View Full Version : Racing Beat PCM flash for Canadian!
RotaryPhil 01-01-2007, 08:55 PM Happy new year to all,
I've just received my PCM back from Racing Beat. I will be testing it this week and will post initial feedbacks on this thread.
I am probably one of the lucky guys that was asked to test the initial RB PCM flash in a canadian spec RX8.
Based on discussions with Racing Beat staff, the Mazda source code doesn't show a lot of differences between a US an a Canadian. Since i will be a "beta tester" i'll let you know if my car lights do not start automatically anymore...
Cheers.
u lucky bastard!
Can you tell them we need a flash on the automatic too?
:>
lets hear the update soon!!! Happy new year!
Let us know how it turns out bro!
I am too interested in it for the auto tranny

-=drift=- 01-01-2007, 11:37 PM Good times, will it have to be sent to Rb, or will a place like Mazdees or Khan do it?
Agent008 01-02-2007, 09:33 AM This is good news indeed.. Didn't think that the Canadian market would be worth it for RacingBeat to even try to get this on the Canadian spec ECU.
RotaryPhil 01-02-2007, 01:20 PM Here's some initial feedbacks:
Install & reinstall:
Easy to do and takes 10-15 minutes (without any mecanic knowledge). The instructions are straight forward. Nothing else to say.
Ignition & electrical:
At start up, there is no noticeable differences. All my canadians settings are functioning normally as they were before. Idle was also very stable throughout the warming phase.
Road test:
I could'nt notice any particular gains from 1kRPM to 7000 RPM. But above that range, the engine pulls evenly until the cut-off (approx 9,200 rpm). This gain is very noticeable. I could'nt confirm if the new fans settings. They both now starts at 10c lower than the original specs (it was -5c in montreal today...).
More feedback will be given in the next coming days.
Over all, i can say that this mod is great addition to the RB intake & catback
Reply to previous posts:
- Racing Beat did the flash upgrade themselfs. I have no information that they will outsource this service to canadian resellers.
- Availability for AT rx8? No idea, but i dout it since the most gains at between 7k and 9,3k.
Cheers to all.

Cant wait to hear more, enjoy.

Zoomby_U 01-08-2007, 04:37 PM Hello Phil,
Thanks for the feedback ... though I have a two questions:
1) I assume you sent your PCM to them? How long did it take to send and get back?
2) Any diff in fuel consumption that you can see?
Cheers,
Zoomby_U
RotaryPhil 01-09-2007, 01:20 PM Zoomby_U,
The delivery took about 3 days thru ground shipping (30us$). However, when you sent it, don't forget to insure it for 1-1,5k$ and to put the mention "Test unit" or "To be return to sender"... or else i don't know if the customs won't add taxs to your attention...
For the fuel economy, i haven't notice any changes so far. But usually my car is stored during winter time, so due to the cold weather, i was to expect some lowered mpg numbers.
ps. I got a meesage from Jim Langer yesterday that the PCM Flash for 2004&05 will be available thru their website!
Cheers to all,
Phil
Gyro_Bot 01-20-2007, 12:53 AM I'm really curious about this Flash PCM feature mentioned.
- Some sort of software upgrade?
- Climate enhancement to match Canadian temperatures?
- General performance enhancement?
I would love to hear about this,
Cheers!

Gyro_Bot,
I am not an expert in this field... I would refer you to the Racing Beat site for all the details. Their site has all the details on this tune. Regarding the climate enhancement, i think RB left the same settings as the US specs cars (lowering both fan temp by 10c) which you will benefit during during your hot summer days! Also, look in the Performance Forum and there is a detail thread on this matter.
However, i can state that it is a reliable tune for the Rx8.
Cheers,
RotaryPhil.
Skiptomylue 01-20-2007, 10:27 AM i dont know why they wouldnt offer it to the canadians.. our specs cant be that much differnt, and im sure its not really that big of a hassel to swtich stuff or even keep the info on the computer, half of it is jus thte cooling fan od, which works on all cars...

Skiptomylue, the PCM flash service is now available for 2004-05 Canadian specs Rx8.

Skipt,
You have to insure the PCM shipment for around 1.5k$ (those things are very expensive at the dealership...). The only problem with Canada Post, is that you can only insure them for 1000$. This is the courier that I took (i think UPS and FedEx will insure them above 1K$.)
And yes, the rev limiter take effect around 9600rpm :ylsuper:
Hope this help.
ps. I am still pleased with flash and NO issues.
Regards,
Phil
terrypk1 01-21-2007, 06:15 PM damn i am gonna get mine worked out NOW><. sending it this week for sure. haha.
Skiptomylue 01-21-2007, 09:51 PM wait.. i dont get it... so.....i havt o pay 1.5K for this to get sent? i havnt ever sent anything like this across the boarder..
Renesis_8 01-21-2007, 09:56 PM 1.5K is the cost of the PCM... you wanna insure it at 1.5K incase it gets lost or broken...
I dont know how much it costs to send it, I am guessing its around $100? for the fastest service. (you dont wanna be without the PCM for very long i assume)

StealthTL 01-21-2007, 10:33 PM Just send it regular Canada Post Airmail, and insure it for $1000 (someone said above, the max is $1000)
Be sure to mark it as "for repair and return" or "for service" and be SURE to keep the mail receipts, if CBSA (Customs) charges you duty on the return trip, you'll need the proof it was sent out to claim it back.
