View Full Version : RX-8 Envy
sunlightsilver 09-11-2003, 03:31 PM Just a feel-good message for y'all...
It's so nice to be one of the only RX-8 owners in SE Michigan... at least it seems that way, anyway - I still haven't seen any others on the road yet. I took delivery 8/28. I took a few family members for a quick joyride a couple days after I got it, one weekend evening, and I had people in $60G Lexuses and Mercedes turning their heads as I passed by. The heads still turn like crazy - people have never seen a car like this. Today I picked up a co-worker from a Chevy dealer after they dropped their Blazer off for repair, and as I waited in front of their service dept. garage, the crew was sitting there drooling and asking my friend about the car... they kept asking her if they could come over and see it, sit in it, and were telling her that they had never seen one in person, only on TV. So she told them to come on over and I had like 5 different employees, even a couple from the showroom come outside to see the ride. All asking me questions about it and such, and pretty amazed at the price - they all thought a car like this would cost upwards of $40,000! This co-worker friend of mine drives an '02 Vette as her other car, and says that she never got and never gets this kind of attention in her Vette :) Damn it feels good to be an RX-8 owner. Thought you'd all appreciate the story. Thx for reading, and ride on my brothers and sisters.

My kitted out M/T Sunlight Silver: GT package, red/black leather, Appearance package, rotary accent package, rear spoiler, front mudflaps, fender strakes, exhaust finishers, red/black parking brake, and a few other minor things (spare tire kit, cargo net, etc...)
mikeb 09-11-2003, 04:13 PM my experience has been the same
I love this car
mmjames 09-11-2003, 04:40 PM Same here. One of the strangest things is a lot of the people that come up to me say the same thing:
"So that's an RX-8, is the one that replaces the seven?"
I usually don't want to spent the time to explain the 7 was a pure sports car and this is more of a blend tween a sedan and a sports car.
One thing for sure is most of them just want to know more about the car.
And a last note: it is not the hp issue that causes them to come over to see the car.
Wankeler 09-11-2003, 04:55 PM GREEN with ENVY...
what a wonderful color! ;)
aside from what happens when I drive this thing.... when it is parked.... lemme tell ya.
For some reason (maybe because this car is HOT!), when the car is sitting still... parked at a restaurant, sitting next to the pump (do that alot!), in my DRIVEWAY!!!, people are drawn to it... they have to see it. I have not gotten a single negative comment from anyone that has inspected this car. Well.... maybe one, but that was about the 300 miles of road dirt that I picked up before I had a chance to wash it. ;)
Green is good... whether it's the color of my car, or from an envious person.
Cheers!
cruzdreamer 09-11-2003, 05:25 PM I am waiting for my sunlight silver baby and reading your thread and others like it are making me crazy.....I can't wait much longer!!! How long did you wait from build date to delivery? I have a build date of Sep. 1 and am in NW Illinois. I wish I could get one right now but I also have to sell my car. What are the most recent ETAs on delivery? I am getting automatic w/red/blk leather. Can't wait to be admired too. I was at a lot over the weekend on a Sunday and I felt like a salesperson....people were flocking around the car and I was proud to tell them all about it and how I am waiting on mine. I am too excited and 2 months is a long wait for me?

I hope it will be worth the wait, and be careful not to hype yourself out to the point it has to fly before you really enjoy it. It still just a car. A great one, in my view, but just a car. Keep it real. Good luck on the wait!!
cruzdreamer 09-11-2003, 05:39 PM I try to keep myself in check.....maybe I should stop reading these threads, huh! I know it will be worth the wait, but I wish it was here so I couls stop thinking and talking about it so much....I drive the hubby crazy....as he says...."It's just a car". Thanks
LightEmUp 09-11-2003, 06:01 PM Where in SE michigan you from? I'm in Troy, got mine on 7/28 from Cook Mazda. I saw one other RX-8 during the dream cruise, it was Nordic Green, looked alright. I pulled up next to him and it turns out he was testing the car for Autoweek.

your hubby, elara's hubby and my wife. it's called the "Spouses of RX-8 Owners" club. they can get together and talk about how crazy we are;)
Elara 09-11-2003, 08:37 PM My boss thought I was exaggerating when I told him how much attention I was getting in the car. And then I drove him to lunch today, and at a stoplight, a guy in a green mustang did a double take, then started yelling at me across traffic about how nice my car was. And then stared, and stared, and stared....thought his head was going to swivel around like an owl's when the light went green.
DAC17 09-11-2003, 08:52 PM Went to the VW dealer to buy the in-laws a Passat last weekend. Salesman hadn't seen the 8 yet, but opined that it must have cost "$38 to $42 thousand". Amazing.
grogiefrog 09-11-2003, 09:29 PM Good story!

My "spouse" is almost as enthusiastic about my ride as I am -- then again, he's a car nut just like me. He just bought an Infiniti FX35 though, so he's pretty well enamored with that right now -- which is good; he's stopped bugging me about taking my car to work! :D
RX-8-is-slow 09-11-2003, 11:44 PM What made u want this car. I'm wondering why u bought this car over cars in your class and cheaper that outperform this car in every category or close to it.
akrx8 09-12-2003, 12:57 AM i have had the same response.everyone says damn, thats like a 40,000 car.turns heads every where.

Maybe we can answer you once you're able to form a coherent sentence.
RX-8-is-slow 09-12-2003, 01:21 AM Is this better? What are u 10 or 12 years of age? I'm sorry I'm not the best typist. I'm sure you wouldn't have wrote that If I actually liked the rx-8. Also; Since you are so much better than me you should be able to understand what I wrote correct. Just answer the ?'s please. Enlighten me with your great knowledge please. Are you in Mensa? Hopefully you know what that is. My IQ was high enough, but don't believe in that crap b/c those mensa people have no common sense.

dude...I think you should seriously stop niffing the NOS you've been injecting into your Civic. When did Mensa come into the conversation? And what does IQ have to do with anything? All I asked for was a coherent sentence (which you have yet to provide) on what your exact question was. Anyways, I've already answered your question on another thread.

Almost everyone here that bought the RX-8 bought it for the overall package of looks, class, handling, performance, functionality, price, etc. Yes, you could have spent less and got a car that had better performance times, but then you are compromising on the other things, I stated above, that make this car unique and special. I know of no other vehicle that gives you this overall package for the price Mazda is charging for the RX-8.
You are obviously hung up about speed, and are interested in nothing else. From reading your 8+ posts, it is obvious you will not ever buy the RX-8 or have any intention of buying one. You are nothing but a troll, and you only here on this forum to be an instigator.

RX-8-is-slow 09-12-2003, 01:52 AM So I should read all your other posts huh. Maybe u should read mine. I hate rice. I have a 1970 454 Stingray Vette. I have a 98 grand am pos daily driver. I would never buy a civic. I hate ricers. Here is my slogan bottles are for babies or slow cars. Read idiot I wrote why u bought this car over all the other cars that are in the same class and or cheaper than a rx-8. A evo8 looks good it is very functional, has more power, has better times, has awd and seats 4 easily. Oh yeah I almost forgot will whip your ass in the twisties.
I like the thing about McDonalds will give u credit. I hate their food though. I have the money to buy a rx-8 in cash If I wanted to, but I don't like the car other than it looks fast just wish it was. By the way I work in the real estate industry so I could probably buy a McDonalds.

For those of you that think I'm a troll, please take note of this guy. :p
5Gen_Prelude 09-12-2003, 02:08 AM Let me ask you a question, is there anything I could say to you that would make you regret buying a 454 Vette? To the point you would do something about it?
Do you honestly think someone who has nothing good to say about someone else's personal choice could POSSIBLY change their mind?
You only have two choices for your existence here:
1) To prove people are wrong about their choice. If this is the case then you are going about it the wrong way.
2) To bust people's chops. In which case, well that's just pathetic. Grow up

I didn't know selling trailer homes was considered "real estate." I guess I learn something new everyday.

Now I know what kind of car RX-8-is-slow owns! It's a mid-seventies Camaro up on blocks, sitting in his front lawn. I can picture him now, sittng in there, playing race car driver yelling "Vroom Vroom" at the top of his lungs till his Mommy calls him in for dinner.
RX-8-is-slow 09-12-2003, 03:49 AM You talk about pathetic. Yeah I sell trailer homes to your mom. When u grow up I will. Here's a concept for u. This what I do. When people can't afford their house payment. And they get letters from the loan company or bank telling them that they are behind on their house payment. Well what I do is called preforeclosure where I will pay off their house and give them like 5k to move out and get settled somewhere else. The big thing is I save their credit. Foreclosures in some states stay on their credit record forever. Some states its 7 years it varies. I will buy their house and then sell it for more. I don't buy trailers or slums. I stay in the middle class. I mostly buy houses in the suburbs of Saint Louis.
I didn't buy the vette. I got it as a graduation gift from my dad for getting my Bachelors in Business Management a year early. I would not buy a vette like my dad b/c I don't like spending over 30k on a car. I rather put it into my house which gains value unlike cars which lose value the minute u drive it off the lot.
Why are we even reacting to this plonker.
cell, padded, certified......I think you get my drift.

sixspeed 09-12-2003, 05:39 AM Fantastic.
Everyone who cares what our good friend does for a living, please raise your hand.... now.
.......
Thought so.
So you take advantage of people in financial difficulty, and mummy & daddy bought you your nice shiny 'vette.
Sounds like a big man of the world.... :D

Consider this your warning. If you're just here to troll, tell me now so I can get rid of you before you cause any more problems. As for your first post, if you can't figure out why we all bought the 8 from reading a few posts on this forum, you apparently can't read. Since you insist on making an ass of yourself in public, I'm giving you the warning in public instead of pms.
And everyone else- stop replying to this person, because if this turns into a flame war we'll have to shut this thread down too. Ignore him and he'll go away.
cruzdreamer 09-12-2003, 08:42 AM Cool an FX 35 and an RX 8......two awesome cars. I am a car nut also, whereas, the hubby feels it's just transportation. FX35 is a beast(meant in a good way), I wanted it when it first came out but we already had a new Mountaineer. Enjoy your vehicles! Can't wait for the 8.
cruzdreamer 09-12-2003, 08:45 AM Bud...you are in the wrong forum. Nobody wants to talk to you. enuf said!
success07 09-12-2003, 08:48 AM Sunlight silver, can you hook us up with some pics of your ride? I am considering adding the front mud-flaps to my app. package when it comes in but haven't seen it yet. Thanks in advance and congrats on the new ride!
WilliamT 09-12-2003, 08:52 AM In all honesty, "RX-8-is-slow" did ask a legit question before the flame wars started.
I don't own an RX-8, but would definitely consider an RX-8 over a Lancer Evolution. I just don't see whats so special about a turbo 4-cylinder?
There are a lot of factors to consider other than 0-60 times and quarter mile times. I think the RX-8 is plenty fast.
Styling is important and will always be subjective for everyone. Some folks hate the Evo styling. Its more for the teenager crowd especially with the huge wing.
How the car rides is also important. I'm sure the RX-8 rides much better than an Evo. From what I've heard the Evo's ride is very stiff.
Reliability. I'm more comfortable buying a Mazda than over Mitsubishi. We had a Mazda back in 87 and the car just would not die. Ran great for the 13 years before we sold it for a larger car.
In my opinion, the RX-8 interior is also a lot better than the Evo. The Evo interior looks kind of cheap.
Also, there are currently no other rotary powered engines in the US. I remember hearing the rev of a rotary engine. Wow, is it smooth. Had a biggest smile on my face afterwards.
Now I'm jealous! :-)
The Ace 09-12-2003, 09:03 AM Just one quick question: why are you all mentioning the fact that people think this is a >40K car as bizzare ? How much does it cost over there in the US ?
Cause over here it sits pretty much around the 40K mark......
JaxFL_RX8 09-12-2003, 09:41 AM Fully loaded MSRP (full price before issues became public) $31,100; out the door for a little over $33K. A better price could now be negotiated I'm sure.
I love mine. The car is kewlest I've owned, moreso than the '88 RX7 convertible I used to own before my boy came along. To have a "family" car this sweet is a dream come true.

Not quite -- $31,100 is the MSRP for a 6MT GT. "Fully loaded" implies the Nav system (around $2,000) plus any number of appearance accessories -- still well under $40,000.

You're right!! I forgot about the Nav and accessories.
sunlightsilver 09-12-2003, 04:05 PM Hey all, sorry for the no-responses today to all the questions. Been busy today. It's sweet to see all the positive posts from everyone, and kinda nasty to see the pointless crap which had gone on with the "why did u buy the car when u could have gotten a faster car at a cheaper price" stuff. Anyway, thanks for the support. I love the car and all the other owners know why we made the choice we did. I have yet to see a car as well equipped both INSIDE and out and in the powerplant for this price. With the 6 sp. basing at 27 G's, it's one hell of a machine for the price, no question. So here's some other answers people were looking for:
1. I got the car from Suburban Mazda in Troy, and live in the general vicinity. I missed the dream cruise unfortunately this year. I tagged my 8 back in June, part of the second allocation (all 6 in the first one were already tagged), and the one I wanted, silver w/ red/blk interior, wasn't coming till the second allocation anyway, so I didn't mind waiting. They said the shipment was coming in August, and it finally came at the end of August, I think the 26th or 27th it actually showed up at the dealer. I picked it up the following day. I'm not sure when the actual build date was, but I think it was sometime in July.
2. Yeah, I can definitely post some pics - I'm gonna be out of town this coming week with no computer access, but I do have some digital pics a co-worker took of the ride (before the extra accessories were put on - mud flaps, fender strakes, parking brake handle, and exhaust finishers), and I have some pics sitting on a roll of 35 mm film of the "after" state. As soon as these are developed, I will definitely post them. I *can* say that I really dig the front mudflaps and fender strakes - they're very nice touches. To me, it completes the OEM underbody package. The exhaust accents are definitely cool, but I wish they would blend in a little better with the area they fit into... they look too "separate" if you know what I mean. I gotta look in the accessories brochure again, but i thought they looked much more like part of the fender than they actually do. In any case, I still think they're pretty cool.
I think that covers most of the stuff - I'll post the pics as soon as possible after I get back. I'll miss the 8 while I'm away :)
graphicguy 09-12-2003, 04:31 PM Notice I've been good?
Please don't punish me....I've been using the "IGNORE" button for "Gee, I want an RX8 BUT SUPPOSEDLY ALREADY HAVE A RATTLE TRAP OLD CORVETTE THAT MY DADDY GAVE TO ME ".
My vote? Bounce the fool!

posts like this make me wonder how I got my car so easily..
Not even knowing there was such a car, I saw the rx-8 for the first time back in august, and a week later, I was driving one.. I didn't have to pre-order or anything... they said they found one in oxnard that was my color choice and had all the options I requested (fully loaded)..
sounds like west coasters get a much bigger share of new cars than anywhere else.
mikeb 09-14-2003, 04:26 AM I didn't wait either for my 8
