View Full Version : crashed my rx8
vrwankel 03-17-2007, 03:10 PM I am so Pissed I crashed my 8 on my way back from a party. Some asshole on a crotch rocket wanted to race me on a road that curves and has a merge in the middle. I was goin about 50 when the guy on the bike over took me in the merge lane, he didn’t notice the car a head of him and slammed on the brakes, I was forced to go off the road. The problem with that is that I went on to an elevated median. It pulled me off the road, hit a couple of bushes and ended up going front first into a palm tree. Thank god I didn’t hit him he would have been dead and it would have been my fault. Crashing into the palm tree I completely totaled my 8 and broke my foot. At least I didn’t get charged with anything from the cops the guy on the bike got away scot free!
If insurance comes out ok Ill probably get another 8 but not sure whether to get an 04 again or a 05, or ,06
Any body here crashed there 8 help me out here.. tell me your story if not give me some advice make me feel better. God I loved that car

reddevilwarrior 03-17-2007, 03:15 PM Damnnn, R.I.P!
At least you are fine!
Good to hear that.
New Yorker 03-17-2007, 03:53 PM So sorry to hear it—glad you weren't more seriously injured. As horrible as it seems right now, the worst is behind you.

RazzyBRX-8 03-17-2007, 04:00 PM Wait, wait, wait...you were racing a motorcycle?
Did no one catch that?
Sorry about the wreck.
Mugatu 03-17-2007, 04:06 PM and this is why this site doesn't condone street racing.
so much for takin' them in the twisties, huh?
Raptor2k 03-17-2007, 04:08 PM Sucks dude. Hope you get a new 8. Did the airbags come out?
Shinka-Dono 03-17-2007, 05:51 PM Well, he didn't say he was racing, he just said the motorcycle wanted to race.
In any case that sucks ass and its good you were not severely injured.
^It looks like the passenger side bag deployed.
myriadshalaks 03-17-2007, 06:03 PM too bad you didn't just hit the brakes, you probably would have been able to stop. i mean, if you were only going 50, the 8 would brake as fast or faster than most bikes, i would think. And if you bumped him, you would have been going pretty slow. anyway, glad you're okay. maybe you'll learn a lesson.
NoTears316 03-17-2007, 06:16 PM Good job
DarkBrew 03-17-2007, 06:20 PM That sucks.
I know how attached you can get to these cars.
Two years on the forum and only one post??
Now that you're less mobile you can increase your post count.
Razz1 03-17-2007, 06:21 PM Sorry to hear about that. However you have one of the best brakes in the world.
I bet if yoou hit the brakes and kept your path, you would have missed the bike. The bike would have hit his brakes just hard enough to swerve before he accellerated .
Take a HDPE course.
Do you think Nascar drivers turn the whell to avoid an accident? Not in most cases.
By the time you reach the point of cantact the vehicle ahead of you has moved on to path it was taking leaving the point of impact asan empty space.
Aero8 03-17-2007, 08:18 PM sorry about your car, and if I were in that situation, I probably would have swerved too. I'd rather get f'd up than take the risk of hitting someone on a bike. even if you tap them lightly there's no telling how experienced they are and what they would do. if they reacted wrong even to a light bump or you caught them on an angle it could have been him in that tree.
i think you made thr right decision and I hope you get another 8
Please be careful. It could have been much worse: http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=111673
lesper4 03-17-2007, 09:21 PM street racing :icon_no2:
at least you are alive, i dont think you should get another rx8 or a rotary for that matter.
CarAndDriver 03-17-2007, 11:49 PM Be careful....learn your lesson and don't kill anyone.
You should drive something more along the lines of a Mazda 5.
Sounds to me like the bike just wanted to merge and you were being stupid thinking you could keep up with it or didn't like that he was going around you... Sorry, no pity from me, I hope you learned your lesson.

I'm really confused. He was passing..he had to slam the brakes..and you went off road..why?
If he slammed the brakes, and you just kept going on your way, wouldn't he have just gone behind you?
And if he had hit you, how would it have been your fault? He was trying to overtake you. That's his false judgment, not yours...
nycgps 03-18-2007, 06:52 AM ^^ I know right. ITs not always your fault.
Redpit10 03-18-2007, 08:21 AM too bad you didn't just hit the brakes, you probably would have been able to stop. i mean, if you were only going 50, the 8 would brake as fast or faster than most bikes, i would think. My Bike (CBR F4i) stops on a dime. Hands down bikes stop and go faster than anything on the road; they're just so light. Sorry about your accident, but if a crash was inevitable you did the right thing. Usually you should stay straight, but imagine what you would of done if you hit him(i mean your car is seriously messed up). At least nobody got seriously hurt. Looking at your car, Id say a broken foot is pretty lucky to be the only injury. Wish you a speedy recovery, and drive safe.
NotAPreppie 03-18-2007, 09:55 AM A bike's brake-power-to-weight-ratio is typically worlds better than almost any car out there just as any car's brake-power-to-weight-ratio is worlds better than almost any semi-truck out there.
Based on your story, you probably did the right thing.
jocampo 03-18-2007, 10:04 AM Drive safe and forget the car... you're more important than a pice of steel...besides, insurance company should pay and you will be able to buy a new one...same model or a better car. Think on buy a Mazdaspee6 turbo AWD (i got one). I think is as safe as your RX8 and not so thirsty with gas...
:-)
H1000 03-18-2007, 10:31 AM Judging by his posted statement, he was going to fast with another vehicle and following to close for the road conditions. He was Racing! He was unable to slow down due to his speed and close proximately to the motorcycle, lost control and crashed.
Reckless Operation, Speeding, Failure to Control and Assured Clear Distance should have been the minimum charges you should have received from the Police. I'm sure you provided the Police with a different version of the story. Your actions could have taken your life or another individuals. Glad all were unharmed.
cbr600rx7 03-18-2007, 11:05 AM On a bike even a light tap can be a big deal. You did the wright thing by trying to avoid them. Sorry for your loss.
GeTcRuNk 03-18-2007, 11:43 AM the man doesn't need to hear criticism like that...who knows what would have been the right thing to do...even if he did something wrong...he paid for it by crashing the 8 but lucky enough to have nothing happen to him...thank god...hope you get a new 8 and be extra cautious with it this time...
cbr600rx7 03-18-2007, 01:47 PM We all learn from are mistakes :squint: . I learned the hard way to take it to the track. It coasted me my license for six months 2500 bucks and 60days. Shortly after I became involved with the SCCA and VIR and i have learned alot since then. I can say I have been lucky a few times in the past and I have had friends not so lucky. One lost his life on a bike at 20 when he was hit and sent over the rail :icon_no2: . I can say that at least you and he where not hurt and you will take something from this. And I hope you get another 8 and can enjoy this excellent machine in Mazda’s finest  . Next time take it to the track 10 bucks for a night at the drag strip is a lot cheaper than a few hundred dollar speeding ticket any way :fingersx: .
For Six 03-18-2007, 03:29 PM Even if the car is like that the important thing that no one got hurt or killed....except for that palm tree. I hope that you get another 8 and this incident doesnt make you afraid to drive. Good luck on getting a new car.
I'm not sure I understand exactly what happened. Were you trying to stop him from getting in front of you?
saturn 03-19-2007, 09:08 AM If you were going fast enough to kill the dude on the bike if you had tried to stop you would have clearly slammed into the car 6 feet in front of the bike had the bike not been in the picture. From the limited info you're giving seems like you were going way too fast.
Trekk 03-19-2007, 09:41 AM Seems like 90% of the crashes posted on the forums are front end impacts.
It seems to me you know that road well, why didnt you slow to let him pass. Honestly have both you and the biker never driven down that road? Normally the cars dont notice the bikes on the road, the other way around sounds odd, unless he was looking over at you for some reason.
Miker 03-19-2007, 10:02 AM Your front end looks like it hit Ron Jeremy right in the crotch.
Shinka-Dono 03-19-2007, 10:47 AM Good job
Yes, it is rather praiseworthy tha... oh, wait, you don't mean it that way.
CarAndDriver 03-19-2007, 11:24 AM No other posts. Guilty as charged!
Well, I think that you did the right thing by going off-road. It's a painful lesson to have learned, but as you point out it could have been much, much worse. So, you totalled a car and freaked out a tree. Who cares about the car. They are always replaceable. The lesson here is to remember that when you drive you always drive within the limits of your car. If you are racing a bike then you have to remember that the bike can both out accelerate you and out brake you, and if well driven, it can also out turn you. The biker did a stupid thing too. He braked harder than the person behind him could possibly have braked to keep up. It sounds like you recognize your responsibility in this accident and hopefully won't do it again, but accidents are accidents. Often they are just unavoidable circumstances.
The worste accident I never had was a when I was in college. I was on my way back from a date to the hardware store with a girl that I ended up dating for five years. We were having a great time, and I was driving the speed limit. The road was a two lane, one way road, and I was in the left lane. There was a truck in the right lane a nose ahead of me, and a toyota in the right lane two car lengths ahead of him. That Toyota turned without signalling and with no warning hard left directly in front on me. She then realized what she had done, slammed on the brakes to a dead stop in front of me, turned, and screamed. I could see all of her teeth. I was going forty (speed limit). I was heading right for her driver's door with a two ton mercedes. I couldn't turn to the left lane because the bread truck was right in the way so I went left. I jumped an 8 inch curb just barely missing a telephone pole, I counted to one to make sure that I missed her, and I turned to the right avoiding a fire hydrant. I gotten around her, and started to be relieved, when I was horrified to find that the bread truck was now right in my path. He had been forced to drive around her stern because there was just no room to stop, and he was now right in my path. I turned left hard and straightened the car out. I coasted it to the side of the road, threw it in park and fell out of the car onto the road because I was too weak kneed to stand. I thought that I wanted to puke. That accident was virtually unavoidable. I had to go off the road or hit her. The brakes would never have stopped the car.
In the last accident that I had which was a month after I bought the 8. A guy three cars in front of me on a very crowded four lane fast moving highway got cut off. The cars in front of me braked hard. I knew that the car behind me was a fat lumbering JEEP Grand Cherokee because I was aware of my environment. I had over three car lengths between me and the girl in front of me because I wanted plenty of room to stop in case something like this did happen. The guy behind me was too close to stop that fat car and I could easily out brake him. So, I hit the brakes hard to show him that I was serious about stopping. I then let up a bit to give him a chance to stop. He didn't take the hint and brake hard. I gave him all the room that I could braking firmly and donating the three lengths in front of me until I needed to just stop. I put the brakes down. The ABS engaged, and the 8 stopped on a dime leaving several feet between me and the girl in front of me. The moron clipped my right rear bumper because he had to maneuver around me instead of just stopping. He's lucky that he didn't hit someone else. It turned out when we pulled over that he was a completely stoned college boy.
It's a dangerous world out there and accidents happen and sometimes you can't avoid them, but you should always drive thinking about how you can control the environment so you don't get hurt because nobody else out there is going to protect you.
In your case, you should have been looking beyond the bike to see what was in front of him. When on the highway, I always watch the brake lights several cars ahead to try to get warning as to traffic conditions and emergency braking. Never rely on a bike. They maneuver like demons. Best of luck and do get another 8. They're great cars, and it looks like it protected you pretty well in the accident. Best of luck.
MazdaMonkey 03-19-2007, 12:35 PM Sucks dude. Hope you get a new 8. Did the airbags come out?
I hope they did, did you see the pic of how messed up his front end is! I am glad you made it out of that one with only a broken foot

You must have been doing something right to stay with her for 5 years with taking her to the hardware store for a date! :Eyecrazy:
