How can I meter/gauge fuel consumption, realtime?

I'm sure you've seen those older cars with a gauge... that shows you realtime how much fuel is being dumped into their engines. You floor it and the needle skyrockets.

I'd love to be able to show realtime how much fuel my 8 is consuming. I feel it would help me understand much better what rpm ranges, gears, etc to drive in - to optimize my fuel economy... when I feel like it. (And maybe to make me cry when I'm doing the oposite!)

Is this data readily available through the OBDII? Is there a simple way of gathering it, and displaying it realtime?

Or is there another sensor that I would have to install, perhaps somewhere on the fuel line, to be able to meter it?

Thanks!

ScanguageII will work with the least hassle (unless you have a carputer)

... i've also posted a table of fuel consumption for load vs rpms a long time ago

I think to be as accurate as possible you'd need two flowmeters, one in the fuel line and another in the return. Take the difference of the two and you have real time fuel consumption. This would be very expensive and probably more accurate than you're looking for.

+1 for scangauge II. Works great, built in LCD screen, and takes power from obd2 port, so only one wire to connect/setup.

i am using scangauge but, whats the reason to look for a very accurate mpg gauge if you have an rx8 ? only if you know the average consumption is enough.
