i'm in the market for a new digital camera. my canon powershot has issues now so i need a new one. it was only 3.2 MP anyway. i don't want to spend more than $350 and i would like to be at least 6MP. any suggestions?

Canon S3IS.

Don't buy into the MegaPixel Myth. Having a LARGER image won't make it 'better' - it can make it worse.

Agreed. Unless you're printing posters megapixels are just not important at all. 6MP will be more than enough.

I hear good things about Canon's.

I picked up a refurbished Kodax DX7950 and have had no issues with it. They have others in your price range on THEIR SITE (http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=9/19/4177&pq-locale=en_US)

i liked it but mine had a defective CCD and when they fixed it the pictures are blurry now. not worth returning back again for them to fix it i just want to get a new one.

Kodak V610 or V603

I have a Z7590 (big form, 10x zoom) and I love it except for the size. I have been looking at the 603 and the 610 as they have the same features mine but a lot smaller. The V603 has 3x optical zoom and the v610 has 10x (a little more expensive, but if you need it it is there, and still in your price range.)

I have also heard good things about the canons, used one a couple times and my friend has one, but it didn't quite have all the feature mine has.

Exactly what "DMP" said, it helps a little but for what you are going to use it for dont worry about megapixel. High megapixel's are for people who want to do poster size images. Maybe a little higher than what you have now should be good. Be more concerned about Features of the camera and the Optical Zoom(Great thing to have).

I'm saying optical zoom because its helps when you zoom into things and still have a sharp capture.

Canon and Nikon are very good camera's. I personally have a FujiFilm S5200 and I like it a lot. I think it takes great pictures. I took tons of pictures with it last year, heres some old one:

And even then - all they MAY Be doing is printing REALLY BIG bad photos. :)

I posted this on a Foto Website; thought some of y'all would enjoy, too!

These Photos were taken with either a FujiFinePix 2300z ($70?, 2.1MP?), Canon A75 ($110, 3.2MP), Canon S2IS ($250 5MP), or a Canon 20D($1100 - with kit lens, 8.2MP) (One has two pics shown). Can you guess which camera took which photograph?

No cheating; if you know me, and know when I took these, you'll know which camera I used...just go by what you see posted here.

Ok here are some pictures I took in Jamaica last June. This will show a perfect example of what I'm talking about Optical Zoom.

In the first pic you can see I just took a picture of the street. Now if you look in the middle of that picture you will see a small green object(my buddy in a green shirt). Now keep in mind, I'm standing in the same exact spot for both pics. Now look at the second picture. Thats when I zoomed in. It still has a pretty good picture. Thats a perfect example of the optical zoom doing what its made to do.

The others are of my best friends girlfriend. Its just a random shot of me blurring out the objects close to me and focusing on her face.

The last one is also a good optical zoom shot. I zoomed into a piece of bamboo that was being hit my falling water. You can see from where I zoomed in.

My advice is spend more money than initially through to be warranted, then take good care of it and don't drop it. There are many, many photos of distant lands that I wish I could go back in time to retake on a better camera. These include photos from Scotland, Sicily, Dubai, Greece, Spain, Oman, and Australia. Places I might not ever go to again.

Don't skimp on the camera or suffer the consequences. I feel like banging my head against a wall every time I think about such wasted potential.

+1 - Go to the section on best camera's and decide was is most important. Size, Zoom, Features etc. I bought a FZ7 6mp superzoom (12x). Love it. The digital stabilization is helpful for those long zoom shots.

The new Powershots seem to be pretty incredible cameras for the money. The A630/640/710 are all capable of some stunning photos and have some pretty nice macro features. I have an older Nikon right now and it has served me well and I would not hesitate to get another one, but the features of the Canons seem to slightly trump those of the nikons for the same price. I have heard the Canons have a bit of an issue with redeye, but as long as you don't mind that go with the A710.

dmp, I don't know if those are your pics or not, but I'd be surprised if the first one wasn't taken with the Canon 20D. If not, you've got a pretty big aperature on a little point-and-shoot camera and I'd be impressed.

For me it's either a tiny point-and-shoot or a DSLR which is inherently going to be big. Half of taking good pictures is actually taking pictures. You gotta bring your camera to do that and you're much more likely to do so if it fits in your pocket.
