View Full Version : Wanna try a cool class action???
Winfree 01-26-2007, 11:25 PM A carefully leaked goverment report – which “took 6 years to compile” – is being released, with as much publicity as the media can generate, declaring that the “secret and leaked” conclusion is: Humans are causing global warming, and they need to stop!
I have decided to embrace Global Warming just on this announcement alone!
Yes – Humans are causing warming, so they must be able to cause cooling too, and since California has just suffered the coldest deep freeze in 30 years, it must be fault of all those collective efforts to turn off the warming!
Strawberry producers should sue New York, which is holding a Stop Global Warming Festival, because it has been too effective in reducing the Warming. This must have been what caused millions of dollars of loss by freezing those California Strawberries!
The more I think about it the more I like it!
Since certain Massachusetts and Tennessee Representatives have taken personal responsibility for discovering, promoting and reducing warming, it is only fair that they pay out of pocket for the effectiveness of their efforts!!! So far, based on the Tribune reports they would owe $11.54 million for the loss of the avocado crop, $2.07 million for the lemon crop and $3.89 for the strawberries…
You New Yorkers should be able to sue Massachusetts for broken water lines, injuries from falling on slippery sidewalks and all ice related traffic accidents …. Their efforts to reduce warming really worked – just look what they did to you!!!
I think I will drive my car around so the green house gases can help California get warm again!
DarkBrew 01-27-2007, 08:43 AM Was that supposed to be funny or were you serious? Sorry but it's hard to tell over the internet.
BunnyGirl 01-27-2007, 10:46 AM I think I will drive my car around so the green house gases can help California get warm again!
Best idea I've heard all day!!!! :)
DaveCM203 01-27-2007, 10:50 AM :cwm27: Too funny
lone_wolf025 01-27-2007, 11:13 AM I had heard about this. Frankly I don't care what they say because its just a report being released to the media. Now if it had been published by a distinguished scientist in a notable scientific journal submitted for peer review, THEN I might give it more credit.
I'd love to see how these people would scramble if a volcano somewhere erupted and dumped tons of greenhouse gases and ash into the air. That'd probably be our fault too.

Lets hope we don't get a volcano on top of this, we want the anti-warming crew to take full responsibility!
We have just suffered a $26 million dollar crop loss because of cold (The Tribune, SanLuisObispo.com, Jan 23, 2007!!!
Now, if we throw out normal temperaure cycling (which made this a predictable event) , and accept the religious truth of Global Warming, then we must agree that people can do something about the warming and they have been doing it since 1993! ...For example, in Japan, office and factory workers had to go without air conditioning to "reduce the warming"...People have been working on creating cooling ever since ENRON agreed to help the Goverment fight it by selling CO2 credits.
Right now, we are talking, in California, about rationing gas, and rationing driving - you can only go to work and back -
But, before we do that, think how long that they have already been fixing warming! And this summer, at the South Pole they measure the coldest temperatures ever recorded !!!
So, see, it really worked!!! If they can take away our cars, determine what engine can be used, limit our freedom of the road (we do not yet need permits to visit Los Vegas), than their ideas must really be working and so they must take responsibility for what they have done!!!
If there is a drought (associated with cooling) in California, or frost and snow, down to Austin, Texas, or 3 weeks of continuous snow at Colorado, or 46 people killed in an ice storm in Oklahoma - then Someone has to pay for turning down the air conditioner!
I think any Lawyer worth his salt would love a case like this - I bet it's worth millions.
As long as people can make money by pushing Global Warming then real science gets pushed out of the way! When they are made to take responsibility for their words, and actions, and it costs them, instead of us... We might get a little truth and justice around here!!! I can feel the warmth already! :D:
DaveCM203 01-27-2007, 11:58 AM The earth goes through periods of warm and cold naturaly. Drilling in the South Pole seems to show that we are heating up faster than before and our CO2 levels are growing at a faster rate than during the other warm periods. The bad thing about all this is we do not know for sure. We won't for hundreds (maybe thousands) of years.
Winfree 01-27-2007, 12:33 PM Amen on your cyclic theory, but if our anti- Global Warming efforts are too little and slow to be noticed, then why are we willing to accept laws that outlaw our engines?
It's always "natural cycling" if the Global Warming people are put in the docket,
But surely we can give them some credit for over decade of hard work...Jus think of all those poor Japanese office workers who had to go without air conditioning to help reduce our warming....
Bob Lilley, the county agricultural comissioner said "It's the worst freeze disaster I've seen in my career - 29 years". 15 of the Counties farms lost all of their produce. 108 lost 50-90 %.
Looks like too much anti-warming to me!!! :lol2:
Mom says we could also exercise less, that could reduce our bodies CO2 output -
dtorre 01-27-2007, 04:42 PM You know winfree....if you honestly wanna go ahead with this....lets....I'll be right there behind ya....picking up all the hundreds you and the lawyers will be dropping ;)
jisoo26 01-27-2007, 05:11 PM Wow I can't believe people still argue about this.
Yes, there's a natural cycle.
No, this time it's not that natural. Past cycles didn't have 6+ billion people along with all the millions of vehicles/factories/all other industry-related stuff dumping all that waste.
No, global warming is not evenly distributed. Some places get way warmer and others get way colder. (No this does not mean it "evens out".)
And finally..
No, we shouldn't halt production of cars but yes, I think people have their heads in the sand if they think we're not a major cause of all this stuff.
lone_wolf025 01-27-2007, 06:19 PM There is too much information for and against global warming to really take it seriously. Add to that the fact that the media portrays global warming as a fact and conveniently glances over or completely disregards the mention of things that seem to point against global warming.
The fact of the matter is that the earth's atmosphere and weather cycles are extremely vast and extremely complex. Until we can extremely accurately make predictions about something as simple as the weather more than a week in advance we don't have much hope in fully understanding the natural warming and cooling trends of the earth.
However this isn't to say I'm in favor of moderation and reasonable limits on emissions. But when it gets to the knee jerk reactions of certain politicians that's where I draw the line.

If you want to keep on the "watch and see" stance, I'd rather have a knee-jerk reaction and be too careful than watch it hit the fan and be too late. Dunno about you but I can't exactly jet to another planet.
Of course I don't think there should be a stranglehold on things like car production, etc. But is it really that difficult for the government to mandate higher mpg ratings that match other 1st world countries? No I'm not talking about over 10 years, I'm thinking in less than 5. We all know the technology is there to support it easily.
DaveCM203 01-27-2007, 08:05 PM One theory for the unusual cold in some areas is that the warming is causing unusual weather patterns.
I do feel bad for the polar bears though.

Heard about that too huh? They're finding drowned polar bears in the ocean lately....never found any before. :(
Winfree 01-27-2007, 10:51 PM People really haven't been numerous enough in the polar waters to make many observations - it is only lately we have even been really aware of the bears as anything other than a hunting target.
I would look at factors besides warming - is there population pressure that is making the bears try to migrate? The salmon population dropped precipitously because of a bird borne fish virus that nearly destroyed domestic Alaskan salmon production only a few years ago and wild salmon dropped numbers dropped so low that seal and whale populations declined, while indigenous people feared the consequences of the loss of fishing. Were the drownings associated with this problem?
If people are present during the drownings do their presence contribute?
If polar bears lived in the Antarctic, we would have seen losses from freezing as some of the coldest temperatures on record just took place this year!
Which again makes us look at Global Warming causing Global Cooling? Now you can't have it both ways - if people can make a difference and if the difference they know they are making is to deliberately lower the temperature, well they should be happy for their success and cough up to cover the damages...
lone_wolf025 01-27-2007, 11:33 PM Correct me if I'm wrong but while the north pole icecap is "shrinking" due to whatever reason (be it global warming or not) isn't the icecap in Antarctica actually growing in size as of late?
Edit-
Just for kicks I checked a few media articles (translation take the good and bad with a grain of salt) but basically the arguments about all this melting ice are rather complex. Some of the areas (north pole for example) show decrease in ice based on satellite images, but the sats cannot do an accurate evaluation of the entire area to say if anything is really happening or not. Same goes for Greenland and Antarctica (some areas melting faster, others growing more). But rarely do they mention any of this on tv news. In the handful of articles I skimmed through they devote a single short sentence to these facts and then immediately proceed to say something along the lines of "BUT something bad will happen...in 60yrs" Yea in 60yrs the weather could change and start another global cooling trend.
Cool-Blue-Dad 01-27-2007, 11:45 PM I'd love to see how these people would scramble if a volcano somewhere erupted and dumped tons of greenhouse gases and ash into the air. That'd probably be our fault too.LOL! Yeah, let me know when all the coal and oil burned ever equals the amount of greenhouse gas from Mt. St. Helens (at least *most* of y'all must be old enough to remember that - the ash seen round the world - how about all the active volcanoes that *are* spewing right now) or let me know when the annual output of greenhouse gases from humans equals the amount output from natural forest fires (adjusted for those we keep putting out).
Oh, that's an idea - if I start a coal-fired electricity plant can I get greenhouse gas credits for putting out forest fires? :hahano:
Personally, I think if they climate is going to try to kill us all it'll be with another ice age - forgive me if I don't believe everything the TV tries to tell me. (no offense intended to those who buy the global warming story - you're convinced, that's fine for you)
Getting back to Winfree's idea - Winfree, have you got some lawyer connections? We can like the idea all we want, but none of us have the backing of a high-power legal firm. Without that it's just a funny joke.
Easy_E1 01-27-2007, 11:45 PM I will sue for the plants that froze in my front yard because it was 18 degree's in Arizona.
Winfree 01-27-2007, 11:47 PM Yes, and a similar phenomena has been observed on the planet mars...of course since it has an atmosphere composed of CO2 this could be pure Global Warming effect :cwm27:

I wouldn't mind you citing a few credible scientific sources that actually deny that humans have an effect on the environment.

Oh I have no doubt there are plenty of credible sources that say that. Just as there are probably plenty that say the opposite. If the media presented a less biased opinion I'd care more. Frankly though I have to wonder why the media is pushing so hard to force people to believe in global warming (I'm not saying everyone was forced into it). Guess world wide disaster caused by big greedy corporations and everyone who drives a car sells better than saying "Maybe but maybe not"

Instead of having no doubt, you should try to find out for yourself.
In reality, the scientific community all agree on this topic...heck, even the counsel that the bush administration came back saying they had "clear evidence of human influences on the climate system ". This isn't a controversy, it's a pretty solid theory.
You might also look into your media claims. In fact, the media doesn't report global warming in a congruent fashion with the scientific community. They underplay it, heavily. In the science world, there have been nearly 1000 published and peer reviewed articles on the subject...all supporting human link to climate change. On the flip side, not a single one opposing it exists. Somehow though, the media still gives a somewhat unconvinced perspective on it. I wonder why something so richly published, easily tested, universally supported and possibly important would not be more easily accepted by the population?

If I was a global warming type, I'd still try to find time, out of all the theory hocking I do, to do something about the mercury in the fish I eat. Ain't that the darned truth?
