Will the RX-8 ever become a classic?

I know its probably too early to think about that now, but I have my dad's old BMW 2002 Touring in a garage which we kept from 1973 on that hunch, and I once had an early Elise bought with the same thing in mind (but the ex got that - GRRRRR and left me with a Punto!). I plan to keep my RX-8 for a long time - but whether I can beat Dad's 30 years is another question altogether.

Are you lot keeping for the long haul, or changing cars every few year? Can't quite work out how to do a poll - anyone else have a clue?

I definitly want to keep it for a long time.

As I don't intend to use it as primary car and I definitly think it is a special car. So I hope it will become a classic.

I would think the RX-8 might be the first in a new revolution of rotary engined cars and that coupled with its slightly quirky styling is the sort of thing that attracts collectors in later years.

A mould breaker, the first of a long line etc.

On the other hand it might be the last rotary if Mazda doesn't get it right, and as such it might become collectable for that reason.

The only negative against it is probably the numbers it will be produced in, in the long run it won't be that rare a car, but then cars like Cortinas and Mk1 Escorts can now be considered as classics so who knows.

I think the RX-8 is a good bet for future classic status, and am planning to hang on to my first rotary if possible.
