View Full Version : Colour Coded Key
Lock & Load 08-31-2003, 11:16 PM FINALLY GOT THE WELCOME PACK WITH THE COLOUR CODED KEY
When you take your key to your MAZDA dealer to get it coded if you want to use it also take your other 2 keys otherwise keys will have varies coding , and wont start your car .
Also DO NOT insert the key in the ignition of your rx8 until it has been coded as it will not start your car and may engage the immoboliser.QUOTED (LETTER FROM MAZDA )
It would have been nice to get all of the information from mazda before the welcome pack arrived and not after the event .
Those that may have tried out their colour coded keys before being warned not to could have engaged the immoboliser and had problems starting their cars .
Got my key today, tried it (knowing it wouldn't work)... fits, but doesn't start. Had no problems when I put my normal key back in though...
labrat 09-01-2003, 12:22 AM Thanks for the tip, L & L. I guess I should take in the "valet" key as well?
Winning 09-01-2003, 01:17 AM Does anyone want to sell their colour coded keys? I want another one for spare.:p :p
Lock & Load 09-01-2003, 10:41 PM Got the key coded today it only takes a few minutes , spoke to service manager OZ cars so far seem to be having less hiccups than some others .
Wildcard 09-29-2003, 03:54 AM I just coded my key, following richwu's advice. I'm a little curious though, because the process only took about 2 minutes, not 2 hours as expected. Have I done it wrong? They car starts fine with the colour coded key. It also still starts with the old key. I thought coding the colour coded key might have disabled the old ones, but it didn't.
All I'm wondering is.... is everything normal?
You must be closer to the equator, the coding process takes less time the closer you get - there's less disruption from polar magnetism...
Spin9k 09-29-2003, 06:24 AM Any pics of these 'color coded keys'? Us yanks don't get such luxuries! :(
maybe it's this...

I didn't get one - I got other goodies.

Sorry no pics at this stage , colour coded key is larger than standard issue key and ticker in width , black plastic ,on either side of key is a large rotary symbol , one side in chrome the other is colour coded to the colour of your car .
I use mine as the everiday key for my yellow rx8 , the key can be coded to start your car , others have choosen to keep as an ornamental piece.( collectable)
Personally i believe if you dont use it you loose it, and thats how i conduct my relathionship with my rx8 , i use it as often as i can .
Will .try and find photo soon i have seen one on the site possibly in the asian forum.

Thanks for the explaination (short and sweet)
msydd 09-29-2003, 07:40 AM Here's a shot of my key.... winning blue !!!
Also, don;t panic... my key only took 2 minutes too, the 2 hours was a joke I think.
Man that thing is HUUUUUGE!!!
Can you take a picture of ita against something to give us a reasonable scale, you know.......
Mazda Key <---> Empire State Building
Or are you really a vertically challenged person, with tiny little fingers :D
Hey, at least if you walk about with it in your front trouser pocket, you'll be certain of a lot of smiles!!!
msydd 09-29-2003, 07:59 AM As you wish !
msydd 09-29-2003, 08:02 AM Or for those who like something a little BIGGER...

you're too quick for me - I was just posting my pic. Here is both sides of the key (Note: I only have one key)
Phew. That's better, I was suffering a bad case of ignition key envy!!!
M-ster 09-29-2003, 09:43 AM ooohh... are you happy to see me or is that just the rotary key in your pocket?:D
Nice but man I can't imagine carrying a larger key than the current one!
I just bought a '94 impreza with keyless entry remote start and a key, the entire package is 100 times smaller!
Lock & Load 09-29-2003, 12:26 PM A good sized key if correctly held can be your best friend in a hairy situation .
Also the rotary bulge in your pocket lets the girls know you are happy to turn them on .
zoom44 09-29-2003, 03:28 PM and they know you are ready to take them for a spin;)
we have been told that we cant use that key here in the states as it doesn't work with our immobilizer. i can't think of a reason that mazda would use 2 different immobilizer systems, so now that sounds like a load of crap! i want my colour coded rotary key!!

To me it seems that your mazda dealers are totally wacko and you guys have been given the MUSHROOM treatment.(kept in the dark and feed bullshit)
We only get 1 oil cooler here in oz as opposed to you guys that get 2 , when i questioned mazda the answer was that due to our conditions we did not need one a lot of B/S imo it was merely a cost saving excersice by mazda.
Most car manufacturers treat their customers like woodducks , however with facilities like the internet we are managing to keep them on their toes.
If you want i will gladly give you my colourcoded key in exchange for 1 of your oil coolers.
richwu 10-01-2003, 02:10 AM Has anyone try to open the door with the Colour coded key??
I don't think it works... that key can only start the car but not the door.
Wizza 10-01-2003, 02:18 AM Just tried it.
Works fine to open the doors, but i can't lock them again!!
my10ae 11-08-2003, 10:11 PM So does anyone know for sure if these color coded keys don't work with US spec 8's? I would like to get one, but want it to be functional. Anyone?

oh man..
I checked my "list oh shit you can add to your RX8" I got when I first ordered my car, and it had these for AUD$88.00 + GST.
Is this something you guys ordered additionally or did you get them free?
I'm thinking I'd actually like one in Winning Blue if it's something I should have gotten for free!?

takahashi 11-09-2003, 07:17 AM You only get it free when you preorder your car --- I am about the last pre-order man to get the car as they f#$#ed up my order and I got it 5 months after I ordered it! :(

$96.80 for that key is pricy when you consider I am paying $70 for them at another Mazda dealer.
Great key for the rotary enthusiast. I actually get them modified to suit earlier Mazda's such as the Rx-7.
Shame thaey are only available in black now days...
