*sigh*

When you ask me that kind of question I just show my true nature. My main rig is this:

Sony 21" and Viewsonic 19" monitors (both do 1600x1200 at 75 Khz or above)
Intel PERLC MB that includes USB2, IEEE1394, 1Gb LAN using CSA (no CPU usage for networking), 5.1 audio with SPDIF output and RAIDed SATA controllers
Intel 3Ghz 800Mhz FSB CPU with HT
2GB PC3200 DDR RAM
Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Adaptec 39160 Dual channel SCSI controller
Sound Blaster Live

Storage is provided by:
1 9GB SCSI
1 36GB SCSI
1 45GB IDE
3 80GB IDE
and one 180GB in a external USB2/IEEE1394 case.
Also have a 48X Lite-On CD-RW and a 4X DVD-RW

I also have another 3 computers at home I use as well as a rig I took to my Fiance's since her 600Mhz celeron was killing me. Thats my Lanparty rig so it isnt as high end. 2.4Ghz P4 with 512MB, Ti4600 128MB and a 45GB drive, but it's all in one of those tiny cases. Got the case form Alienware since I know most of the guys there.

I use AMD's for people that wanna build cheap. However since the stuff I work with normally needs me to take work home I cant be bothered to dick around with the AMD's to get them working with a lot of this stuff. Thats why the Intel MB. ANYTHING runs on it. And when yer testing some of these video editing cards it's very usefull. Anytime the boards cost goes over 5G the AMD systems start to flake out on me.

I also dream one day of doing 3D work again on a professional level, but the longer it takes me to play with Lightwave/Maya/Softimage, the longer it's gonna take to get back into the groove of things. Anyway, thats another reason I have a large rig at home. The other machines I was talking about are 1 in my bedroom for anything up there (movie playback, music, ocasional gaming and browsing), a modified I-opener as my couch browser (very limited machine but enough for web browsing) and a 1Ghz P3 is my arcade cabinet CPU (yes, I'm an emulation freak as well and I hand made my own arcade cabinet for MAME)

Forgot to mention, if yer daddy can beat up my daddy, tell him to get to it. That ******* ******* *** ******** deserves to be beat.

25% oc, nice job Turbo.

Whether it's cars or computers getting more power than stock makes for an addicting (and sometimes expensive) hobby...

I agree highspeed8. I ahd heard about overclooking and first thing I did was look for a way to "turn up the boost" on the ole AMD. It was actually quite simple. All I had to do was go into my BIOS and turn up the multipliers. The only problem is a little extra heat and if I leave the system on for days at a time it will sometimes lock up, but everything is cool after it's restarted. I've also heard I could get into the 1G range by using a lead pencil to connect certain pins together....I'm not going that far!

Mine *are* rather ancient by comparison:

Work:
Apple Power Macintosh G4 350MHz (overclocked to 400 ;) ), maxed out at 1024MB RAM, 40GB hard drive, two ATI Rage something or others driving two CTX 17" 1280x1024 LCD panels, CD-RW, running Mac OS X v10.2.6. Attached is an XMPCR satellite radio receiver (gotta have my tunes at work!)

(I also have a crappy old P-III notebook not worth mentioning)

Home machine #1:
Apple iMac G4 15" 1024x768 LCD 700MHz, 640MB RAM, 30GB hard drive, CD-RW, running Mac OS X v10.2.6

Home machine #2:
HP Pavilion 505n 2.2GHz P4 Celeron, 768MB RAM, 60GB hard drive, CD-RW, Intel Extreme Graphics driving a Planar 15" 1024x768 LCD panel.

Main home machine - robust for its day but still plays new games (Doom III and Half-life II will be the killers)

- 19" hitachi superscan elite 751 ($25 used)
- 1Ghz AMD T-Bird CPU
- Asus A7V 200mhz fsb mobo
- enlight case w/300W p/s
- 30GB WDD Caviar 7200rpm
- 512mb ecc PC133 stick from crucial.com
- Raedon 8500 64mb
- guillemot digital-out-enabled sound card
- everyday 3c509x NIC
- everyday 52x read + 40x/12x/48x sony CDroms

The air-cooling nerd in me:
- 1 custom side-mounted sunon 120mm 142CFM intake fan w/grill & filter
- 1 80mm sunon front intake fan
- 1 80mm sunon rear exhaust fan
- 1 Taisol CPU fan + heatsink (forget the model)
- 1 5.25" HDD cooling kit, complete w/huge heatsink and 2 smallish fans
- 1 PCI slot exhaust fan directly under Raedon
- 1 small fan on heatsink of Radeon
- 1 factory fan on power supply
----------------------------------------
= 9 fans probably moving around 200CFM. No vents to guide air nor round IDE cables though (but tied cables!) :)

Intel 8088 at 8MHz (overclocked from 4.77MHz!)
640Kb RAM (Bill Gates says nobody will ever need more)
360KB Floppy Drive
20MB RLL HD
Hercules graphics card - maybe 640x480
14" greenscreen monitor - 4 shades of green
IBM Keyboard, no mouse
Running MS-DOS 3.1 and much later Windows 1.0 (GEM was far better)

That's the first machine I ever built (around 1985)...
I can't believe I persuaded my parents to spend over $3000 on this for my 'education' (I mostly used it to play Rogue and Spacewar and write games in BASIC and Assembler).

Prior to that in the 1970's I had a Commodore VIC20 with 3.5KB of RAM and a very expensive cassette drive - you haven't lived until you've written a Space Invader clone (sounds, colours and wriggling antennae) in machine code to fit into 3072 bytes of memory.

I never get the latest video cards. Way too much markup on those. I'm still running Ti4200s on my 3 PCs in the house and am about to upgrade to ATI Radeon 9600 Pros soon so I can run Half Life 2 decently.

Oh and I have 6 Macs in the house (ranging from 12" G4 powerbook to a bunch of G4 Towers), which I do all my business work. The PCs are mainly just for the games (kids and myself).

You didn't get the 8k memory upgrade?

My first was an Atari 800XL (with the cassette drive, later upgrading to the wickedly expensive 5.25" floppy drive, which could store a whopping 80kb or so per side), and as it turns out I was in constant battles with all the Commodore-64 folks out there.

You used to be able to fit a lot of code into 256 bytes, not any more though. Ah the memories...

I use it for everything people do at home... having four 21" monitors means never having to say you're sorry.

Erm, that's not quite right..

Having four 21" monitors means being able to play chess on one monitor, IRC/MU* on another monitor, and have the other two free for working from home, webbrowsing, and whatever else comes up.
