View Full Version : Retro m logo/emblem for the RX-8. Yes or No?
Squidward 09-02-2003, 01:56 PM I grabbed this from RotorBoy.
What do you think? The old school M logo for the car emblem..
I'm thinking about making an emblem to replace my current RX-8's Mazda logo.
I think it would rock, and set the car apart.. It would also turn a few heads ;)
What do you think?
Squidward 09-02-2003, 02:02 PM also, I'll probably cast a whole bunch to sell.. who here would buy one and put it on their car? and how much would you pay for something like this? It'll be made of polished aluminum or chrome plated aluminum cast. Hopefully equal to the quality of the current emblem
missinmahseven 09-02-2003, 02:29 PM The old Mazda logo wasn't quite like what you show in your post. It was a circle, white, with the bottom 1/8th or so in mazda blue, which said "M A Z D A" in slanted/italics, and above it was the 'm' logo, in silver against white.
Several Miata vendors have repros of rather high quality, I think a 2" nose badge goes for 75US$ or so.
I would love it if Mazda went back to that logo, perhaps with the modern MAZDA font instead of the slanted vintage font.
The "flying M" just doesn't do it for me :)
Frankly, I like just the plain "MAZDA" font logo much better than the "Flying M"..
How about replacing the current Mazda Logo with a Rotory logo such as the ones found on rotary center inserts for the wheels?
Lensman 09-02-2003, 03:25 PM I like the 'flying M'. It's simple and one of the better car logos in my opinion. Compare it with those of Subaru, BMW or Peugeot and it becomes an artwork!

Don't you think there's enough rotary logos on the car? rear, front, hood, wheels, seats, shift knob, etc...
missinmahseven 09-02-2003, 05:39 PM Mazda probably can't use the rotor theme in its logo (IANAL, so..) because Lancia has had a rotor-shaped logo for decades.
One reason Mazda dropped the "eternal flame" (what some wags called the Toilet Seat) because it was a little too close to the Renault diamond.
Here's the Lancia logo. (The funny thing is, I don't think Lancia ever made a rotary car..hmm.)

I'd rather have a logo with history behind it. :)
I like the BMW logo (hint, it's an airplane prop, BMW made its name making airplane engines and motorcycles.. the cars came later.) You find the BMW logo convoluted?
Mazda is on its third logo (at least.) Ford has only one, Ferrari has only one, BMW and MB have always had theirs. Changing a car company's logo is somewhat bizarre, if you ask me..
Imagine if Ferrari were to ditch the prancing horse in favor of some overly stylized 'symbol' trying to convey some nebulous concept? Or if Ford suddenly thought the blue oval with the Old Man's signature was too old, and replaced it with some hip 'in' thing?
Imo, in the 70s, Mazda should have brought the 'm' back. Other than the 'MAZDA' font, they had no logo, then they came out with the 'Eternal Flame' and now the 'owl'.
Here's the oldest Mazda logo I remember, 1960's - early 70's. This is the one I wish they'd use again :) (and it would appear I had the colors bassackwards on my original post on this subject..bleh.. must... not.. post.. without... coffee..)

KG Works makes excellent repros. (http://www.rspeed.net/miata/item.asp?dept=11&cat=22&prod=808-215)
RX-Late 09-03-2003, 11:20 AM I think I'll stick to the new badge. Its clean, sleek and modern. Just like the car.

I agree. That's why I wanted the older m logo. It is very retro..
But I don't like the blue one above.. Only the m logo in it is what I'm interested in.
I would make it in the same way the current logo is, except it would be the older logo design.
santino 09-03-2003, 01:37 PM i like the designs from Vintage Rotary Decals...
lookie here (http://vintagerotarydecals.com/stickerspage.html)
especially the one with the rotor around the M.
