The rotary isn't outlawed. It never was. Back in '92 the new rules dictated a certain engine size for each class and that would have limited Mazda to a 2 rotor which wouldn't have been competitive. The rules changed again later on to allow a broader variety of engines again. The current ALMS car went to a piston engine but not because they had to. They never realized the full potential of the rotary but instead just decided to buy a new engine design from AER and stamp Mazda's name on it.

i have a VW GTI, which is in the same family. the new audi's are really nice. Probably my next car will be an audi
