View Full Version : what can cause catalytic failure turbosa22c 02-03-2007, 06:30 PM heres a link i found. straight forward easy to understand stuff. might help someone. http://www.car-sound.com/04basics/04failures.asp foo77 02-03-2007, 11:56 PM nice find :icon_tup: Wilson 02-04-2007, 12:41 AM Yes. Very good info. d j 02-04-2007, 01:51 AM thanks for sharing! nycgps 02-07-2007, 02:34 AM Answer : Human beings. 4 years to Supercharge 02-07-2007, 04:13 AM It a catalytic convertor gets clogged or a meltdown occurs can that be seen by looking down the pipe? I noticed that all the examples had the catalytic cut in half to show the damage. :scratchhe Jax_RX8 02-07-2007, 10:30 AM No wonder our 8's have so many catalyst failures - we have all the characteristics that destroy converters (and more?): - more unburned fuel than a piston engine entering exhaust causing higher EGTs and carbon buildup - oil being added to the combustion process via the OMP and Premix causing even more carbon generation - carbon buildup fouling the plugs and amplifying the unburned fuel problem - all this super heating and clogging the converter at the same time - all this excess converter heat backing up causing higher engine/exhaust/combustion temps - More heat stress on all engine components What to do? Glad I run FP60. Ajax 02-07-2007, 10:14 PM So i thought mine was failing this week and it turns out i needed 4 new plugs and 4 new coils.. and it probably was failing, because needing 4 new plugs and 4 new coils would cause the damn thing to eat unburnt fuel.. they shoulda replaced it.. blah.. dealerships.. Razz1 02-07-2007, 11:01 PM Samething we been saying for years, but another sight helps those that question us. nycgps 02-08-2007, 12:01 AM It a catalytic convertor gets clogged or a meltdown occurs can that be seen by looking down the pipe? When he show me the *dead cat*, it was actually all empty inside .... damn now when I think of it, I should've asked him *Can I keep it?* lol guess not, I think dealerships need the old parts to get credit for new parts. Georgia8er 02-08-2007, 10:29 AM Even though an RX-8 runs rich, too lean will burn up the cat too. Your EGT will increase with a lean condition also. |
