Hey guys,

I just bought an 04 GT manual and I was just wondering how much does your gear shift shake when idiling in first or in neutral? Mine is noticeable, but maybe this is another rx-8 quark?

Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks

normal. the shifter is actually mounted on the transmission directly.

Yes, it should shake a bit at idle and flex around a bit when driving. This is common in RWD cars with transmission mounted shifters.

What's fun to notice is when you go over bumps and dips, your shifter will move up and down more than you, and you can actually see it doing that. I dunno, fun to me I guess, though I'm a nerd.

Just got mine in today for the software recall.
I asked the guy at the desk to check the driveshaft, as mine moves the tranny more than I'd like as I'm just accelerating from a light. Also, for a few minutes when the engine isn't *quite* yet warm, I can hear the rumble (having had plenty of cars with universal joints go bad, I know what they sound like!) at 60. It goes away, though.

Car has 3,500 on it, and I don't think it unusual, yet. I've got 46,500 before the warranty runs out anyway.

Oh! And they tried to sell me an oil change. At 3,500 miles. I asked for an analysis before I did it that quickly: "are the engines built so poorly?" Dealerships are about nothing but $.

If it's your first oil change you should probably change it early while the motor is breaking in. My shifter shakes, shimmies, and bounces. Just like a good girl should. It's normal.

It all depends upon the music I listening too. :bootyshak

It's normal to shake at idle.

I brought mine in for the recall with about 3000 miles on it. The service writer said "You're getting close to oil change time. Shall we just do it now? You bought the car here, so it's free."

Sweetest thing a service writer ever said to me. :)

FWIW, many of us believe 3500 miles is about the right interval for changing oil. YMMV.

My first oil change was at 300 miles. It was free and I was having the FQI done at the same time. I haven't been back to a dealership for another change yet, simply because I do all the work on my car. Of course I am known for being a bit obsessive as my car has had five oil changes and I haven't passed 10,000 miles yet.

KenFor a regular oil change maybe, but I think many would agree that the first oil change is much more important and the sooner the better.

Sorry, got off topic.

But yes, my shifter does shake too. It's normal.
