I just got back from Germany last night. Was in Koln and driving on the Autobahn waz thrilling. Cars were going about 250km/h (155mph). Roads were broad and free. I wish I had my RX8. Did not see any 8's though. Lotsa BMW and benz. Also lots of little cars and really fuggly cars too. They all got one thing in common...speed.
I use to think the Autobahn was a closed course where u can drive as fast as you can. Autobahn in German means Highway. All the Highways are like that. Some have posted speed limits of 130km/h (80mph) but no one even looks at them. The slowest can on the right lane may be going atleast 150km/h. My max was 170km/h (105mph). They say driving on the left most lane is like putting your life on the line.
Germans never pass on the right...if you are in their way, they keep flashing you and seriously tailgaiting you until you give way. Anyone experienced driving in Germany?

I was on the autobahn last month but unfortunately I was on a bus. It was cool seeing ferraris and benz's just blow by you though. I also took the ICE and in some places it would be parallel to the highway and you would see cars keeping up with the train at
230+ km/h.

I've been on the autobahn. To be honest, it didn't seem much different from any other highway except one or two cars that were going much faster than everyone else. Then again, I'm sure it would've been more thrilling in a real car, rather than riding in a van.

I spent 10 months on a site assignment a few years ago located in Stendal about 180km west of Berlin. Yes you can drive without limits but that's only on the main highway and even then you get a lot of speed limit posting to have you reduce your speed to 130km and lower is certain areas so you don't get to go without limit for too long (more than 30km). This of course is my experience in and around 250km radius of Berlin. The car I had topped out at 160km so I couldn't really drive in the left lane. You can still do 120km in the right lane without feeling like you are going too slow.
Since I was in the east part of Germany, they still have those old Russian cars (Lada maybe I'm not sure) that were rigged to top out at 40km and it's dangerous as hell to run into them on the secondary highways. If you don't pay attention they really come up on you fast...damn dangerous but they are still legal. It's like owning a moped, you don;t need a liscense to drive.

I lived in Germany (Stuttgart) for 2 years. After the novelty wore off, I found myself driving at 70 mph most of the time. I did a couple "speed runs" on the Autobahn south towards Singen... lotsa fun. :)
Several things you learn fast. If you're in the left lane and a car a half-mile behind you flashes its lights, move over NOW. If you don't move over, you might get nailed. If a cop sees you not moving over for faster cars, you can get a ticket for it. (I wish they did that here!) And you NEVER want to piss off a German cop!
I liked driving in Germany mostly because the German drivers are consistent and considerate. They all drive well, and they don't do stupid things nearly as often as some drivers in the US.
