yesterday when i shift from 3rd to 4th gear at around 8k rmp on the high way, there came out this grinding sound which annoyed me. it happened again later in the day when i tried to shift from 3rd to 4th gear at very high rpm( it should be almost the redline).nothing happened from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd tough, i guess it's because the gear ratio is lower for 1st,2nd and 3rd , compared to 4th.

so is the grinding sound because the way i shift was incorrect? e.g. i release the clutch pedal too early? i did push the pedal to the very end !!!!

please help me out here!!!

by the way, does the grinding sound do a lot of damage to my car? this is what i concerned the most actually.

thx!! :)

Same thing happens in my 8. Like it is revved too high to line up and grab that next gear. Im not exactly sure why it does that but i can tell you its NOT faulty shifting on my part, as i have tried over and over with perfect shifts and the same thing happens. It may be the synchros are shot or maybe i need a new clutch (41k miles on my 2004 rx8). Im not really sure of te exact problem, but i plan to find out when i go to get a new flywheel and clutch installed within the year.

I occasionally grind my 4th to 5th gear shift on the freeway. I feels like I properly shifted into 5th but once I let the clutch out "Grind". Don't know why its only with my 4th to 5th shifts.

37k km on my 04 rx8, i hope nothing in the transmission system is borken or worn out.
i'll try to find out what the problem is when i do my next service by asking the mechanic.

thx for the responses guys!! : )

This is (I am told) a bent shift fork. Easiest fix is a used tranny. Call Paul at mazmart. I had the exact same problem and had no issue with the swap (though I had dropped the trans 3 times at that point.) To actually open the tranny and fix it is not worth the money. This will only get worse. Buy a lightweight flywheel while you are at it.
