View Full Version : Details on Illuminated Shift Knob
MacMan 08-31-2003, 01:28 PM Here are some pictures and scans of the instructions. Unfortunately, my RX-8 is still four weeks away so it will have to wait before I can install it.
I'm still unsure if the U.S. version of this car include the shifter connections behind the front console as shown on the graphics dipicted on the instructions. Time will tell.
MacMan 08-31-2003, 01:30 PM another scan
MacMan 08-31-2003, 01:32 PM the package
MacMan 08-31-2003, 01:35 PM more
MacMan 08-31-2003, 01:37 PM a couple of more yet
MacMan 08-31-2003, 01:39 PM the last pic. I hope these help.
B-Nez 08-31-2003, 01:40 PM It appears, from the scanned instructions, that the wiring harness is a Y-splitter that connects to the connector supplying power to the ashtray light. Looks pretty easy. I was thinking of ordering this, myself. I wonder if you HAVE to replace the boot, though? That would be the biggest PITA of the entire install (still, not difficult).
Edit: Oops, sorry. Guess I should have waited until you were finished. :D
MacMan 08-31-2003, 01:56 PM The boot does have to be replaced and the new boot comes in the package. The new boot has the slot and snap in it to accommodate the wire harness from the shifter.
There is a separate boot replacement instructions for installing this new boot. Fortunately, these instructions are in english.
All other instructions in Japanese.
MacMan 08-31-2003, 02:09 PM sorry, forgot one pic
Magic8 08-31-2003, 11:44 PM This is one of first mods I want on my car, when I get it. Thanks for posting this stuff.
On a side note, wonder why Mazda never included this feature on the U.S. spec cars. Which focus group told them we don't want Illuminated Shift Knob or the color white?

RotorGeek 09-01-2003, 09:23 PM Where did you get it?
Boccelli 09-01-2003, 11:36 PM jt-imports.com has it under used and new jdm parts.
Has anybody actually installed this yet?
mrtux 09-22-2003, 12:30 AM does the whole thing just light up? does it turn brighter when on a selected gear or something?
Cannonbear 09-22-2003, 02:44 AM So this mod won't work on another car?
downshift 09-22-2003, 07:19 AM What color is the light? It's pretty cool that you can do this in a car like that. The only ones I know have it are the M series BMW's. Any pictures of it lighted up would be appreciated.
broose 09-23-2003, 09:05 PM It looks like my avatar when it's lit up.
Dookie_Rx-8 09-23-2003, 10:26 PM So this is a mazda mod or a aftermarket company mod.
mikeb 09-24-2003, 01:34 AM mazda mod
English 09-24-2003, 09:27 AM I've replaced the shifter on each of my cars before this one, and I've had problems with them holding up to wear and tear.....I'd like to see if anyone has problems with the lights breaking or the leather wearing off before I plop down $$$ for this sucka.
broose 09-24-2003, 11:32 AM Has anyone in Canada or the U.S. actually installed this yet. Is all the necessary hardware there to connect things to?

Doh. I turned off avatar and signatures because it's faster and I tend to browse the forum at work :D
Anyway, saw the picture and it looks pretty cool and it should match the color of the lights in the car at night. Thanks.

Not really. I can ship by DHL Air Express to you in France at a cost of about $25 US (21 Euros)
Stephan 11-03-2003, 04:20 AM Great News !
Just let me check the availability and prices for this part, and I will get back to you.
why is it so expensive BTW ?
All parts are wayyyy too much expensive. I know that compared to BMW or so parts it's still comparable, but who told BMW parts were right priced ;)
Stephan
Cannonbear 11-04-2003, 10:59 PM anyone try this on a diff car with the same shift pattern? like an s2k? looks pretty damn nice.
