View Full Version : Does the 8 dimple easily?
M-ster 09-20-2003, 05:12 AM M just wondering, does the 8 gets dimple easily? Those where some car pulls beside yours and opens their door as if there aren't any car besides theirs. Bang! Dimple!
A lot of Japanese make model I know of as compared to the Continental's make, some how or rather, the body works seem to be lighter and thinner. Thus they don't stand very well to the slightest knock.
mikeb 09-20-2003, 05:21 AM dont know yet
thank god I have no dimples or DENTS
vibec 09-20-2003, 05:56 AM Being a MX5 owner currently, Mazdas are really prone to ding, dimples, dents etc.!!!!
you have to be super careful
on the MX5 if you close the lid by pressing with your thumb too much- you would leave an indentation.
Its to do with the fact that mazda try to get their cars to weigh as little as possible= really thin sheet metal
I guess you dont take it shopping...
BillK 09-20-2003, 10:08 AM All cars are like that today.
More than one person has left a dent in the front hood of their Porsche Boxster or 911 by closing it incorrectly...

Use to have the Miata too, it gets very big dimples. If only those are on some cute chicks' faces. My guess are they are normally created by trucks and SUVs drivers/passengers, as the Miata sits pretty low and these guys, they can't quite judge how much they can swing their doors, and thus the consequences. Sigh...
IWANTMYRX8 09-20-2003, 04:53 PM too bad mazda cant use those lightweight panels like saturn does. you can hit it w/a baseball bat and it pops right back out..gotta love it...I'll miss my saturn...lol
NOT!!! :D

UFGatorx8 09-20-2003, 06:54 PM Got my first dimple today and it's almost impossaiable to see unless you put your head to my car door and look down the side. I noticed it in a heart beat but thats just me. My friend tried to look for it and couldent see it. But I'll be getting it removed within the week. I was so upset you have no idea. But I also realize its going to happen but not when it's only a month old. And well we all would like for it to never happen.
So with that said anyone know of any good way's of removing them? I have a friend who has the "Pop a dent" kit how well do those things work?
You should be able to pop it out as long as it is not in a crease. a plunger will even work :)
It sucks, but it always seems like these things happen when you first get the car. My last car got hit pretty bad in a parking lot a month after I had it, bent in the front bumper I fixed it but it wasn't lined up as good. Now my 8 got a large paint chip a month in.
Maybe this will be the ONLY ding ?? My last car survived after that initial hickup, but there was a few door dings, but VERY minor and few.
mikeb 09-20-2003, 08:56 PM I gonna be honest
I've heard bad things about that pop a dent thing
I wouldnt reccommend it
RotorGeek 09-20-2003, 09:49 PM My wifes Miata has a few dings. I think they are from SUVs the dings are high on the doors ans rear fenders
Sux how little people care about other peoples rides

I've got friends who swear by it. I've never try this paintless dent removal before, I thought it's pretty neat, and probably cheaper then having them knock and respray in the garage.
With my new baby, if I ever were to get any dimple (keeping my fingers crossed that wouldn't happen) these guys would probably be my first choice.
Here's (http://www.pdr.com.sg/) something we have locally.
mikeb 09-21-2003, 01:40 AM that looks like a better option
XDEEDUBBX 09-21-2003, 01:49 AM some lil kid threw a rock at my car as i was driving by..(btw i have a 03 mx5) it was a lil rock and it left my car with a big ass dimple... and the body was pretty much perfect besides that *sigh*
mikeb 09-21-2003, 01:56 AM that sucks
someone threw a golf ball at my last car when I was on the freeway once, thank god they missed
MikeLMR 09-21-2003, 05:13 AM The Miata's dent easilly as a lot of the non structural panels are aluminium ... the bonnet being one of them.
Not sure about the RX8 but I'm sure some panels will be aluminium to save weight.
Mike
RodsterinFL 09-21-2003, 07:36 AM Don't think it is any worse than other cars - new ones that is. Mercedes use to have one of the thickest sheet metals out there and even they have thinner stuff now. I don't think manufacturers are too concerned about this since it has little to do with build quality as far as THEY are concerned.
Aluminum components are VERY touchy. On our cars that is the hood and I believe at least part of the rear doors. ALWAYS LET THE HOOD JUST DROP DOWN when closing.
Squidward 09-21-2003, 03:49 PM listen to this... this is wierd.
I got back to my car hoping that nobody has dent it (like always), and I saw cigarette ash scattered all over the hood of my car, as if somebody dumped their ashtray on my hood... WTF??!???
Wierd.. Cuz all I did was take a deep breath and blew it all off and it was clean.
BUT WTF... whats WRONG with people nowadays.. I f*cken HATE going to The Block at Orange.. They got the worst type of people there..

I got that at a hotel yesterday- the car was parked just outside our room between 11am and 9am, and some freak stood over it smoking or something. It was ALL over my hood. It just blew off, but still...
starbucks 09-21-2003, 05:58 PM After reading a few of your posts, I'm wondering if I should just stick with my old Accord...j/k.
But still...a golf ball (mikeb)...kid/rock...and ashes on the hood? What the heck. Were you guys doing something to attract that stuff, such as racing or taking two parking spaces (hate people who do that myself!)?...or are there so many people who are so small that they do bad things to nice cars?
mikeb 09-21-2003, 06:14 PM the golf ball was thrown at my last car not the 8
The block in orange --forget it
Please get their cars keyed and stolen their alot
grogiefrog 09-21-2003, 06:34 PM I recently stopped at a new Starbucks (in a bad part of town) with my wife's 2000 Accord. I was in there for about 10 minutes. Afterwards I noticed that the front bumber had 43 key scratches. What is up with that? Luckily my wife's dad owns a body shop and repainted the bumber for me. The RX-8 is on my list for my next new car, but boy am I going to worry about it when it's not in my garage!
grogiefrog 09-21-2003, 06:47 PM I was at a classic car show recently, and a friend of my father-in-laws was showing a '69 Charger R/T that he had just had repainted. Parked next to him was this ugly baby blue (that needed to be repainted) 70's Camero (why he was showing this car I'm not sure... at least repaint it!).
I was looking at the side of the Charger, and noticed a dimple in it's side and mentioned it. It lined right up with the passenger door on the Camero. The guy's punk kid was responsible for it. The kid just blamed his dad for parking too close.
h0rde 09-22-2003, 12:40 AM my 99 prelude got dented to hell by hail a while ago and i got it fixed at cindy rowe before i sold it to get my 8. they did a fantastic job, all paintless dent removal and they took out 93 dents from almost every panel on it. it looked brand new afterwards.
XUrotaryrocket 09-22-2003, 08:20 AM I was sitting in the Clermont County courthouse parking lot the other day. I was driving my RX-7 which is not in perfect shape, but overall its great. And, it's my baby.... !!! Some jackhole parks next to me and slams his door into my passenger side mirror........ WHILE I AM SITTING IN THE F@CKING CAR !!!!!!!!!! Then, he can't understand why I roll down my window and mouth off to him.
Meanwhile, on the driver side, I am being extra careful not to hit an old piece of sh@t chevy truck with the side caved in. I just don't comprehend people and their lack of concern for others.
desmo996 09-22-2003, 08:28 AM I was driving my wife's 300M from dinner two years ago. The car was about a week old. We were getting off the HW when we heard a loud bang on the passenger side. I blew it off and told my wife me must have hit a rock, but I suspected something else had hit us. I inspected the car when we got home and found a BB gun hole on the side of the car (Rear passenger side). I told my wife to call the police.
Against my wife's objections, I took my car and drove around the neighborhood close to the off-ramp. Drove around for a while without any luck. As I approached the last Cull-de-Sac, I saw the outline two boys and a BB gun leaning against the 6-foot chain link fence. I jumped out of the car while still rolling, jumped over the fence, grabbed the BB gun, and pushed one of the kids against the fence. The other kid took off so fast that his shoes were left where he was standing. I told the other kid that if his friend did not stop running, I would beat the crap out of him. "Josh, stop running, please" he cried almost in tears.
The two boys were about 14-16 years old. Strangely enough they were taller than me and I'm 5'11''. I had them face down on the grass. The show "COPS" has nothing on me. I called my wife and she said she would be on her way with the cops when they arrived. I was giving the kids a sermon on how dangerous their little stunt was when I noticed that they were itching and scratching because of the grass. I told them to sit up. I was so mad that I told them that "You messed with the wrong Colombian".
"You're Colombian?" one of the kids replied.
"Yes, why?" I asked.
" I heard you guys are dangerous, please don't kill us."
LOL
I sent one of the kids to get their parents, while I held the other one "hostage". Needless to say the parents were very upset. My wife arrived with the cops 45 minutes later. Per the mother's request, she had the kids handcuffed and placed on the back of the unit to give the kids a good scare. They were crying and scared sh*tless. I felt bad for them. We worked out the repair issues. I wasn't going to press any charges. The kids were very apologetic and I told them: "Hey, next time don't get caught." They apologized to my wife also, but she finally got mad when they called her "Ma'am". LOL

These guys normally will never understand what point we're trying to make here, they couldn't care less, and they'll wouldn't be bothered to join forum like these, that's why they'll never understand.
Fab 8 09-22-2003, 08:52 AM Very upset! Just discovered my first ding, between the rear door and rear wheel arch!   Bastards!
Chuck Clifford 09-22-2003, 09:01 AM My RX-8 got dented a month after I got it. I caught the guy who did it. It did not crease, so I looked up paintless dent removal (PDR) places in town. I did not want to paint my whole back door, so I went with a recommended PDR guy, it cost 60 bucks, and he did a great job, can't notice where it was. Definately recommend trying it first, before the paint job.

They got arrested for assault on a minor and felony menacing. (Yes, threatening to "beat the crap out of someone" is enough to earn you a trip to jail; actually touching a kid is a guarantee...)

I'm surprised he didn't give the stock answer these people usually do (that of course infuriates me):You're just going to have to learn that door dings happen. Get over it.

Well, they were lucky that we did not have a baby two years ago. Three inches higher and they would have hit the glass where she sits. They kill my baby, I go after them, no trials, no retrials, no appeals, no matter what age they are. I had to wait over an hour for the cops to show up. They were probably giving someone a speeding ticket  . I was not the first or last car they hit.

M-ster 09-22-2003, 01:39 PM Why car companies don't make the car's body finish like the Lotus Elise. The Elise's body are made with some sort of plastic (not sure of the technical name) using mold injection technology. These plastic panel would be dent-free. The most you'll get is paint chip, but the body works would bounces back if something were to knock slightly on them.
The advanteage would probably be even more weight saving. What would be the disadvantage of using these process? Any thoughts?

Ray Barone (Everybody loves raymond), says cars should be made out of NERF, but a gust of wind will take your car away.:)
cruzdreamer 09-22-2003, 03:20 PM Get this.... my husband parks next to me in the garage...he put 4 dings on the door from opening his door to his SUV. Then I got a couple more...total 6 small dings in one door......had them fixed for $200....then two days later got another ding.....not my hubby....read him the riot act after his 4....he denied...but I caught him in the act!!! He says it's only a car!!! Yikes....how can you feel that way about such beautiful pieces of amchinery that take you everywhere you can imagine?? Well...some cars are beautiful.....like the RX 8, G35,350Z,T-bird(new and the 56-57 birds),Vette's, Aston Martins(Vanquish)...to name a few! Oh...yes the Mazda's get dings easily and liitle chips from rocks....got lots of those too!
grogiefrog 09-22-2003, 05:24 PM Those punk kids deserved it... What a story! Nice job! All I can say is don't feel sorry, you saved someone else's car down the line... well hopefully!
Recently, my wife's car got her front bumper keyed 43 times. We stopped in a bad part of town at a Starbucks. I called the police just to report it... hoping at least that someone else does. Maybe if enough people bother to get involved then they might find the punk. I'm sure that I'm not the first, and you probably weren't the only one that got shot at.
Luckily my wife's dad owns a body shop and repainted it for free. Although it was a 17 hour drive to his shop.
