View Full Version : RX-8 road test: PaddockTalk (Canada) New Yorker 03-04-2007, 11:15 AM http://www.paddocktalk.com/news/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=38384 RenoIV 03-04-2007, 12:59 PM Good read Thanks for posting it WI Rotory 03-04-2007, 08:48 PM Thats a remarkable review. I haven't read any of this guys reviews b4. Maybe he waxes poetic about everything. I disagree about the automatic being preferable to the stick. I don't understand that at all. gh0st 03-04-2007, 10:43 PM the reporter is nothing more then a fanboi New Yorker 03-05-2007, 12:35 AM Yes, any reporter who loves the 8 is obviously a fanboy. Reporters can love Porsches, BMWs and Ferraris 'cause hey, those are great cars—but anyone who loves an 8 is a fanboy. TomAssBender 03-05-2007, 12:51 AM New Yorker, that put a sly grin on my face. +1 dbright007 03-05-2007, 03:20 AM Thats a remarkable review. I haven't read any of this guys reviews b4. Maybe he waxes poetic about everything. I disagree about the automatic being preferable to the stick. I don't understand that at all. Nice read. WI - what did you dislike about the auto that cause's you to disagree? gh0st 03-05-2007, 12:33 PM no... comments like "Ferrari? - who needs a Ferrari!!" "You can?t just drive this car - you have to DRIVE!!! this car at top speed everywhere. I hate to say this, but the automatic might be the one to buy?" and "The sound system is fantastic..." make him a fanboy. he isnt objective at all. our sound systems suck Winfree 03-05-2007, 05:22 PM Good post The dude actually drove an 8 before commenting and I think he is hooked! I agreed with him on the shift - (yah yah I know) The first 8 I tried, a silver 04, had what I considered a Ford truck shifter - nasty! And I was driving a 323 stick! So I went for an automatic on the 8! Even so, I can pop it into a state where I can use the wheel shifters when I disagree with it's computer or when I want a little more torque... Sure, the 8 is not a race car - but not many cars can do 250 - One of my neighbors has a little car that can do 205 and is on the circuit with his son (their new car does the 250!) But the 8 could follow an ambulance - just did it, legally at 110 mph- And I knew that I could pass it if I really needed to - even automatic 8s rule! SOVINE 03-05-2007, 05:23 PM Gas mileage 8?? What the hell is he smoking? New Yorker 03-05-2007, 05:23 PM True, some of those comments (audio, automatic trans) are questionable. But… his excitement of the 8 driving experience matches up amazingly close to mine! I haven't seen that sense of excitement much in other reviews (lots of kudos, respect and admiration—but not so much the emotion). Behn 03-05-2007, 08:40 PM I'm sorry, it's hard to talk shit about someone who gives your car a good review, but this guy is just an idiot. He basically tries to make love to the car through his article and then says we need to buy an automatic, please. I'm not going to say that the 8's clutch is the easiest to master, and I, having not driven a stick in 4 years, had my growing pains. But this guy is a supposed "car reviewer/ road tester." The fact that I can drive a stick better than him is a complete joke. The fact that someone who is supposed to be a "car guy" recomends an automatic is a joke(especially on a sports car). The whole website is a joke. Quoting his review on the Dodge Nitro: "DaimlerChrysler are on a roll with their vehicles these days and the Nitro just keeps that steam roller momentum going." What? Steam Roller? Unbelievable. I love my car, and most of his article reads about how I would describe it to myself, but as a critic his review is an absolute joke. "You don't drive this car...you DRIVE it.." or whatever the hell he kept saying. Jesus, thank god for the guys at Top Gear - gave the car great reviews, didn't pull punches where they had gripes, knew how to drive a stick, and didn't blow smoke up my ass about how I had to "DRIVE" the car. It's a sports car idiot, I'm 22, of course I'm going to "DRIVE" it, I "DROVE" my '88 volvo. Writing "drive" in all caps does not mean you are creative, it means you are an ass clown. There, I said it. Here's the Top Gear review for good measure: Top Gear (http://youtube.com/watch?v=QRiPSlx8PxA) > paddockass. Chris_Bangle 03-05-2007, 09:27 PM "The six-speed manual?s gate is very close and many times I thought I was in 4th gear when in fact I was in 6th - because the engine revs so high, you think you?re in the wrong gear. Combined with the stiff shifting and the difficulty of modulating it with the clutch, this is quite likely the only car for which I would ever recommend an automatic transmission - and dare I say it - flappy-paddle gear shifting on the steering wheel!" WHY OF WHY DOES HE REVIEW CARS ??? btw I didn't bother reading this crap the comment about the auto did it for me. Rootski 03-05-2007, 10:08 PM I'd still like a Ferrari. Aipex8 03-06-2007, 12:15 AM Of all the things to complain about... the transmission? Mine shifts like butter, I don't know where the hell he learned how to drive. myriadshalaks 03-06-2007, 12:48 AM yeah, the excitement that overwhelmed him upon driving the 8 was identical to mine. his wife and mine should have tea. 9291150 03-06-2007, 09:38 AM ...sigh. The guy never drove an auto, he just suggested it because he found the MT 8 hard to drive smoothly. myriadshalaks 03-06-2007, 06:10 PM i think his point was more that the MT will pwn you if you don't know how to handle it. Chris_Bangle 03-06-2007, 06:26 PM ...sigh. The guy never drove an auto, he just suggested it because he found the MT 8 hard to drive smoothly. What he might have suggested is that an smg (7 gears would be nice) type system will suit the nature of the engine. But how is he suggesting that the auto will be better a option, not having actually driven one, if you are right then ... WI Rotory 03-06-2007, 10:04 PM I don't get the issue with the MT. Drive a Mazda 6 with a 5 speed MT, that one took awhile to master & I've been driving sticks for a long time. RX8 was notable as to how easy it was to drive quickly & smoothly in just a few shifts. My wife noted it also. I bought my car used, maybe it takes some time for a new clutch to break in. Behn 03-06-2007, 10:26 PM I don't see why he suggested the automatic period. Unless you have one arm (or leg) and still want to be in a sports car, there is no excuse for buying an automatic RX-8. Period. It's a sports car, not a buick. If you want an auto there are probably much better cars to buy than an 8, like a Maxima (my grandma has one, she likes it.) If you've never driven a stick before, learn. If the 8's is hard to get used to, grow some balls. :crying: I'm sorry but no one can ever convince me that the auto 8 is a better option. New Yorker 03-07-2007, 12:22 AM well what if you had one leg? dynamho 03-07-2007, 10:24 AM That was one of the most ridiculous reviews I've read. What if you had all the same questions about mileage, oil, reliability, etc - and weren't sure you wanted to make the purchase. But you got offered a 2005 AT w/ 9500 miles - well over 2yrs warranty - touring pkg. For 17k flat. I learned to drive in an MT car. I decided I could live with driving in "manushift" for a while to decide the other issues. In a few more months, I can sell/trade for a new MT. Will only owe 14-15k and have about 18k miles, 18 month warranty on the car. I think I will do fine. Just can't believe I get called out as a "grandma" with "no balls" on Rx8club.com Chris_Bangle 03-07-2007, 11:49 AM ^ we are all proud and supportive of you. U WILL DO FINE :) funspork 03-07-2007, 12:18 PM What are the square bumps under the headlights? Just can't believe I get called out as a "grandma" with "no balls" on Rx8club.com So you're saying basically that you are doing some type of "test drive"? Seems like a lot of money to spend/risk to decide if its the car for you. My argument is simply that if you are going to own an 8, it should be an MT. I'm sorry if I came off as harsh, but A) that's how I feel, and B) a lot of it was me still griping about the paddock talk guy. Sato Tatsuya 03-07-2007, 01:12 PM What are the square bumps under the headlights? I believe those are headlight sprays/washers? If I am not mistaken. New Yorker 03-07-2007, 03:43 PM Yes, they're headlight washers. Wish we had them here. WI Rotory 03-07-2007, 10:03 PM "Just can't believe I get called out as a "grandma" with "no balls" on Rx8club.com" Don't take it personal. We all make choices based on what we can afford. For you, the AT was a good fit given your resources. Thats alot different from giving a review that purports the superiority of an AT in a sports car that revs to 9 grand. As I stated above, IMHO, the MT is an excellent tranny & quite easy to learn to drive. I can't see why a "professional ( assumed) " reviewer would suggest a tranny. If the choice was RX8 AT or no RX8, I'm guessing alot of folks here would take the auto. I sure would. dbright007 03-08-2007, 07:04 AM I totally agree with the points about the reviewer - I wouldn't recommend an auto for a sports car, and have no idea why he would. I only wanted to say you don't have to be an amputee or not know stick to own an AT - different situations arise and I luckily got a chance to buy a car I wanted a year or so early (albeit not exactly the way I wanted it) and the time to decide if spending that money in a year is the right decision. Trust me - nothing was taken personal - the "Just can't believe I get called ..." line was supposed to be sarcastic. As in "oooh - I haven't heard that before - lol" Anybody that sensitive doesn't last the first 3 days around here. :) Spin9k 03-08-2007, 07:55 AM That was one of the most ridiculous reviews I've read. The level of writing reminds me of this site: http://www.realultimatepower.net/index4.htm This is a picture of my best friend Mark showing off. He's a lot older than me and almost done with puberty, which is bragable. Now that's just one damn laugh out loud queer site LMBO reading that and, yes, I think it perhaps WAS the aforementioned 'car reviewer' when he was maybe 2-3 years younger than when he did the review LOL!! :rollingla |
