The RX-8 ranked 6th in the Premium Sports Car category in terms of total sales for 2006 with 5.52% of the market (a decline of 1.86% over 2005).

The MX-5 ranked 5th in the Sports Car category in terms of total sales for 2006 with 5.44% of the market (an increase of 2.42% over 2005).

I would expect an RX-8 replacement next year. Although I still wish the turbo RX-7 made a comeback

I don't get it. What's a regular vs Premium sport car?

The Z4 and S2000 is regular, but the RX-8 is premium?

The "Sports Car" class includes rolling heaps of shit like the Eclipse, G6, and Chrysler Sebring.

The "Premium Sports Car" class includes rolling heaps of shit like the Crossfire and Lexus SC. Savvy?

I think I understand. My RX-8 has the premium BOSE sound system too.

Mazda designs the segments itself. My best guess is the regular class is defined by price and i4/v6 engine. Although some of the other segments don’t make sense either. For example the Mazda5 falls under small car category with the Mazda3, while the PT Cruiser and HHR are in the small utility segment with the Tribute and CX-7.

Whoever made those groups needs to lay off the crack.

That Mustang total is just mind boggling, I knew how many they sold but when you see it compared to the competition is really is remarkable. The one that did surprise me are the Eclipse sales, I had no idea they've sold that many.

One last thing...

my guess would be cars that run on regular and premium fuel.

Just a guess.

I second that.... that total was ridiculous! makes me think the new Cameros and Chargers will do pretty good.

That's because the teens and 20 somethings of America are crying out for a stylish coupe for ~$20k. Dodge, Ford, Mazda, and Toyota don't even make anything in that segment and the Civic Si, Tiburon, G5, Saturn ION, and Cobalt just don't cut it in the looks department. I know that most of you don't like the looks of the new Eclipse (I'm sort of on the fence myself), but very many normal people in that age range very much do.

If someone wants to challenge them they need to consider style, inside and out. Perhaps the Kabura will be Mazda's answer.

I wonder if they counted GT's and V6's together. It seems they did.

Ok, so everyone here trashes the 350Z and Mustang because they're so ubiquitous and then trash the Evo because it's not on the list (i.e. - too rare)?

Some people just live life with blinders on...

The list just shows you that people are like Lemmings, they don't know and they don't care. They just do what every other uninformed person does.

The Eclipse looked good to me when I saw it on the lot for the first time. Now when I see them on the street I am so glad that I didn't seriously consider getting one. I don't know what it is but the styling is not aging well IMO.
The Mustang reminds me way too much of the '70 ruststang I had during school. I shudder when I see one.

I think the new Eclipse could be a nice looking car. The wheels gaps, wheel choice, and a couple lines they changed from the concept makes it fall short.

What a poorly thought out list....Z4 in regular sports car and Lexus SC as a sports car?

Obviously, the people putting this list together drive a Camrys.

A FWD chassis based off the Galant--a recipe for failure. As one person said, it'll keep up with the 8 in a straightline, but when asked to turn it'll understeer right into the tree.

For the price difference between an 8 and an Eclipse you can strip the weight and add AWD. It's not a comparable car to the 8 in any facet other than the fact that it's a coupe. Mazda doesn't offer a "normal" 2-door coupe so the comparisons aren't going to be difficult.

first year of the new model.. first year always sells a lot more than any other years.

That's because the Evo is a compact sedan... not a sports car

No.... They drive Mazdas. Like I said before, the segments were defined by Mazda North American Operations,

And it is not segmented by regular/premium fuel because the Miata specifies premium
