Personally, I don't think the next RX-7 should have popup headlights because they...
(1) Add weight
(2) Increase drag when up
(3) Look really dorky when one is broken and the other isn't
Nonetheless, the 3rd gen looks absolutely horrible imho when its normal headlights are replaced with non-pop-ups, so I guess it really depends on the design. And after all, it's getting to be a sort of tradition now ...

Dunno 'bout US but in Europe popup headlights are just about dead because of all the pedestrian safety laws we have now.

Hard to make pop-ups to comply with new rules.

Pop ups are unlikely due to the fact that you can't have xenon pop ups. I don't think Mazda is going to release a high-end car without at least the option of pop ups. So whether or not I would like to see them its not going to happen.

Rob already said the right answer - there will be no new cars with pop-ups from any manufacturer ever again. They do not comply with Euro pedestrian collision safety tests. It can't be an option if a manufacturer intends to sell in Europe.
