View Full Version : How rare will the RX-8 be?
Squidward 09-03-2003, 02:22 AM I'm wondering what the sales will be like for this car.. it is a niche car and I personally don't see lots of people flocking to the car.
How many RX-8 sightings have you encountered?
Icemastr 09-03-2003, 03:15 AM Considering Mazda plans to make 60,000/year (not sure if thats for the US, North American, or Worldwide market) I doubt it is going to stay rare for very long, it isn't really made to only target a small market, rather it creates its own niche, it was made to appeal to a wide range of people, thats why its a practical comfortable sports car that people can afford. If Mazda wanted to make a "niche" car, they would have made the RX-7, a small, 2 seat, uncomfortable, crazy fast, tight suspension high power sports car.
RobDickinson 09-03-2003, 04:35 AM Mazda need tomake money, there not in the rare white elephant business.
Ford have put in place a stratergy for mazda/ford which combines and resuses platforms on a 10 year(I think) rolling schedule.
The stratergy is working, mazda is pulling back into profit, and the platform sharing is going ahead.
Ford intend to make 8 or so cars off the mazda 6 platorfm, likewise the mazda 3 will use the new focus platform.
Mazda will want to sell as many X-8's as possible, and the RX-8 platform will be used in the next gen RX-7 and mx-5. Cant be any other way financialy.

The RX-8 platform will not be used for the next MX-5 (NC).
Boccelli 09-03-2003, 08:44 AM Nobody will really know till late next year. The rx8 may just drop from the world and people stop buying it.... you never know.

I agree, tough to be rare with that production target.
Red Devil 09-04-2003, 11:40 AM I read they expect to sell at least 30,000 a year in North America.
Magic8 09-04-2003, 11:55 AM I've seen more Z-8's, 3rd Gen RX-7, and NSX's then RX-8's. On the streets I not seen one RX-8, yet. Where you Cincinnati owners?
I really hope this car does well, I really want the rotary engine to continue its development. When I bought my car last week, the dealership I went to had 6 RX-8 on their lot (last I check, they are still all there.) With the prices some dealerships are charging you would think that there is a long waiting list.

RX-8 Zoomster 09-05-2003, 01:17 AM This was a no-brainer answer for me. Not many RX-8s driving around the deserts of Qatar. ;)
aussie77 09-05-2003, 08:28 AM I'm still yet to see another 8 out on the road :P Not that I mind right now - it is cool being such a rarity out there on the roads.
SARmedic 09-05-2003, 12:13 PM ZOOMSTER,

Check your PM.
350 Formula 09-05-2003, 03:19 PM I am surprised that I have not seen one on the street. It appears that there are a number of people in North Houston that are on this forum that own one.
However, I am one of those cheap people and think the price is too high. I am hoping that by next year the 'new' wears off and they start to be discounted (remember the PT Cruiser!!). I would like to replace my '87 Formula and the Mazda looks like a great replacement.
rxeightr 09-05-2003, 04:54 PM I saw, which I think was an Emerald Green RX-8 on a remote secondary 2-lane I take to work. We were going opposite directions, and I think both of us were in shock to see the other, 'cause neither one of us thought to put the binders on, and turn back around to chat.
We did get our hand-wave-off-of-the-steering-wheel to each other in time though.
This was a couple of weeks ago, and while I still use that road twice a weekday, there has been no further sightings of theirs, or any other RX-8's, which has surprised me.
Since I took delivery, I have driven to Louisville KY twice, down to the panhandle of Florida, and spent a week in Houston TX, without ever seeing another one on the street. But I'm still keeping an eye out.
rx-7~rx-8 09-07-2003, 11:05 PM i saw 2 in atlanta, while i was visiting, and this was the first week trhey were being sold. In big cities like los angeles, detriot, atlanta, you'll see alot of them. In dallas i saw only one.
