Mazda NZ head Ivan Ackeroff anounced today that Mazdas' long awaited upgrade to the RX8 will debut in New Zealand . It will be called the Mazdaspeed RX8 .
Specifications for the car are sure to get the local rotary community buzzing. Not since the Batmobile has Mazda produced a rotary with credentials sure to strike fear in the ranks of the STI/EVO communities.
The supercharged renesiss engine will produce a massive 240kw (320 hp) which Mazda says will take the car to the speed limit in 5.4s
Mr Ackeroff said the car will not be sold outside of New Zealand for at least 18 months & not into North America for another 2 years due to recent bad publicity surrounding an engine recall for the naturally aspirated Renesiss .
Aparently there has been so much whinging on a certain forum dedicated to the RX8 in the US that Mazda feels the car will be better recieved in New Zealand .

i dont know.... we dont complain that much to make mazda deprive us of the MS8. i think this is a rediculous post. Mazda knows 8 owners want more power than anything else, do you really think they would say no to us? no, it doesnt make business sense. MM Japan do not make RHD cars exclusively for NZ market, they are to Australian design specs, so, IF you get it we would.

the sad thing is that I caught rumors of a new Mazdaspeed MX-5 from a Mazda Rep at Formula D Irwindale in mid October. According to this rep, Mazda was going to drop the Mazdaspeed RX-8 because of the issues with the renisis. One ray of hope though... Mazda was looking to find a few companies, like Mazdatrix, to build and campaign a new RX-8 drift car for the '07 season. We can only hope...

My feelings exactly. Apparently there is no hope, no development, no power increases, no tweaking, no MS version. Mazda seemingly has decided to let the 8 go off quietly into oblivion just as it was born... a great handling, but comparitively underpowered sports car.

Either they can't, or simply won't develop it further because of sales numbers, gas prices, or whatever. It happened in the 70's with their rotarys - this looks like a repeat... save for perhaps a marketing driven hydrogen powered version for appearences sake. :boring:

This makes sense as the new Solstice GXP and Sky Redline are getting a lot of attention and winning a lot of comparos. Mazda needs to step up to stay viable in that market, imo. And they already have a production engine in the 2.3 ready to go.

who cares if the 8 dies or not. the car is ok. the engine is coooooooool. kabura is what i have my eye on.

I love my 8, but it needs more HP!

BS, and striking fear into the STI/EVO.....with 0-60 in 5.4 (im assuming thats what they're saying)....shit...with that much power....those times suck....keep in in new zealand if its gunna suck like that.
