View Full Version : Who has a PS3 here
nycgps 12-02-2006, 10:10 AM Who has one ?
Im getting 2 more. cuz I have diff TVs all over the house, and its cheaper than a standalone blu-ray player.
Games aint that game however, at least not the games that game out with the systems.
What ya games think ?
caskstrength 12-02-2006, 10:14 AM I gamen't gamed any psg games game.
mysql101 12-02-2006, 10:19 AM It's not a good blu-ray player. So you're wasting your money. You can buy a stand alone player for less that has better output.
Terrance26 12-02-2006, 10:45 AM I'm with mysql101 on this one, anybody remember how easy the dvd player broke or went out on the ps2, it was ridiculous.
mysql101 12-02-2006, 11:29 AM some details.
Sony has confirmed that the PS3 has no internal scaler as part of its hardware that can upconvert 480p/i or 720p content (whether a standard-def DVD or a PlayStation game) to 1080p/i. That leads to two separate issues. First, if you have a 1080i-only HDTV, it is up to your monitor to upconvert the 480p/i or 720p output from the PS3 to 1080i. While that puts the PS3 a rung below most next-gen disc players, which usually upconvert lower-res sources to at least 1080i, I don't know if it's a true deal breaker for me. Far more problematic is if you set the PS3 to 1080 mode to interface with your 1080p/i-only monitor, the PS3 can only downconvert 720p content to 480p. This is not a huge problem for owners of 1080p sets, as I can't think of one that doesn't accept a native 720p source and upconvert it to 1080 internally. However, there are a wealth of 1080i sets out there that will not accept a 720p signal, so if you are the owner of one of them, you're going to be confined to 480 downconverts.
SayNoToPistons 12-02-2006, 12:56 PM Can i chill at your place?
Rhawb 12-02-2006, 01:02 PM Some more potential incentive to buy a PS3. (http://games.slashdot.org/games/06/12/02/1648207.shtml)
Still not sure I want one, but at least it seems like they're blowing up less than the PS2s did when they first came out.
WhiteDealershipRice 12-02-2006, 03:20 PM I'm still platyng GT4 and Tourist Trophy almost weekly on my GEN1 PS2 (the big one with the slide out tray for the disks) although I've considered getting a GEN2 just so I can take it with me more easily (the GEN1 had made 3 trips to Iraq with me, I use it with a little LCD screen from a portable DVD player, But it takes a whole lot of room to pack it with me when I take it)
I have held off of getting a PSP just because they refuse to release GT portable. and will probably not buy the PS3 untill at least a year and a half because that way the hype will have died down and the prices will go down.
However, if the trend of "pay-as-you-go" games catches on on the PS3 I will not buy it.
I will also not buy GT5 if I then have to pay even more to unlock cars/tracks.
I refuse to pay SONY (or anyone else for that matter) $50+ just for the oportunity to pay them even more to be able to use the features of a game I supposedly purchased
I think that is BULL$H!77
Discuss!!
nycgps 12-02-2006, 03:34 PM I know its not going to be as good as a stand-alone blu-ray player even today, but what Im thinking is, since I have a 1080p tv now, I can *live* with the PS3's blu-ray player now, and *buy* a REAL blu-ray player maybe in a year or so, I think a year from now the blu-ray players out there would be better and more reasonable (price wize)
I dunno about others but I have a REAL first gen PS2, the SCPH-10000 Japanese version. I used to use it to play dvds and now only games. Still works. no problems at all :) maybe im lucky
Lets talk about PS3's games? I think the first batch really sucks. RR7, looks the same as the Xbox version unless you turn 1080p on. Resistance, not as good as COD3. Tony hawk .... nothing special. and Gundam Target in sight .... skip frames like crazy, and only the gundams looks pretty, the background look like some half-assed shit.
but I guess all system's first batch of games are like that, PS, PS2, Xbox, Xbox360, GC ....
BigOLundh 12-02-2006, 04:23 PM I will also not buy GT5 if I then have to pay even more to unlock cars/tracks.

Discuss!!I'm pretty sure it was GT HD that was pay-to-play and not GT5. I think GT5 is slated as a normal title....
BTW, have you read this yet? (posted above)

WhiteDealershipRice 12-02-2006, 04:41 PM Yeah, I speed read it, and thought the comments on the bottom were part of the actual article. Serves me right for not reading the whole thing. It would be cool to download GT HD for a quick fix and Yes, I'm still hoping GT5 will be a normal title. still if you wait 6mo+- the prices usually come down so that is my plan for the PS3/GT5
BTW,
what are the chances that GT portable will ever come out? (since that is the only reason I haven't gotten a PSP and probably won't untill it comes out--YES I am a GT whore)
MadRonin 12-02-2006, 10:39 PM Still not sure I want one, but at least it seems like they're blowing up less than the PS2s did when they first came out.I don't understand this. I bought my PS2 the day it came out; never had one problem with it. It was my only DVD player for years before I bought a progressive scan player. Never had a problem playing DVDs. I was playing Lego Star Wars on it this afternoon.

I guess it depends on your *luck*, just like everything else.
Someone will get a lemon no matter how perfect it is. Just like Rx8. :)
Im happy with my PS3 now, Games aint that great.
I think GT HD comes with only like 6 tracks and 30 cars on the disc, if you want more you would have to pay for it online :( Thats really gay if you ask me. consider how many cars are there in the last GT ? 471 I think ?
toxin440 12-03-2006, 07:14 PM haha PS3 - biggest piece of crap from Sony yet!
No I don't have Wii either :)

Problem with PS3 games right now is that sony didn't release the full coding structure to game MFg'ers, so basically the game quality is not much better then a PS2 running at 720p
But the PSP isprobably going to be the last Play station consule i ever buy. Unless if there is some kind of huge improvmnt soon, i think i'll take the same money and buy both the Wii and the x-box 360 live before the PS3
Feras 12-04-2006, 08:59 AM i think im a total consumer whore, i got the 360, this week im getting a wii and just because there are gonna be sony only games im getting a ps3.
deamicls 12-04-2006, 01:19 PM I was able to play the PS3 at best buy the other day. The game they had displayed was a Dakar style race with bikes, trucks, buggies and such. The game only looked 'OK' and the frame rate was abysmal when you had more than 3 cars on the display at once.
As someone already mentioned it looks like they just increased the resolution and added higher res textures and that's it.
I don't own any of the current consoles other than an xbox but I'll pick up a wii once those become more available.
Fact remains that PC is and always will be the best gaming platform.
BigOLundh 12-04-2006, 04:01 PM I think the OP was asking who here has a PS3, not another PS3 debate thread... then again this one hasn't got as intense as the other.
in regards to that.
i dont have a ps3... yet!!!
jisoo26 12-04-2006, 04:33 PM I don't have a PS3 yet, probably won't get one either. If the blu-ray player isn't even comparable to a regular blu-ray player then I'd just be paying extra for a game machine. Wasn't Sony's original point of this thing to be an entertainment hub? For $600 (more like $2000 right now) you shouldn't have to buy another blu-ray player to watch the movies the way you expect a blu-ray player should....
Anyway I think I'll get the 360 instead. I like that the HD-DVD player is an option...if HD-DVD wins the format war then *schweet*, if not, then *schweet* lol
If blu-ray loses, well...that just sucks for people who already have one :p:
alfy28 12-04-2006, 04:53 PM i have a ps3 . right now im just playing fall of man (i decided to get it big o :( ) i like it. but im waiting for march to come out. Lair, Heavly sword, Forumla one and motor storm will be out.
moRotorMotor 12-09-2006, 04:57 PM I just got the PS3 last week and finally got a chance to hook it up last night. I bought a new 32' Samsung HDTV LCD to reveal some of the performance of the new console since all I am using now are still CRT sets. The tv is capable of only 1080i. My question is am I stuck at viewing Talladega Nights (and games) at 720p? I also tried a PS2 game and I thought I would be able to view the game in full wide screen, but I was wrong.
I figured it out. It turns out I was just stupid. It is working in 1080i now.
BigOLundh 12-09-2006, 06:44 PM just curiuos - did you get hte HDMI cable? i've seen the difference with/without the cable first hand and its definetely noticeable.

It comes with an HDMI-to-RCA jacks, but I got the full HDMI cable instead. Might as well get the best. I don't know how much difference it is when stepping down though. I would be really upset if I find out that I can't take full advantage of 1080p games/movies just because my tv can only put out 1080i.
Never mind, it isn't an HDMI-to-RCA jacks, it's an AV cable.
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 12-09-2006, 07:57 PM my gf just bought me a ps3 a few days ago. im now a proud owner of one of these bad boys.
Raptor2k 12-09-2006, 07:58 PM ....best gf ever?
Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 12-09-2006, 08:02 PM hahaha, she is. she's the one that bought me my clear corners with stealth bulbs, she even installed one of them while i did the other. i love her. :)
Raptor2k 12-09-2006, 08:44 PM Impressive

Wouldn't that make it your fault that you can't take advantage of the full 1080p since you bought a 1080i capable LCD tv????
It's like saying ....I bought a porsche GT3 and 4 new donut spare tires. Why does it handle so crappy?

You must have missed the post I made before that one. I already realised what I did wrong. It's working in 1080i now.

I've been through 3 PS2s, all of which got disk read errors. First one developed it over time, so I gave it away to a knowing party and bought a used system, same problem, got it replaced, same problem again, then just asked for my money back.
Roomie has one that's still working though, so I just use that for my FF or GT fix.
deamicls 12-10-2006, 10:03 PM You must have missed the post I made before that one. I already realised what I did wrong. It's working in 1080i now.
Lol, i'm sorry. I thought that you were complaining that your 1080i TV couldn't do 1080p. Sorry about that.
I always thought 720p looked better than 1080i anyways. Does 1080i look better to you?
Mistersql 12-11-2006, 06:33 AM I got "disk read" error messages with my 1st gen PS2 a couple of years back. I ended up opening it and cleaning the lense with a qutip and haven't had the problem since.
I dunno about the PS3. I haven't followed any of the hype so far and have no intentions of buying one for at least a year or so. The deciding factor will be when GT5 is released as well as any new GTA titles released on the PS3 but not on the PS2.
toenail 12-11-2006, 08:17 AM I'm still considering a PS3, but recently purchased an XBOX360 and the HD-DVD drive. If launch title quality is any indication, I'll wait a year like I did for the 360 and buy the PS3 system when the game developers have had a chance to make some "REAL" HD games. Same holds true for the BluRay discs. Some of the transfers were done using aweful codec and were rushed to market. Conversely, the VC-1 stuff for HD-DVD has for the most part looked spectacular. Hoping there is no extended format war. Sony has seen the light and is pressuring those in charge of film transfer to do the job right going forward. When they've had a year to catch up, some pretty good apples-to-apples comparisons can be made.
miker2005 12-11-2006, 08:30 AM was lucky enough to get a ps3 friday; walked into local eb games and they had just received a brand new 60g ps3; no waiting list so i bot it!!!;
played it all weekend, no issues at all never turned it off hardly; my xbox was bombing up from day one!; playing tiger2007, callofduty3, resistance:fallofman, and madden;
of all games, resistance is the best; super cool, kindof a ripoff of halo and a bit of half life but still really good;
graphics on all games are great and are super on a highdef setup which i dont have yet but will get soon;
alfy28 12-11-2006, 11:53 AM i have a ps3. atm im playing Fall of man. march seems like a good time to get a ps3 due ot more games.
and GT HD will be a free demo late december for the japanese. but if you make a user account and use the region as hong kong you might get it sooner then the US date. also its free from what i hear. here is a good read up for the blue ray on the ps vs other blue ray out in the market http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/hd-dvd-bluray/1927/shootout-3-blu-ray-disc-players.html

Haha, no worries. Yes, for some reason I think Talladega Nights look better at 720p than at 1080i. I thought I was the only crazy one who think this.
SoFL_RX8 12-11-2006, 12:25 PM I had a ps2 system that I got on the second shippment of launches back in 2000 or 2001 (cant remember) and I used the leave the thing on for DAYS at a time, never had one single issue with it. To this day it still plays DVDs, games, and CDs just as well as it always did. I treated my system, for all intensive purposes, like complete crap, and it never stopped working less than perfect.
I now have a PS3, and have 0 complaints. Although the games are not 'WOW!' impressive yet, they are only the launch titles, and the REALLY good games are to come 1, 2, 3 years down the lone when the capability of the CELL processor is actually being used.
Call of Duity 3 for PS3 is only running at approx. 20% of the PS3s processing capabilities... so you must imagine what games will look like when they are demanding more power of the system.
This is where PS3 will outshine 360 very soon. XBox will reach a plateau in its graphics and processing speed YEARS before PS3 will reach its full potential. I predict that in 3 years Xbox games will not be able to compete with PS3 games anymore due to simple lack of processing ability, and you will see Microsoft releasing another console (or expensive processor upgrade) far before Sony even has to think about their next gen.
I never even considered buying a 360, and now that I have my PS3 I know I was right for not giving Microsoft the time of day.
alfy28 12-11-2006, 12:46 PM I love motorstorm Demo btw.

sad thing is that EA interview stated they only used 20% of the ps3 power on the games that are out.

Elara 12-11-2006, 08:54 PM The PS3 I got for my husband got here today. He's having a hard time deciding if he wants to sell it or keep it- those of you with them, what do you think so far?
And no, I don't want to hear "you should get a Wii instead!" because I bought him one of those last week, and he's already addicted to Zelda. I just want to know what people think of it so far, and if anyone has any comments above what they've already posted.
