View Full Version : Where are all the Austin 8's?
eccles 09-02-2003, 07:00 PM It's now almost two months since the first RX-8's left the Austin area Beasley stores, but I have still yet to see another one "in the wild"! Apart from the Texas RX's meeting last month, the only other time I've seen another RX-8 on the road was at the local gas station, where one was being fuelled up by a Mazda North employee (presumably pre-delivery).
Where are y'all hiding?
colin204 09-02-2003, 07:20 PM I am hiding down here in South Austin, lets get a hill country drive going really soon.
Colin
MaRX8 09-02-2003, 11:39 PM I'm just up the block or so from Colin also, I work in South Austin, off of (Mopac) but live up in Pflugerville...
But I'm only on the road for only a little bit during the day. Yep, I haven't seen another in the wild yet either....
My 8 is hiding up near the Arboretum. This is my first manual, so I usually take it out at night when the traffic isn't bad. When I take it out I'm usually up in the hills between Mopac and 620, and along 2222 :D.
I've seen 2 others on the road and two parked in drive ways in the last week.

Is that really true? Mine came from Mazda South, and you saw me Sunday............ (But, I don't live in the Austin area).

MaRX8 09-03-2003, 03:12 PM Anyone going up to Rudy's this Evening? It the first Wednesday of the month...

Boozehound 09-04-2003, 10:46 PM Speaking of 8s in the wild, I saw a blue one with paper tags on Burnet when I was in Austin for the game last weekend. Then I saw a titanium 8 sitting all by it's lonely in a Baptist church parking lot off of 360 late Sunday morning. Until that weekend, I hadn't seen but one in Houston (saw another in H-town that friday), and the first time I go to Austin in quite a while (feels like forever), I see two. Go figure.
joelsrx8 09-13-2003, 10:36 PM Stake out the Mopac North access road by Duval. We've got FOUR in our parkng garage now. Yellow, Blue, Red, and Silver. I think we're going to have to come up with a group shot or something.

eccles 09-14-2003, 06:37 PM I finally saw one today. If that was you in the Silver turning right from Foster Ln into Shoal Creek Blvd this afternoon... Hi!

Mine's on the parking lot next to 905. Looks like we have both sides covered. :)
IWANTMYRX8 09-22-2003, 12:08 PM Finally saw my first 8 in the wild. If you were driving a blue 8 heading east out of Bee Caves on Hwy 71 this morning at bout 0915am.....................
HI!!!!!
Skapunk 10-18-2003, 08:47 PM Alright, I just got on this forum like a week ago, and I haven't really done forums much. When I say I haven't really done forums much, I mean this is my first to actually read or post. So cut me a little slack if this questions already been asked. Do the Austin RX-8s meet anywhere, or go to a track or anything like that? I'm kinda new to the Austin area so I don't really know of anything big that happens, except parties on west campus and clubs on 6th.
eccles 10-18-2003, 11:47 PM Well, if you're up for a bit of fun tomorrow, and don't mind an early start in the morning, come on out to the Tech Ridge industrial park one block west of I-35, north of Palmer Ln.
Registration closes at 8:30am. Details, and a map to the site, at http://www.spokes.org/

I was at Tech Ridge. Your 180 degree/emergency brake move on the slalom was amazing!! So was your consistent time. Your friend on the other hand was another story. It's scary to see an 8 spin out.
On the other hand, I know what the 8 is capable of from your driving. I'm glad I decided to keep mine.

On the other hand, I know what the 8 is capable of from your driving. I'm glad I decided to keep mine. It was a fun day, though the number of alternative paths available made time comparisons a little difficult. The RX-8 felt absolutely amazing down that long slalom and back, and it was fun to try a handbrake maneuver for the turnaround - I was afraid I'd gotten a little rusty in that department.
Dan Pedroza ran one run in my car towards the end of the day, and went a second faster than I had. I truly don't believe that there was any more time to be had in the slalom on the runway, so I think he must've picked it up on the loop around the apron. Maybe he went clockwise - I didn't see that part of his run and I forgot to ask him.
Yeah, Danny's spin through the finish was a little hairy. Guess I shouldn't have told him how to disable the DSC for his first run at least!
Hope you had a good day. Next time you come out, introduce yourself! If I'd known you were there, I would have offered you a ride. :) I'll be there for the remaining events for the year, though I'll be running the wife's Miata after I return the RX-8 this week. :(
Parmer8 10-20-2003, 01:40 PM  I didn't know you could offer spectators a ride!! I should have introduced myself. We did meet a while back at Rudys, during the first RX7 / 8 meet. Next time they have the event at Tech Rige, I'm going to try it with my 8. If you're there, I'll ask for pointers.
hondas2k 10-27-2003, 02:10 PM I got to take one for the weekend and I can see why people love this car. I had a blast and didn't want to give it back today. I have had a few brief drives in them prior to this but driving it this whole weekend really sold me on it. The traction control worked well in the rain on Sunday and I went to Burnet and back on Saturday. The drive up and back was comfortable on the straight portions and a blast through the twisties and the big hill on Park Road 4 near the Longhorn Caverns. We took the big hill 4 times and it was like a roller coaster ride. The only negative thing that I found was that I was always going way too fast. I kept finding myself easily at 20 mph over the speed limit on Mopac, 183, and other major roads without realizing it.
I have not yet driven the 2004 S2000 and I also want to wait to drive the Mazdaspeed Turbo Miata, but the RX-8 has definitely made the list of possibilities for my next car.

I am really sorry that you had to turn yours in but hopefully things will turn around so you can get another one. Would you get one again or go for something else?

eccles 10-27-2003, 06:27 PM I'll be getting another exactly the same. I loved the color and the package.

Maybe next time. Or maybe we can still hook up anyway - I still have the wife's Miata, which can hold its own pretty well on Lime Creek Rd, City Park Rd, and the like. :)
McbeefyEggThing 10-30-2003, 11:46 PM Hi all... Finally I can post to this board. Also in Austin (Pflug) and I have yet to see a single other 8 in the wild, although my wife claims to have seen a few on mo-pac.
Been reading this board for a week or 2 now and just wanted to say hi.
/wave
MaRX8 10-31-2003, 12:11 AM I'm in Pflugerville also, I saw a Red RX-8 up here one morning, a lady was driving it.
I'm driving a Titanium Grey. Live over by Bohl's Place, near the HEB at 1825 & 685.
Doh! I have a titanium grey as well. I am near the texaco off of grand ave. Not that I can blame you, I thought it was the best color too :).
I went with the touring package... not a fan of leather seats during the summers here, but I wanted the sun-roof.
Whoops... also mcbeefyeggthing=lufa.
When I couldnt post for the longest time I made a 2nd account just incase something was bugged with my first account. Is there anyway to delete the 2nd account for this board?
I guess I will just let the other account fade away.
but to answer your question..."where are all the Austin 8's?"
Premier Mazada north of Round Rock they have like 30-40 in stock, should be ton more on the road shortly for the Austin area.
makeminegreen 11-07-2003, 12:10 PM I just picked up my yellow one about a week or so ago, howdy to all the other "8s", I live south and drive north everyday so if you see a yellow one with license plates that read "jus rad" that's me!
Rotary4Ever 12-02-2003, 01:13 PM No I had the first RX-8 on the IBM campus... Second or third car delivered to Roger Beasley Mazda. I thought first at IBM. I park my Silver RX-8 in the Tivoli garage. How fast can you take the Tivoli entrance road turns?
Rotary4Ever 12-02-2003, 01:54 PM Umm... Was I allowed to create an S/N That is already in use???? AHHHH!

Last_D8 12-02-2003, 07:41 PM Mine will be on the Austin streets this week...or so I'm told by
"rx8orders". They don't seem to be able to pin it down any
closer than that as the last leg depends on the route chosen
by the car transporter guys as they dropp cars off at different
locations. WHAT??? ME ANXIOUS?? HELL YA
8^)
hondas2k 12-05-2003, 05:02 PM I am driving one today.

Kirk
hondas2k 12-10-2003, 03:08 PM Well, I didn't see any other RX-8's last weekend to wave to but I sure did enjoy the car. I really love this combo so I hope I can swing one in the near future while keeping the Miata.
Kirk
Skapunk 12-12-2003, 01:00 PM Who's got the yellow one with the rims? I saw him driving on MLK right next to campus last thursday. I guess it was around 4 o'clock or so. Tried to wave but I guess he didn't see me. The car looked pretty sweet, was wondering what the rims were as I only got to see them for a second.
makeminegreen 12-15-2003, 03:51 PM the sales manager at Beasley on burnet road has a yellow one with 19s on it and tint, wonder if that was the same one?
Skapunk 12-15-2003, 09:38 PM that may have been it, there was tint and i think 19s on it, it looked real nice

budaman2 12-23-2003, 05:23 PM Any road is a good road in an 8! It's not that close to Austin, but 337 is the road of roads. Also, we need to get together at RPM. If the Houston guys can organize, we should be able to also. The GP track will be open Jan 5 -11.

535 between Cedar Creek and Smithville seems to be popular with bikers. 969 (aka MLK in Austin) to Bastrop is also good.
amartin 12-25-2003, 11:11 AM I just picked up a Blue-8 yesterday...
I'm now the proud owner of a 2 sports cars... '04 Blue RX-8 and a '02 Silver S2000.
-- Aaron
p.s. I'm mostly located in the N.W Cat-Mountain area.
AreEksAte 12-25-2003, 10:34 PM Anyone drive through the UT campus? I've seen an RX-8 of almost every color while I've been there; it's like bird-watching. Gray, Silver, Red, Blue, Black. There's even this one street on campus with a Silver RX-8 parked along the curb almost every day.

Did you by chance go see a movie at Metropolitan that day? (Christmas eve?) I saw a blue one with dealer plates there.
I'm still a wuss about door dings and took the jeep to the theater. Seeing that blue 8 really made me wish I was in mine.
amartin 12-26-2003, 05:03 PM Yup..that was me at the movie theater... I parked close to the curb, and watch the car park next to me... all was good.
I'm paranoid about dings too..however, when I do get one I use Dent-Magic on Burnet near 2222... they KICK ass and are VERY reasonably priced.. I usually pay $35-$50 per panel... ad the results are amazing.

p.s. you want the Woman that owns the place's son... she's the blond 45ish good looking woman, ask her son to do your work, he's been doing mine for about 6-7 years now.
DorkAss 12-27-2003, 11:04 PM Took delivery of my Ti-Gray Rx8 this afternoon!
I work in the Arboretum area but will be represent'n the east side (Harris Branch) :)
Skapunk 12-29-2003, 11:52 AM I think I'm the only black one on campus, at least the only one I've seen. But yeah, I've seen one of every color right around campus so far as well.
Boozehound 01-27-2004, 07:02 PM Everytime I'm in Austin (at least once a month) I usually go around / through campus on the weekends... I'll bet once football season starts up next fall there will be tons on campus during home games, and you can count me in that group. Get more engineering jobs in Austin and I'd be around that town all the time.
I, Claudius 01-29-2004, 05:10 PM I bought a blue 8 a couple of weeks ago. I'm in southwest Austin (William Cannon & Westgate area) and to date have only seen one RX-8 around Austin - a yellow one that shot by me as I was on my way to pick up my car. I took it as a good omen. I'm driving the 8 after eight years in a '95 Miata. I can't believe the room - it's great.
hondas2k 01-29-2004, 05:19 PM Congrats on your new RX-8. Try to come join some other various RX owners this weekend for a drive or next week at the meeting at Rudy's on 183. More info can be found here (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/texasrxs/) or here (http://www.texasrxs.com).

Q121825 01-29-2004, 05:30 PM Congrats! I have a Winning Blue 8 as well. Though, I'm out east. I work in North Austin.
Hope to see you at one of the club events (SA or Austin).

topdownbackroad 02-11-2004, 09:20 PM Kirk, thanks for coming 2/4 & to Roger Beasley South; your black 8 is almost as sleek as my '89 convertible. How do you put the top down ? Bring it Sun. to "Blake's" run & some Miata's too.
Larry D.
hondas2k 02-11-2004, 11:21 PM I think Steph and I will be able to make the run Sunday and I will post it to the Miata forum as well. Not sure if I will have this RX-8 since I am coming up on the mileage where I need to turn it in. I will probably drive my little black Miata if I don't get another 8, depends on whether or not we have any more for demo status.
Kirk
topdownbackroad 02-11-2004, 11:41 PM Hey Kirk, great! Like we talked about before, I could care less what kind you or anyone else brings, especially on an open run. We have MIata owner/members. It's the drive, the cars & the company. Besides, why is a '01 Miata better than a new 8 ? Answer: You don't have to use a can opener to get the top down! My motto: "who cares if it's not a convertible !" I think there will be some SC2000's too. PLease tell anyone @ Mazda S. who might be able to come. Sun.2/15 @ County Line 2222W. 12:30pm.--"Blakes" run. Thanks, LD.
hondas2k 02-11-2004, 11:50 PM If the weather is warm enough then it will actually be a nice change of pace to drive my Miata since I have been driving the 8 since I started at Mazda South. One way or the other, I will have a fun car to drive.
Kirk
