View Full Version : What will your NEXT car be?
Imidazole 04-04-2007, 06:55 AM Admit it - We all love our RX-8. But there comes a time, when you're thinking of your next step.
Personally, I'm leaning towards the new V8-powered M3 the 2009 Camaro (SS), or if it's everything everyone has raved about - the latest C6 Z06.
I miss my old 2002 Camaro SS and 1969 GTO too much, the dream is that the new Camaro replaces both as far as the kind of happiness they both gave me.
I love the RX-8, but there is no replacement for displacement. (Even if you gotta sacrifice awesome handling, braking, and body stability lol)
Steakboy42 04-04-2007, 07:04 AM Lotus Exige S
hey, I can dream, right?
actually, I almost have an FD RX-7 in my grasp.
-Steakboy
Rhawb 04-04-2007, 07:08 AM I'd LOVE a Lotus, but it's looking like an 07 WRX at the moment. The 8's lease is up in June and it's looking like I'm going to be moving up north, so keeping the 8 is kind of...not the best choice in the world.

If I saw you in that I'd probably have a heart attack! :)
I'm thinkin that I'll get another RX-8 around 2011
Tirminyl 04-04-2007, 07:17 AM I don't know. Nothing grabs me and I can't afford a 997 GT3, 550, F40, 599 GTB, 430CS, 360CS, Noble M12, Exige S, TVR Sagaris or Alfa Romeo 8C Competizion.

I'm thinking the same thing. :)
Easy_E1 04-04-2007, 07:36 AM Gonna have to get another RX-8 when this one wears out. 2010, 2011 sounds like a good time to get a new one.

But...but...that Cayman has yellow calipers!
Feras 04-04-2007, 08:28 AM for me the cayman is my realistic goal, but i really want a Ford GT.
Coop '04 04-04-2007, 08:32 AM Personally, I'm leaning towards the new V8-powered M3 the 2009 Camaro (SS), or if it's everything everyone has raved about - the latest C6 Z06.

Agree with all of the above, had 3 Z28's 1994, 1999, 2002 Hope to get a new one, hope they actually bring it...
LabDad 04-04-2007, 08:40 AM I think I'll be keeping the 8 for a few more years.
One day I'd like to get a Corvette (Z06 of course) and fly over to Bowling Green and take factory delivery of the car with my son. Together we would then drive to the west coast seeing various sights along the way where I'd have my car shipped over to Hawaii.
BTW. My kids only 13 months old now so it'll be a few years before he's ready for a road trip like this.
NoTears316 04-04-2007, 08:50 AM But...but...that Cayman has yellow calipers!
but the car isn't yellow...
Cayman S or Lotus = realistic
McLaren F1 = not so realistic
Swedishmax 04-04-2007, 09:03 AM i've got a 2004 Rx-8 and i've already dumped about $7000.00 so there would be no point in selling it or ever getting rid of it...i am thinking about picking up a 2006 M3 or maybe the new 2008 M3 V8... the new 350Z looks real nice with the new VQ37 though...it's a tough call.
Landon 04-04-2007, 09:15 AM With the way gas prices are going, I would say a hybrid would be my next purchase.
An RX8 or RX / Rotary anything hybrid would be nice. I am just sold on this damn engine.

toxin440 04-04-2007, 09:37 AM for me it looks like my next ride (sometime in mid-2008) would be either the new BMW ///M3 V8 or the Nissan GT-R.
Looks wise - the GTR has everything I want *AND* all the power in the world to back it up. Pricetag is more expensive though. No point in worrying about it now - I have a year to wait /save and even when both are out I'm going to spend a month or two researching/test driving/thinking.
MadRonin 04-04-2007, 11:17 AM Realistic answer? BMW M3
"Yeah and monkeys might fly out of my butt" answer? Aston Martin V8 Vantage w/Prodrive Performance Kit.
rotaryWizard 04-04-2007, 11:24 AM either get an fd or maybe new rx8 in 2010 if its to my liking, don't really wanna get rid of my current rx8.
rg200amp 04-04-2007, 11:25 AM i am gonna get used 911
Endgame 04-04-2007, 11:32 AM either get an fd or maybe new rx8 in 2010 if its to my liking, don't really wanna get rid of my current rx8.
I think as you do. I plan to keep my 8 unless Mazda graces us with a new RX7! Otherwise, maybe an FD as a rebuild/project car.
playdoh43 04-04-2007, 11:33 AM 335 or m3, i might lease my next car because im starting to realize that i wanna try new cars every few years.
i think the important thing in leasing a car is to only lease a car that you can afford to buy, otherwise you get trapped into leasing a more expensive car than you can afford and end up being a dumb move financially.

snizzle 04-04-2007, 11:34 AM I think he's just asking what your next car will be. You will, in fact, have a NEXT car even if you keep the 8 until the wheels fall off.
stormyblu8 04-04-2007, 11:41 AM Well, my 8 is only 5 weeks old, so it will be a while. By the time I'm ready for a new car we should be living in FLA so it will be a drop top.
My desire is a 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet. Should that prove too much for the pocketbook, then I'll most likely get another 8.
myriadshalaks 04-04-2007, 11:56 AM lotus elise or a 911
6 years from now.
pdxhak 04-04-2007, 12:15 PM For me it will be one of three: Cayman S, 1997 911 Turbo or the Skyline. The goal is to pay off the 8 and make it a dedicated track car and have one of the mentioned cars as a daily driver.
saturn 04-04-2007, 01:04 PM It's weird to see all these people who are taking years to pay off a $30k car talk about buying a $50k+ car next. Do all you folks own houses and all that or are you going with the mantra "you're only young once"?

abbid 04-04-2007, 01:25 PM Some sort of porsche, or a new Camaro, black, on black, on black, on black.. But it will be parked alongside my 8.. not a replacement and it will be in 2010-2011
saturn 04-04-2007, 02:24 PM Well not all of us bought our cars new

RotoRocket 04-04-2007, 02:38 PM Infiniti M35 with AWD.
I am sick of the snow tire bullshit. It gets old really fast.
There is a slim chance I may go with a Honda Accord V6 Coupe if it looks as good as the advance pics, drives tight, and gets the rumored 260 HP V6, though, especiallly if it's 10k+ cheaper than the M35.
pdxhak 04-04-2007, 02:56 PM So some people bought used 8's and are now planning on buying new $50k+ cars? That makes it even worse.
Why is that?
9291150 04-04-2007, 03:02 PM My next car isn't made yet...but it will have to be able to:
1. seat 2 in the back in a reasonably comfortable way
2. feel light / tossable / manageable - without the aid of electronic nannies
3. grip and brake really well, with classic oversteer characteristics...read RWD!
4. have an engine that oozes character with encourages thrashing with enough performance to put a smile on my face
5. be nicely refined and moderately luxurious
6. have a low slung feeling
7. have an attractive interior, with a distinctive yet clean exterior design
...kinda like the 8, just more. Although the new 335i/M3 or G coupe, or the upcoming Camaro or Challenger look interesting (I tried a new 328...not sporty feeling at all), they tend to not be my type of car. Maybe if Lotus or Porsche ever make 4 seat versions of their sportcars...then again I'd rather retire at 50 than piss money away on cars.
stormyblu8 04-04-2007, 03:40 PM It's weird to see all these people who are taking years to pay off a $30k car talk about buying a $50k+ car next. Do all you folks own houses and all that or are you going with the mantra "you're only young once"?
Actually, I won't be taking years to pay off the 8. I already have the money using the equity in our house. We will make one or two payments (good for the credit score!) and then pay it off. The payment on the equity loan is way better than the car payment would be.
I just plan on keeping it for awhile until my wife gets her real estate career going well and I finish my MBA. These are the driving factors for keeping the car a while (plus I'm REALLY loving it!!!!).
playdoh43 04-04-2007, 03:45 PM happy to hear that you have a house, imo its a lot better than someone who dosnt have a house and goes out and buys a 50k+ car.

had my 8 paid off in 22 months... i think it's unrealistic for most of these guys talking about getting a GT-R when the price estimates have ranged all the way up to $80,000. most americans live to have a car payment...when they get that extra cash from not having a payment they just blow it on a newer car...
toxin440 04-04-2007, 04:49 PM It's weird to see all these people who are taking years to pay off a $30k car talk about buying a $50k+ car next. Do all you folks own houses and all that or are you going with the mantra "you're only young once"?
Well thats not me - bought my RX8 in October of 05 (brand new GT), paid off in full 13.5 months later. It helps I have a nice job, no kids, no wife, no money sucking g/f, and most of my expenses are covered under work (living, mileage, food) etc.
Even the RX8 was a LOT LOT of money to me but with careful calculation and consideration I'm seeing that being able to afford and M3 or GT-R would be quiet easy. Due to the fact that I would NEVER just walk in and sign papers saying agree to pay 2000 dollars/month for three years. If I did go and pull the trigger on either of these cars in a year I would put no less then 1/2 down and take a note on the rest, and then subscribe to my thought of putting every damn spare dime to paying the car off within a year. I HATE HATE HATE owing people money so I make sure I pay off my car ASAP.
In Response to swedish Max's comment - I notice the trend that most americans live to have a car note - trade their shit in at a loss just to get the latest and greatest. All the money ive saved by NOT having a note for all this time (and for the remainder of the year/next year) has gone into savings. That savings will partly be used for the new car thing in 1-1.5 years :)

i know just the car... try a Aston Martin vanquish S
pdxhak 04-04-2007, 05:36 PM As the other posters above, I expect to have my car paid off in under 24 months (this time next year). If I did not buy the 8 last year then I'd be targeting the Cayman S or 1997 911 Turbo next year. I'm not loaded but I have outlined what I want and had a plan in motion before purchasing the 8.

N rider89 04-04-2007, 07:23 PM i wont have a new car for a while. i have an FD to work on for the next few years, then ill probably sell the 8 and buy a similar car

My car was purchased 3 months ago and I'll be done paying it off next month. I financed $10,000 of it thru MAC to get the $1,000 rebate and have payed off more than $7,000 of that already. I would have it done by now but I had a few bills to take care of after the holiday season. And yes, I own a house :).
saturn 04-04-2007, 08:50 PM Look how much constrovery I caused!
Brettus 04-04-2007, 08:52 PM one of my rules - never borrow money to buy a car ......
another rule - no car I own should be worth more than 10% of my net worth .
I'm really happy with the 8 & see no point replacing it with a car in the same price range as nothing else is that much better . So its going to have to be a supercar for me next - another couple of yrs off all going well :)
abbid 04-04-2007, 08:52 PM Bought my car at 19 broke as a joke.
still broke as a joke but now have a fantastic job. according the the payments it shouldnt be paid off til late 09..
i plan to pay it off by early 08
then hopefully get into a house by 2010
enforcer 04-05-2007, 02:50 AM I'll keep my 8 thanks and give my Guzzi a birthday present (makeover)....
toxin440 04-05-2007, 07:45 AM hah the 10% net worth rule is pretty funny because if it was followed (or taken seriously by most americans we would be driving around in soapbox derby cars. Most people in this country have no idea of net worth (at least as a positive integer)
Even I have a hard time with that rule and I have quiet a lot of money in savings. The "house" thing people are talking about, while I do know that renting is literally throwing 1000 bucks a month down the tube, a house would be WAY too much space for me. Hell even the 900ish square feet I have in my apartment is a lot of space for me. The fact I have no kids, wife, g/f, pets means I dont need all that space. Renting is fine for me at least for one more year (only been renting sine Jan07)
9291150 04-05-2007, 08:56 AM As a former bank manager, there is nothing wrong with borrowing money, as long as you borrow smart and spend smart. Conventional bankers typically allow people to borrow up to 40% of TDSR (basically all your debts / income), assuming all other criteria checks out. I always thought that was not responsible. My rule of thumb is that your cash flow should function at the 30% total debt to service ratio, which should allow a car and mortgage payment with at least 6% to 12% of your gross income invested in retirement vehicles.
As long as you fit within those parameters, there is no shame in borrowing for a vehicle, in the right situation it can actually make perfect financial sense. Still, I wouldn't spend large on a vehicle without owning real estate or something significant that builds equity.
9291150 04-05-2007, 08:56 AM I'll keep my 8 thanks and give my Guzzi a birthday present (makeover)....
trade it in for a Grisso, now that's one Guzzi makeover!

I'm in a similar boat. I don't need all that space, but everyone says "get a house". So then I get a house, have tons of space, and start filling it with useless furniture. I guess the trick is to get a house and have roommate pay your mortgage for you.
pdxhak 04-05-2007, 09:00 AM Depending on the housing market renting is not a bad option. Where I live though renting is throwing money out the window.
saturn 04-05-2007, 09:01 AM ...with at least 6% to 12% of your gross income invested in retirement vehicles.
Interesting choice of words. I'm going to put 12% of my gross income into a Porsche for my retirement vehicle.
Brettus 04-05-2007, 01:30 PM OK - I accept that you need wheels so initially , while you are young , borrowing to buy a car is fairly essential . Everyone knows that cars lose value quickly however so going for an expensive car early on is one sure fire way to be a slave to the bank for the longest possible time , this also applies to all the other consumer goods that lose 1/2 their value as you walk out of the store.
I borrow a lot of money as part of my business (property investment) but to borrow a lot of money against a depreciating asset like a car goes against what I've learned about money sense .
The other school of thought is "you only live once , and you aren't young forever" so go out and borrow to the hilt for all the stuff you want . Problem with this philosophy is that it is a short term buzz for a long term pain .
A healthy balance is somewhere in between.
The 10% rule - thats just me being conservative . Having a wife & 3 kids to support with no income , in the traditional sense , tends to do that to you :)
So for me to own a $500,000 supercar I want to be worth $5mil minimum & have a passive income to match . How would it look to my wife & kids - me owning a car like that while not being able to afford to give them that type of lifestyle also ?
snizzle 04-05-2007, 01:39 PM How would it look to my wife & kids - me owning a car like that while not being able to afford to give them that type of lifestyle also ?
It would set them in their place, yes sir it would.

Hornet 04-05-2007, 11:16 PM I'm not really sure what my next car will be! I intend to keep the 8 and put something along side it! The vehicles that I've considered are
Evo 8 (Used)
Evo 9 (Used)
Evo X (New)
GTO (Used)
Camaro (New)
BMW X5 (Used)
AMG ML55 (of course used)
The reason for the SUVs is I'm kind of interested in the utility of one but I'd like one with at least a little get up and go!

SlowLude 04-06-2007, 03:05 AM My next car is going to be a familymobile. I'm looking at a CX-7 in 3 years time but don't want 2 Mazdas. Maybe a used X5 or Acura TL? God those TLs are comfy! But too bad its FWD. Perhaps an RL or M45 or Lexus GS? I'd be nice to have luxury cruiser for long trips. The 8 will stay for another 10 years probably.
Swedishmax 04-06-2007, 06:02 AM well if you're going that route get a Koenigsegg CCX....the best supercar on the market. And...it's Swedish.

Fanman 04-06-2007, 08:55 AM Not sure yet. Have some money coming in.
If I decide for a reasonable car : BMW 335i w/ Procede chip & exhaust or M3 coupe
If I decide to splurge : 2006 BMW M5, or 2003/4 911 Turbo or upcoming Maserati Gran Turismo.
WarmFreedom 04-06-2007, 09:02 AM by next car, i mean a 'pride n joy' car. and i think thats the direction of this thread.
from now till then, id probly be getting some practical daily driver car. but its not the 'next car' as in this context.
Mendossa 04-06-2007, 09:33 AM Slightly used Cayman S or latest 911 (n/a) if I can find a good deal :)
User24 04-08-2007, 08:38 PM With 4-6 thousand miles a year, there's no reason for me to look forward to another car. All I need is a motorcycle to spread out the wear.
BTW, stop complaining about people looking at their next car as an expensive exotic. Open your eyes, there is nothing out there other than exotics to upgrade to, to get everything our RX8 is and then some.
StewC625 04-09-2007, 09:24 AM 2008 Mercedes-Benz C350 Sport, in Silver with Grey leather. :)
jeffe19007 04-09-2007, 09:17 PM At this point, a Cayman. It will stretch my budget, but it better be worth it.
That is until something better comes along.
I am sure the Porsche Club guys are snobs though, and don't own wrenches.

Hey, I'm still a PCA member :). I don't know about your area but our regional PCA club is pretty cool. They like cars in general and a few of them are hard core wrenchers and/or autocrossers. Even the ones who don't wrench or race are nice.

Detrich 04-10-2007, 03:09 AM scenario 1: replace my 8 with the next gen rotary- be it the rx-9 or the next gen rx-7.
