My coolant warning light comes on intermitently , i have checked coolant levels and everything is fine , on a tread in the Teck section others have mentioned similar concerns .

I believe this to be a faulty floating sensor in the water tank , has anyone addressed this before and does anyone know of a fix for it , a part number and a DIY FIX would be neat .

Funny you should mention that, I just picked up my car from the dealer today to solve this very issue. It's also funny because tomorrow I hand the car back to pick up my new one.

Anyway,

About 4 months ago it was noticed when driving down along the freeway from Murray Bridge to Adelaide that the coolant light came on. After pulling over and waiting for the radiator to cool down, the cap was opened only to see the level was fine.

From this point, the problem became more and more prevalent - always at high speeds in a straight line. Going around a bend or slowing down would make the light go off.

The problem slowly got worse, however, such that the light would come on when travelling at a constant 60 kph.

I took it to the dealer (when still under warranty), and they found a loose clamp on a hose. Case closed.

Only it wasn't and the problem was still there.

So I took it back (warranty has since lapsed) late last week, and they confirmed the car had a sticky sensor. Because I reported it under warranty, Mazda Australia have treated this as a warranty issue - all parts and labour were covered. Good thing too - since they also noticed that my radiator was damaged and had a (very) slow leak.

The service sheet reads :

CHECK COOLANT LIGHT COMES ON. COOLANT LEVELS OK.
CAR NOT OVERHEATING.
REPLACED COOLANT LEVELS SWITCH.

CHECK RADIATOR LEAKING.
R&R RADIATOR AND REPLACED TOP RADIATOR TANK DAMAGED

MZN3H1-15-350H TANK SUB RADIATOR

Big Ups to Mazda Australia for fixing the radiator for free, when outside the warranty period, I imagine it has saved me hundreds of dollars.

Hopefully Mazda has sorted out some of the niggly hiccups of the earlier models :dunno:

Bad news Michael. I've just checked my version of the Mazda EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog), and the sensor is not available as a separate part. You need to buy the full sub-tank.....the same bit dbb had replaced under warranty.

His part number was N3H1-15-350H (TANK SUB RADIATOR). Your car originally came fitted with a -350F tank, so you can see there have been a few revisions/improvements since then.

There is a -350J on cars built after July 05.

There is some good news. It shouldn't cost you over $600.... ;)

Spoke to my trusted local Mazda Dealer , apparently the problem with the sub radiator tank is that it gets cracked ( HAIRLINE ) due to the heat and pressure its under .

The mounts the sub tank is sitting on seem to be part of the cause .

Seems they have carried out this job on various RX8 , cost for parts $ 327 + fitting ;)

Checked my Tank sub radiator no leaks or damage apparent , so i believe the fault could lie in the actuall sensor or the connector that sits on the left of the tank .

Hey guys, ive just purchased a 04 rx8 with 48k bout month half ago, surprise surprise the coolant light keeps comin on has got progressively worse over the last week, now it comes on almost evry drive and is staying on more now.
It really sounds like a very common problem, its always full so much so that i blows abit from the overflow, other than that it doesnt overheat or anything
so i might just disconnect the bugger.....great car but bloody tempermental...

Is there an echo in here? That is stupid, it costs more than a whole new reservoir with the factory sensor in it.

ok guys not that this has anything to do with the sensor... but my 04 mazda rx8 had some front end damage due to a tree falling over the highway during a storm... i took it to a guy to have fixed and he "fixed" it and returned me the car 5 weeks later... i pull out of the shop and notice that all my lights were on (abs, check engine, airbag, traction control, coolant, and of course the fuel light :) lol ) but i called the guy and explained to him that he did not fix the mechanical issues that were damaged... no keep in mind i got the mazda 100,000 mile warranty engine and tranny less than 5,000 miles ago... and i took it to his shop and left it there for a few days and came back and the only thing he did was buff the car and said he fixed it... he didnt... so i was driving down the road all of a sudden the temp gauge sky rocketed but i had just put water in it... and the oil pressure dropped from normal to nothing at all in the blink of an eye... smoke was every where and the smell of antifreeze and oil filled the car up.... mazda has the car now and my insurance is getting involved... curious on what the damages could be and does this come out of my pocket?

^..............very strange place to put this post, but sounds like you will be getting a new engine unless the decide to try and play the angle that your mechanic is a retard.

my phone wouldnt let me do it any where else but here idk lol wierd i know i am sorry lol and i think that i will end up having to get a new motor but who is supposed to cover the cost of that?
