nice car and I havent had problems at all" you guys were streight up like fuck you use the search button and werent much help at all.
cshakesby- thats what I was pretty much looking for when I wanted to know some peoples reviews, I appreciate it.
CarAndDriver 04-09-2007, 12:50 AM I hear the girls love the Civic Si better. Go check out the Honda Civic forums.

cshakesby 04-09-2007, 12:51 AM lol if you think so..you can go ahead and get urself a civic...ill pass you with the rx-8 and a beautiful girl
cshakesby 04-09-2007, 12:53 AM Mike, also comparing to a Nissan 350Z, which is what my dad drives, and ive had the chance to drive them both, i feel that the rx-8 is a better all around car, yea it doesnt hvae as much power as the 350 but its a smoother ride and all in all more fun to drive.
shaunv74 04-09-2007, 12:55 AM I like it a lot and nothing has happened to mine. It's the most reliable fun to drive car I have ever owned. No BS
every car has recalls. They don't cost you anything so just make sure they are done.
Now go use the search button. and search Threads like...
The little things
Are you satisfied with your 8 (97% highly satisfied)
Recalls
flooding
SolarFlare665 04-09-2007, 01:01 AM dude seriously, just drive it... if you like it, take it home... if regular maintenance is an issue buy something less maintenance heavy. if affording regular maintenance and possibly snow tires if you live up north is an issue, buy something thats not RWD.
i hate the reliability question just because any car can be reliable as long as its cared for and maintained... being a rotary does not mean OMG TIME BOMB. its the second most reliable car i've ever owned... it starts when i turn the key and it turns when i turn the wheel... it even stops really fast when i jam the brakes on.
the only more reliable car I've had was my parents 82 Oldsmobile POS wagon... and only reason that was more reliable was i beat the hell out of it; did no maintenance and it ran like a champ... but occasionally the steering column would lock in place while driving, but that was in 99-00.
i don't regret my 05 shinka one bit, but first thing i did before i even joined this site was i drove the car. you can tell more by driving than you can by someone saying "well i had x problem caused by y." if possible get a long test drive, see if they'll let you take it over night.
i'll tell my story and see if you can relate:
my rx8 story started when i was just hangin out with my parents one night talkin to my dad about gettin a new car, i did mention the rx8 which my dad erased from my mind cause his friends wife had one and said it was slow and had no pickup. now my dad's been driving sports cars a long time both import and domestic so his opinion really counted.
but anyway, i was actually looking for a trans am cause i've always wanted one, went to my local pontiac dealer and asked about it, they had one on the lot but wanted more than i thought it was worth to me... so i drove home, down dealership alley... one of my friends suggested a miata cause i was getting rid of the sunfire and was getting a sports car... coulda been a 350z (i come from a long line of z owners) at that point, but i liked having 4 doors and easy access back seats.
so i saw five 8's on the lot... i test drove it, up the highway down the winding back road and back to the dealer. i wanted the car then and there. told the dealer to let me sleep on it.
i slept on it for 7 months (mostly that was saving a big down payment)... after i drove it, did my research, learned about was a marvel of modern engineering the wankel really is, bought my blackcherry 05 shinka in february of 06 and i couldn't be happier with the car.
this story is really alot more detailed cause i basically thought about it from june/july of 05 to feb of 06 but most of it is boring and involves long talks with other gearheads and car people about what i should get.
and all i needed to do was drive the damn thing :p
go search, read, drive, then make the hard decision
SolarFlare665 04-09-2007, 01:04 AM goddamn i'm long winded

mike3770 04-09-2007, 01:07 AM thanks for the info...and swoope I enjoyed the video..lol..
cshakesby 04-09-2007, 01:08 AM solarflare is exactly right. At first i was looking at an impreza wrx sti, i went to look at them, was looking for a used one and i test drove itm but i didnt really find it was me, and i saw a brand new rx-8, test drove that, and just fell in love..with everything..the price, 23,300, the color, red.. everything.
mike3770 04-09-2007, 01:10 AM yeah Ill keep reading and my best bet is just to go and drive a couple different cars to see which one fits me.
cshakesby 04-09-2007, 01:17 AM exactly. Dont make the mistake my dad does. He sees a car he likes in a magazine or somewhere on the street...goes out and buys it..then wants a different one a year or 2 later
swoope 04-09-2007, 01:21 AM thanks for the info...and swoope I enjoyed the video..lol..
but did you learn anything???? :spank:
and really i did spend 6 months learning about the cars before i made a choice... :)
and i am very happy... pm me if you really cant find the info you need... but i will say again you get what you give. we are not your bitch / dont be lazy.

At the top of this forum there is a sticky "How did you first find your RX-8?"
Couple of hundred posts that exactly answer the question you just asked. Better than any additional answers you'll get in this thread.
