View Full Version : History on the zoom zoom song.... :)
RodimusOne 09-17-2003, 07:08 PM Nothing much, just wanted to share some light-hearted information....
The "zoom zoom" song Mazda is actually a capoeira song. For those of you who have no idea what capoeira is, it's a Brazillian martial art that practitioners "play" or "mock fight" while performing a bunch of gymnastic/breakdancing-looking fighting moves to the tune of singing and intrumental sound in the background. Songs and instruments are traditional Brazilian/African heritage.
The song was then modifed to include a more techno-beat in a capoeira movie called "Only The Strong" filmed in the mid-90s starring Mark Dacascos.
The zoom zoom song we are hearing on tv is actually a modified variation from the movie. I have the song in mp3 format if anyone wants it - you'll be surprised at how similar it is (99%)
Also, Mazda kinda cut off after "zoom zoom zoom..."
The entire catch line/phrase actually reads:
"zoom zoom zoom capoeira mata um...."
which literally translates from Brazilian portuguese to:
"zoom zoom zoom capoeira kills one...." and so forth
Makes you think twice now when you see some kid singing to that tune on tv no? :)
mikeb 09-17-2003, 07:14 PM crazy
how do you know that
RodimusOne 09-17-2003, 07:19 PM Been doing capoeira off and on for the past 5 years...
Watched "Only The Strong" a few times...
Own "Only The Strong" soundtrack...
Was rather shocked when the commercial first came out. It was cool, but shocked at the same time. Since capoeira is a pretty obscure martial art (that is more "showy" than functional), I figured Mazda just decided to use the song because it's catchy.
I can send you the mp3 file if you're interested
mikeb 09-17-2003, 07:20 PM cool
I'd like to hear it
Mockngbrd 09-17-2003, 08:16 PM wow.... capoeira's cool.... :P
i got the MP3 of the full song too..... just never understood what it meant
red_rx8_red_int 09-17-2003, 08:30 PM I thought it came from "Zenon, girl of the 21st century" or something like that. I have a young daughter and have watched that movie with her several times. There's a song with the lyrics "zoom zoom zoom make your heart go boom boom boom". Or similar. The movie predates the commercials, and poped right into my mind the first time I heard Mazda's zoom zoom zoom.

Try lookin for the song under some file P2P client (kazaa, etc.). Try "zoom zoom capoeira" or "only the strong" or something along that line. The song should show up.
Even the singer's voice in the mazda commercial is the same, and plus all the background instruments in the commercial (except for the techno beat) are traditional capoeira/brazilian instruments (berimbau, etc.).
The original capoeira song actually translates to:
"zoom zoom zoom capoeira kills one
kills two, kills three
if all of you attack me at once
i wlll kill of all of you"
or something along that line....
Cheery, eh?

aussie77 09-18-2003, 05:24 AM Capoeira is functional, it just looks showy. It was developed by the slaves who used to have their hands chained together. Hence all of the kicking but not much in the way of hand strikes. But, to hide from their 'masters' that they were standing around practicing fighting, they performed it to music and made it appear like a dance. It is a hard-as-crap martial art to learn because you have to have rhythm to be any good at it, and it is almost like gymnastics, some of the moves you have to pull off.
j1mb0x99 09-18-2003, 08:12 AM I bet Mazda knew about the lyrics when they started using this song. Only instead of ....
"zoom zoom zoom capoeira kills one
kills two, kills three
if all of you attack me at once
i wlll kill of all of you"
they sung it as.....
"zoom zoom zoom Mazda kills Honda
kills Nissan, kills Subaru
if all of you attack me at once
i wlll kill of all of you"
See... the people at Mazda are some tricky bastards. Mocking all their competition and they don't even know it. :p

I always thought that schoolkid was kinda creepy; now I know why. I think I will nickname him "Damien." Thanks for the info; this is a very cool story. Another way to hear more of the song is call the Mazda customer service helpline and get on hold. They play a more complete version of the song while you're on hold.

h0rde 09-21-2003, 11:13 PM i don't think i could hear it again since i had to listen to it repeated constantly for about 30 minutes while on hold with mazda. ugh.

What I meant by "more showy than functional" is that, i would say, most of the capoeiristas today are 'playing' for leisure/entertainment/health reasons. I personally have not seen anyone using 100% capoeira (ginga, au, parafuso, etc.) for fighting out-and-out, except for in the movies. What I have seen though are fights that break out from playing capoeira with strangers etc.
Besides, if you are to really use capoeira to fight - you have to be really darn good at it (try 20 yrs +). To be a good showy capoeirista, now that's a different story (really depends on how athletic or how well you move to the 'rhythm').
A lot of us practice capoeira just to jogo, nothing more.
Also, for those of you who are still searching for the song - I tried Kazaa out and it worked. Search under "Only the strong" and you will find it....
