but Gears will be better than halo 3... no doubt in my mind.. gets better reviews than both halo and halo 2 ;) O well.. im a PS3 luvr n e wayz... eeez gonna beat it all

Part of the problem with h1 and halo2 was that the hype was way too much to live up to. gears had hype, but not quite as much as h1 and 2. I think that halo3 will be awesome with some of the things they are adding. BTW, I'd be willing to bet that we'll see more SPARTANS in H3. but they are gunna be SPARTAN-III's, not SPARTAN-II's.

back to gears... i am very fond of the cover system that is being used and the grenade system as well. you get the arc and even the bounce arc of the grenade toss. sweet, no more wasted grenades!

One of my co-workers on the mainland took the day off to play this. I just called him, and he was saying the graphics are great, gameplay is great, online cooperative play is great, and 0 load time is great... but he said the plot totally s*cks.

Unlike what the trailers were showing... there isn't a well developed story line. From what he said they just drop you right in the middle of the game with no background info. I was thinking later on there would be flash back cut scenes explaining it... but he said he was near the end of the campaign and still no story.

and Halo 3 sales will blow gears of war out of the water. Gears of War will still a ton of copies, but to compare it to what will probably be the best selling game of all time... no, theres no comparison.

well halo2 did sell 9.5 million copies before it was even released. kinda hard to top that. As far as background info, the reviewers in the link I posted said the same thing. they dismissed it as no big deal cause they figured the background stuff was gunna go in future games. Me? I say that they had a hard time with putting a good plot in cause they have been doing unreal tournaments which involved no plot.

This game looks pretty cool. It's pretty obvious they borrowed the viewpoint and motion from Resident Evil 4, and added in some camera bobbing - which is great in my book. Very slick...I'll probably make someone let me play theirs since I don't want to buy a 360.

Yeah i picked the game up at lunch and played it for a little while.
Very good graphics, and what not.
Going to be a very good time co-op.
Story is week but i really never care about that anyway.

I went to 1 best buy and they didn't have it, their site said the other 5 in a 50 mile radius did have it, but I just ended up ordering it instead, it's like a 2 week wait from them but I really don't care that much.

I tried EB games and they are getting in a shipment in today (yay!) and Walmart. EB was out and Walmart just said they they didn't have it. plus the guy says to me "Someone else asked me that today." my response: "Um, yeah, cause it looks freaking sick!" my goal is to have it by the weekend...

I didn't preorder or anything and i called last night to a Gamestop that was 5 miles away and they had copies laying around. This is one of the few xbox 360 games i ACTUALLY paid for, most other stuff i Just rent/copy/burn.

It's a VERY nice game - graphics are top notch, only thing im having to get used to is aiming on a finger joystick. I'm used to super precise mouse gaming on the PC with BF2142. Havent sampled the multiplayer yet but I'm sure its great.

I just picked it up this morning after all the shipping issues that Gamestop/EB and Circuit City had with FedEx yesterday. It's a fantastic game, and I'm typically not a fan of shooters. Only thing I'm having trouble with is wrapping my brain around how to approach the game - I keep getting smoked because I go running, guns blazing, into battle only to get rocked. Then if I try to go all Rainbow Six and stay stealthy, the rather sharp AI will flank me or just plain old sneak up on me and beat me down. I need to strike some kind of balance - so far I'm loving it though. Four stars! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

If your talking about marvel ultimate alliance, it's pretty impressive and fun. My gf even liked it, and that's unheard of.

Ya know, that's actually the way I intend to play the game, only difference is I can't seem to get the guy to run from cover to cover so effortlessly. He always either dashes to another location, only to go diving and then stand up in the middle of heavy fire or he doesn't run and just gets destroyed before getting to any cover at all. I'm probably doing something wrong, but the whole cover thing seems like it could use some sensitivity tweaks.

Okay, so I'm at this part where we're assaulting a machine gun nest head on and it's REALLY bringing out a glaring flaw in the gameplay. It's simply WAY too easy to make your guy move away from cover. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've been killed now because Dumbass decides it's time to stand up and do a "look what I can do" for the enemy in the middle of a machine gun assault. If he's not doing that, he'll just magnet on to a piece of "cover" that's actually fully exposed, thus causing me to die instead of run behind the real cover I was intending to reach. It's getting pretty old already, I hope this doesn't become a bigger problem as the game progresses.

I haven't had that problem. (I picked it up yesterday) The roadie run is really useful in this situation. If ur guy does magnet to a piece of cover, just let go of the stick and hit a. he'll stand back up and you can reposition. Also, at that part, if you go to the right, you can flank the nest pretty easily. I did die a few times during that part, but it was usually when I was trying to save one of my guys. The hardest part (I'm playing on casual so I can get the feel of the game) is the beserker. just wait till you get to that part.

Oh yeah, the game is amazing. I freaking love the chainsaw bayonet.

i got gears of war also - I got to like level four I think - maybe five - add me if u guys wanna play - I am ruru - playing co-op on hardcore - played first ranked last night and won - it was fun - u get an acheive for playing your first game and if u take high score of all players u get another one - :D - two acheive first ranked - I like that - I also like how u get two acheive for each level - one for hardcore and one for casual - cannot wait to try insane - also - if u r having trouble with pulling off walls -play with u cam angle a bit...if u get used to adjusting it to where u are a true right left move it makes it less simple to pull yourself off......the biggest flaw would have to be the multi menu system - god that thing sucks.....u cannot change gametype without a new session - what monkey made that - otherwise this game is sweet.....

Oh yeah, that leaves me with one gripe. The aiming is quite slow to move while using the left trigger to actually aim. I bumped it up to high before I shut it down yesterday. I'll see how it works tonight.

agree on co-op - the multi is kinda weak - co-op is fun but short - multi menu is a joke - gametypes are fun but get old - this is no where near halo quality but this is a very fun game - multi is fun it just has a lot of flaws - the menu being the main one - also a lack of gametypes and we could have at least done 12 players - hopefully we get a patch to make it a bit better......

almost to insane - almost done with hardcore.......msg if u wanna play...

Bumping the aim speed is helpful, but still not quite as fast as I would like. I'm still playing on casual. I hafta say that the bow is freaking sweet. I'm currently on the train fighting a boss, and I'm not sure how to kill him. little help?

He is actually the final boss. You have to shoot him when the kryll is not surrounding him. The best weapon to use is the machine gun and just aim for his head. Stay near the light so the kryll don't attack you and when he comes near you run like hell but stay near the lights.

I do this with every game I play. I play through the easiest difficulty to get a feel for the game and find out what I have to do to defeat bosses, etc. Then I bump up the difficulty.

Has anyone found all the COG tags? I found a miserable 10/30.

Random update:

Gears of War was not able to topple Halo 2 from top played online xbox game. I believe it came in second. I guess we'll see how long that holds, it's only been out for a week. I personally comment on which is better multiplayer wise, but I will at some point.

I don't think there will be many people years down the road playing this one. It's awesome and the graphics are great, but I don't think it's got the variety and (I don't know how to describe this) open-ended (?) gameplay of the Halo series.

For example, in Halo, if you knew the levels well enough, you could hop around and get some good ambushes and there were lots of ways to approach a battle. In this, it seems more like you're just running from cover to cover and you're not left with a whole lot of options unless you're playing with a good team who will actually execute a battle strategy.

Oh, and hint about the COG tags - keep an eye out for the red Gears logo painted on the walls. I haven't confirmed it yet, but it seems that whenever I see those, there's a COG tag near by. Also, if there's ever any question always try and go the direction that would seem to NOT be the way you need to go. I've found lots that way.

I think I suck at this game. I have only been playing it for a little while though, first turned it on yesterday.

Is there any way to get more health? I should also read the manual. Is there anyway to jump over walls without having to hold "a" and then press "a" again?

no and no. lol.

your health replenishes. if the red gear isn't in the center of the screen, you're at full health. Epic perposely put no jump button in the game because in a real combat situation, people don't jump around. Stay low, not high. Keep under cover. don't run and gun. stop and pop.

well, i've been playing this game since release day. my brother and i have played through most of it coop as well as single player.
I'm working on my Cog tags. So far 25 of 30 done.
There's a ton in stage 1 and after that they spread them out more. (12 if I remember correctly), 7 in stage 2 and 6 in stage 3.
Multiplayer doesnt have as many options as halo 2, but it's still a LOT of fun. the game is the best game for 360 to date and will be a very strong candidate for game of the year.
As far as playing with a mouse and keyboard goes, no. The game was designed for the controller, more so even than halo was. If I had this game on my PC, i'd still want to play with the controller.
Coop is so much better than single... dom is so dumb in single. he loves to get killed.

I just beat the final boss on casual last night. I agree, Dom does like to get killed. He lasts about 30 secs in the boss battle. I did find something out though. If you chuck a grenade at him, when it blows up, the kryl scatter and you can get an extra shot at him. I took him out with nothing but the sniper rifle. took about 8-10 shots. If your fast enough, you can get about 3 shots out before the kryl get back to him. In fact, I kinda got lucky cause he never came close to me.

Like I said before, I always start at the easiest to go through everything the first time. If I can know what's going on and what to do, I then go to the next difficulty. Could I have started at "Hardcore"? Probably. But here's the thing, when you're worried about dying, it's hard to enjoy the scenery.

Alright I am bringing this thread back. I got this game for Christmas after all my friends were always playing it. I am a big Halo 2 player, but this game is awesome. The online play is great too. I am thinking I am becoming addicted. It also doesn't help that I also got a new LCD HDTV for my room and so now the graphics are 1000 times better than on a regular TV. Anybody else play this on a regular basis?

Gears alone makes the 360 worth it IMO. I really hope other stuff comes out for it that I like though. :O I really hope the Resident Evils and Silent Hills come out on it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The only problem I have with Gears is it's not very long. :(

it's a bitch.

you can use the troika, but you have to scatter the kryll first with a nade (or torque bow, etc). When the kryll are swarming around him, he's invulnerable.

You can kill RAAM without the troika, you just gotta disperse the kryll first. Also, try and stay in the light, RAAM sends the kryll around him periodically after you, and if you're not in the light, you're toast.

yup. was a good time.

we had a round last night on the train level. I had the hammer and the enemy had a torque bow. He shot me with the torque bow, but I whipped out the hammer and before the bow exploded I killed him and won the round. It was damn near perfect.

lol nice. I kept trying to shoot the sniper while moving which causes the shot to go way wild. I would've had at least 5 more headshots that night if it didn't. kept pissing me off. I was all like "haha! gotcha bitch! *fire* ah, WTF??!!!" then I'd get chainsawed from behind...

Ranked games are suppose to use "Trueskill" this is the concept to get you to play with people your own level. If you play unranked its random. Trust me, again i was on the phone for 30 minutes with live support last night, this is the only way. I wouldnt be asking people to give me negative feedback if it wasnt the ONLY way to finally play with people on my own level.

The way the "Rep" or "star rating" on xbox live is calculated is based apon gamers rating you not your kills/killed ratio. Since i beat gears my rating is 4 stars, but in online play im 2 stars if best. However since no one has actually taken the time to "rate me" as a player, my rep stays at 4 stars and i keep getting thrown in the gamers who play a ton. I have literally been killed 70 times and only had 2 kills of my own. Again, through some error in trueskill logic my rating is not going down allowing me to play with people on my own level. I called live support and there is no backdoor to lower my rating manually, the woman said the only way is to actually ask for formal feedback saying im not good.

Ok apperently people arent believing me. The player rating system is based upon feedback from players, NOT STATS. II HAVE 2 kills and have been killed 70 times! Since im not getting negative feedback my rating is staying high (4 stars), thus i keep playing people above my level. No matter what you quote from the sight, this is how it works, i was on the phone for 30 minutes last night with a MS rep. Im am playing ranked matches, but without negative feedback my rating does not go down. Rather then trying to convince me that myself and the MS rep are wrong, actually believing me and giving me negative feedback would be prefered.

The weak point in the Tueskill logic is the fact that people are lazy and generally dont give feedback of the other player, how many of you actually have given feedback. And by feedback i mean formally, not just telling them they suck over the headset. I wouldve never guessed it to be so hard to have people cooperate and fill out a 2 second rating so that i can play people of my own level.

OK, read this. specifically under matchmaking. since you're prolly very new at the game, then you have to play more to get you "down to your level". you prolly still have the uncertainty factor in it. why don't you play with friends first to try to get better before you hit up the ranked matches?

Also, did you know if you get a bunch of negative feedback from us, you will be matched with just cheaters/teamkillers? seriously, you don't want that.

Dude, i know how it works i spent a half hour last night talking to a rep. I know you just want to say your right, but can you just execpt this and help me out so i dont just give up becuase im not having a fun time at all. I understand the algarithim. I hadnt account for the "holier then thou, im right your wrong" mentality of the general gamer nerd, but this was the only way the MICROSOFT CUSTOMER SUPPORT REP said to get it down.

Again you can quote all you want from websites but im quoting actual help representatives and MY OWN RATINGS. Im fairly sure you have spent at least 5 times as long telling me im wrong and offering helpless critisism instead of actually being a good forum member and helping someone so obviously needs it if they are going through the degrading effort of asking people to give them negative feedback on xbox live

IF you want me to say your right here you go, YOU ARE RIGHT. IS that better, can you please just stop trying to covince me that i made all this up and give me some feedback in the form of a rating rather then just assuming i havent done any homework before posting this.

As far as the "play more" advise, im almost done hardcore and a computer program acts way more different then a random person, it doesnt work. If anything playing further through the game is raising my status becuase the logic thinks i must be good to make it so far in the game.

I cannot give you negative feedback, I'm at work. I'm not doing it to prove you wrong. You and the rep are absolutely correct that us giving you negative feedback will drop your rep. Us giving you negative feedback will also match you up against cheaters/teamkillers/annoying players and will prevent you from playing with guys like us. how about this. play one of these nights with us online, and judge yourself by that. I have lots of fun playing with people I know whether I'm winning or losing. last night I was basically cannon fodder cause I was not playing well. But I had fun. In fact, I had 4 points at the end of a match. 4 points. no kills, and hardly any damage inflicted on anyone in 3 games. but I had fun.

thats funny, i actually considered buying lost planet just so i could play from day one instead of having the 3 month late start i had with gears. Well, that and the fact that it was constant crosshairs, that helps the lazy people like me.

I may actually pick up lost planet. it's a little interesting to get used to, but it's fun. I don't like that the rocket launcher has to be manually reloaded. I usually fire, and wait for it to reload and come to find out you have to press fire or reload for it to reload...

i love active reload. The weapons can be almost 2 times as strong if you get it perfect. I usually try to get off a few shots and try to get a perfect reload on my way to a position at the begining of a round. It never actually works, but one day ill get it, till then ill kepp trying.

snowrydr - You're not the only one who has difficulty with this game. When I first started playing, I too sucked balls. And not just ordinary balls....I'm talking big, huge, sweaty ones from a homeless man with AIDS. All of my friends were the same way. I think this game just takes a lot longer to get used to. I never had that problem with any other game, just this one.
Don't be discouraged. Everyone needs to spend some time sacrificing themselves to chainsaws, getting fag tagged, and having their wig split from forty miles away. It's just how the game works.
So buck up and take it with a smile! We all did. None of us had to have anyone leave negative feedback for each other. I'll add you to my friends list.

Haha, ya that was def the quote of the night. Drifter with his comment about the kid having vertically challenged ball dropping problems or something. That kid was so annoying though. My ears were almost bleeding from his girlish voice. Made me remember why I quite playing regular xbox games like halo 2.

Yeah, that kid definetly needed to be assualted in every possible way. I haven't touched Halo2 or COD 3 more than twice since I bought GOW.

Here's a few ways that those games differ and therefore the reasons why I haven't played them:

- GOW allows you to boot nasty players, or people whom you simply just don't like.
- Nothing is more satisfying than cutting your friends in half.
- Sticking people with a WWII pineapple grenade doesn't work
- No Cover?!
- GOW is rated Mature- therefore a license for me to cuss out 8 year olds.
- Why didn't Master Chief come up with the chainsaw bayonnet idea?
- Humping dead corpses is fun!
- I'm no longer a skinny 160lb doughboy, now I'm 400lbs of pure monster muscle
- No modders or hackers (yet)
- Smearing brains on the wall is an art form.

I'm sure there's plenty more reasons out there that you guys can come up with. Please post them!

Ha, those are good ones. Hmm, something I like about it is that the power weapon whores don't always win- you can outsmart them and find a way to win. Also when you beat more than 1 person when you are by yourself, it's a huge accomplishment... teamwork is everything.

I agree 100%. Since you can use cover, squeeze up against walls and peek around corners you can use almost any move that a tactical team would. As long as you play with the same people on your team all of the time, you could develop moves that would make your team almost impossible to defeat. Think about it- A normal police SWAT team uses tact and very rarely loses a man. This is because every move is preplanned, and every move of the enemy is anticipated. This game could go hand in hand with those principals.

It would take plenty of practice, and would piss off A LOT of people on the other team, but golley, that would be fun. ....or maybe I take this game thing WAY to far....
