NEW ORLEANS Police discovered the dismembered remains of a woman in her French Quarter apartment after her boyfriend jumped to his death from a luxury hotel with a five-page confession note in his pocket, police said Wednesday.
The dismembered body of the 26-year-old woman was found Tuesday night in her apartment above a voodoo shop on the edge of the famed tourist district, police spokesman Officer Gary Flot said.
While Flot did not release any other information, The Times-Picayune newspaper and local broadcaster WWL-TV quoted unidentified police sources as saying the woman's charred head was in a pot on the stove, her legs and feet were baked in the oven and the rest of her dismembered body had been placed in a trash bag in the refrigerator.
A woman who identified herself as Priestess Miriam in the Voodoo Spiritual Temple and Cultural Center below the apartment said Wednesday the couple had only recently moved in.
"You see people and never know what's going on with them," the woman said, adding she did not know the couple very well.
New Orleans is famed for its voodoo culture, brought over by African and Caribbean slaves. Although not widely practiced in the city, voodoo shops are a major draw for tourists who venture to the district famed for its cuisine, Mardi Gras celebration and nightlife. The French Quarter has also served as the backdrop for some of the vampire novels by writer Anne Rice, most notably, "Interview With a Vampire."
Police said the 28-year-old man leaped from the seventh-floor of the Omni Royal Hotel in the French Quarter on Tuesday night. When officers checked his pockets, they found a five-page note, leading them to the apartment and the woman's body.
